sold something online and got paid from a scammed account and since some scammer had bought dozens of things from that account the local cops somehow decided to steal all my electronics because that somehow made sense to them. Doesn't really take much for them to take your computer and phone and everything else even though it's obvious for anyone with half a brain that you've committed no crime.
Anyway, I looked into what they do with the things they take and it's apparently mostly automated tools which flags things that a human may or may not look at.
It's also apparently quite common that they do absolutely nothing with your computer or phone, the local cops take a lot of things for no reason, taking phones and laptops and computers on the off-chance there's evidence on it is somewhat routine. The forensics people who actually look at these things are overworked and have to prioritize which means they ignore things that were taken for no good reason. Thus, they could just sit on your hardware for a year or two and then you get it back.
Just some general advice: Use encryption whenever you can. You don't have to actually do anything wrong for them to take your things.

They pick through it with a fine toothed comb. You need to remember, they have quotas and filled quotas means they get more money. If they can't find specifically what they are looking for (in the warrant) then they will find other stuff and if they personally can't nail you for something they find they will send it to whoever can nail you for it (another jurisdiction) and hope those people will scratch their back next time.
They mostly use automated stuff, but will go through by hand if motivated.
