you start with C first.
Same shit I faced when I was learning to program.
You have to start with C.
With C you will learn recursion, include guards, memory management, call by value and reference, file I/O, sockets, generic programming (void *), functors (function pointers) and the rest of the good stuff.
then and only then you move to C++ in order to learn OOP, inheritance, overloading, overriding and the rest of the features.
If I were you, I would learn C, then move to Java a bit as a middle step, and then go full C++.

3. Do algorithm and data structure problems once you start getting more confident or want to move away from the tutorials.
4. Start free-form coding, contributing to an open source project or get a job to try to solve an arbitrary problem.
5. Submit your shit for code review, take feedback or figure out ways you can make your code run faster with less memory leakage.
6. Start working on more advanced problems or extending your code to do new stuff.
7 to infinity. Repeat 4-6 until you get promoted to management or get bored of coding and want to do something else.

After several attempts to learn programming over the years, I finally took a c++ class at the community college. I lucked out with a great instructor, and the book is also really well written and put together. D.S. Malik.

The problem with starting out with tutorials and things like codeacademy is that there are so many fundamental concepts to programming that are really hard to get without some sort of pedagogy. I'd recommend a good textbook. If you are truly a brainlet, take a course or two. Maybe do some research and make sure you get a good teach.

the best way to learn it is to have a problem that you solve with it. or be like me and be hired for another purpose and then get dragged into maintaining 20 year old C++ programs
