Is there anything more soulless than software engineering? Think about it because chances are you're going to work for a no-name mobile development company. All those years wasted at school to work on boring things such as Sword art online academy and Naruto Shippuden battlegrounds for mobile. There is plenty of software that basically do the same thing so if you don't work on one of those companies then you'll work on something else equally mundane and pointless. Wow what a way to live.
Who actually is a software engineer on Jow Forums? Tell me about yourself. What did you study and do you want to kill yourself every day?
Can't wait until you get bullied at work little undergrad. Trust me, most SWE jobs are not worth the stress.

I graduated 3 years ago and hit 100k net worth within a year. Have fun living on ramen while hoping for your grant application to get approved.

Hurp durp, what is work ethic. Who the fuck cares what your making when you're getting paid.
Colton Ortiz
I'm a data scientist and I laugh at the SWE plebs who brag about their allowance. President makes 400k and being CEO is like a million but it's not worth the stress trust me. You aren't in any position to argue because you've never achieved anything besides doing a whiteboard problem lmao
And you're a SWE making at least 100k? Doubtful unless you graduated from Harvard with honors. Protip: you ain't getting into these companies within 5 years on average
I graduated from a school better than Harvard and make well over 100k. Those numbers are just base salary.

CRUD maker here wish I could work with something with which I all had to care for was computers themselves instead I spend 90% of time trying to understand business rules which I have absolutely no aptitude for I spend my waking days wishing I could do something else I cry myself to sleep at least once a week I hate my fucking life

it depends, is code your life or your job? do you have other hobbies/skills/talents aside from coding and software design? do you have side projects for fun?
There is a lot of variables, I see a lot of writers in Reddit (inb4 goback) use Emacs and know some Elisp. Does that make them programmers? Software Engineering is here to stay, it will be as relevant as Electrical Engineering or Mechanical but you are not forced to do it if you don't like it.
Tyler Sullivan
a copywriter can get that level of income in a year and increase it faster. Your point?
If something beautiful like goroutines or lisp homoiconicity doesn't click with you it means that you probably don't see the beauty, but programming is sort of a fetish a niche even.
Brody Sullivan
you can also start your own startup

>basing your whole career on something as bullshit as copywrite

medford oregon is a medium to small rural town. 42k a year there is pretty good.

>Is there anything more soulless than software engineering? Retail.
Joseph Ortiz

i used to live near there, medford sucks.
Nathan Evans
software engineer working for a ~50 peeps company making SaaS solutions for a niche professional branch
After a year I earn 45k€ a year in a rural area in France (not a lot by american standard but don't forget all the socialism bucks and I don't have any degree to pay back since education in France is basically
free
). I can tell you a lot of my friends who did more challenging studies (imo) like law, economics or whatever are jealous about my current situation. I code in JavaScript (WebGL / React) and Java and there isn't a single day where I go to work unhappy or stressed. I don't know why life is so much bullshit in burgerland.

>Is there anything more soulless than software engineering? Anything in law, business, economics, management, accounting or anything that deals with money. How they don't want to kill themselves is beyond me.
