I worked in a shop during college, and the tills used to tun an ancient DOS POS software and it was lightning fast at everything it did, and pretty much every function had a global shortcut, meaning you could always go to wherever you wanted to go in a single button press once you were experienced. Before I left they spent God-knows how much replacing it with "modern" software and touch screens, and holy shit, it was so slow (both functionally and interactively) compared to the old software.

This is something that's always talked about in computer circles. In the early days of computing you needed expert programmers to get the necessary performance out of the processor. Now that processors are so fast the most important factor for writing software is how quickly you can get it out. Moore's Law is dead anyway so the bloat is only going to get worse from here on out.

Since you didn't write the utility and they're all for unix systems why even bother using it? just write a program that will work on any system that loops through the file looking for EOL and whenever it finds a newline it increments count unless said line is empty AND near EOF.
