Are VR headsets a meme? I was considering getting one of these.

>I was considering getting one of these.
don't

Why?

If you've never tried the "modern" VR headsets that started with Oculus yet, then it's actually going to be very, very cool for you. It's probably better than you're expecting to be quite honest.

However, like a lot of "cool" new pieces of tech, the novelty wore off for a lot of people that have been following this new VR wave for the past few years, because it's taking quite a while to actually get useful content out for it to justify getting one beyond tech demos and the initial wow factor.

I would recommend doing one of two things:

1.) Wait for the Oculus Quest to release at the end of the month. It's a fully standalone VR headset, full range motion tracking, comes with the controllers, no need to mess with cables or phones, and about as powerful as a Switch. $399, amazing entry point into this.

2.) If you have a strong PC, get the new Rift S also coming out I believe around the same time if you want to really push it to the limit.

Don't listen to It's very cool, and something I think every person should try out, especially now that it's had a few years of competition and tweaks since the dev kits. Even back THEN I was fucking blown away and felt like a kid again when learning what a video game was for the first time.

Just check this out, look through the specs and information on it, and decide for yourself. The people calling it a meme either A.) Haven't tried it yet and are just shitposting because they either can't afford it, or just flat out are ignorant to why it's more than just a flat screen in front of your face.

B.) People that did try it, years ago, got bored of it, and regret their purchase.

I'm assuming most people are in B, just because the wow factor has worn off for those that were following the development of this industry for years. If you're new though, you're going to have a fucking blast for a few months at the very least just trying shit out.

Also porn. VR porn.

>get the new Rift S
If you want a proper headset, wait for the Valve Index instead. Its knuckles controllers are the greatest innovation to come to modern VR in recent memory and have the potential to completely revolutionize how interaction experiences work. Check out some of the boneworks gameplay footage to see what I mean.

The Quest isn't a bad idea given the price, but know in advance that it will never be as capable as a PC linked headset.

Tbh the novelty never wore off for me. Had an Oculus for over a year and I'm still impressed when I use it.
You have to find a game you like though, or else it'll collect dust.
Anyway, if you're in the market, you should really wait a month until the Valve Index unveil.

VR is indeed a meme gimmick fad that is already over.

I've played around with my friend's 1st gen vive, it's decent enough that I'd buy a PC VR headset when they come down in price.

As for the phone, it's just wonky.

Honestly VR is so good, it got me excited about technological progress again.
I thought things were stagnating and, we'd never have flying cars, people end up using phone apps as their main computer... but then VR comes around and it makes everything else look outdated.
VR is expensive and still in development, but if you get a GOOD VR headset, it's really cool.
Don't get some shitty one though, nothing too cheap or where you put your phone inside. Those are bad compromises and not worth it.

While on this topic, what is the best vr player for android?

we unironically had better VR in the 90s than now

>old good
>new bad

wirtual workplace is more compact than realone

VR developer here for the past 4 years.

Seconding this. Get the oculus quest when it comes out.

How much money do you get from social services?

If you want it for 3d movies, porn or simulation games, absolutely.

Wait for the steam VR headset that is coming out next month.

I'm personally on the fence between the Acer OJO 500 (AH501) and the Rift S.

checks out

VR is a meme

I like to use VR while sitting in front of an unused 3D monitor un-ironically.

Attached: avatar 3D.jpg (800x449, 236K)

Now post the picture of a guy with a monitor taped to his face swinging wii remotes around, that'll show him

It's one of those things that you need a reason for buying before actually buying. Otherwise it'll be a cool toy for a month and then gather dust on your shelf. Same as RPI - great piece of hardware but retards that bought it for no reason complain that it's useless meme tech and a waste of money.

VR is great for simulators (iracing, dirt3, dcs, ets, vtol, etc.), also fun for shooter games (doom, serious sam, pavlov, etc.) other genres benefit from it compared to desktop the same way movies benefit from color television compared to b/w - same thing but generally a better experience and can be leveraged to show extra facets.

for some things that is true though say literature
you would probably benefit more from classics than from something that is on the ny times bestseller list

I'd buy VR if I can lie down my bed and shitpost with it through my brain

You can get close, virtual desktop and voice typing.

>tfw my cuckulus Go still has the best lenses (of what's affordable and available) but the games are android shit tier

>voice typing
I don't want to ruin my vocal chords. But if sensors can get precise, maybe something like an air keyboard that tracks your fingers IRL

No

>We had affordable at home vr with 6dof head and hand tracking in the 90s
Sure bud

its a meme

You're a meme

the tech itself isnt a meme but there isnt anything to use them for currently apart from porn and tech demos. it will remain a meme until it actually gets some software

It's just not that immersive. It's just 2 screens very close to your eyes.

It's a bit more than that but, yeah, we need a decent option for an omnidirectional treadmill for it to be truly immersive

they are cool if you work in creative field and want to impress you clients with this kind of presentation
our headset paid for itself in 3 months
for private use I don't see any point

There are plenty of decent online multiplayer games at this point (Pavlov, VRchat, Echo VR, to name a few). If you don't like it, whatever, but it's a bit misleading to say there is nothing to do. I've owned a rift for about a year and a half and I've spent hundreds of hours in games

It's a Japanese comic you're supposed to read from right to left.

It has head and hand tracking. Also, there are lenses between the displays and your eyes, so the stuff you are looking at appears to be further away. A bit dishonest to say it's just screens really close to your eyes

The naysayers are people who haven't tried it because they can't afford it, and they're scared it will replace flat gaming, thus forcing them to get a job.
Meanwhile Valve's headset is going to be unveiled in a matter of weeks.

So is basically someone uncucking himself by using oculus? Kek

I'm personally once I build a new computer going over to linux, I don't think it has much in the way of good VR support yet though, maybe keep that in mind if that is you? Anyone want to share knowledge in this area it was something I was personally curious about.

I have over 3500 hours in VR. VR is not a meme, but you should probably approach it with the right angle. The most exciting thing about VR in my opinion is creating things for VR. Game development, and also making content in your favorite metaverse community. It's a brilliant tool for expression even if you've never made anything before. It's very social too and if you are missing that in your life, VR is a game changer.

Get the right headset and invest correctly.

Do not get the Vive unless you can get a full barely used setup for ~350.
Do not get the Oculus Rift except for for barely used ~250.
Do not get the Rift S.

The Valve Index is the dedicated PC, quality option. You want those base stations, you want the nice HMD, and you want those controllers. You want the compatibility with Vive trackers. Only Valve and Vive can do good full body tracking at the moment and Vive headsets are not a good deal at their current retail price.

I can't say I can recommend the Oculus Quest yet unless you know you fucking love beat saber, other rhythm games, and you're super hyped about VRChat coming to the quest. You'll ironically probably only enjoy the Quest the most from having already invested in dedicated PC VR.

I can't say I can recommend mixed reality headsets right now unless you are in some difficult country or something. I think they were a good idea maybe a year ago.

I wouldn't buy anything other than Oculus or HTC's Vive simply for software support. Oculus has been around longer, but the Vive team seems to has been innovating faster in recent years, with Oculus working to catch up.

Until a universal runtime API exists for VR (similar to Vulkan or DirectX), I wouldn't touch a chink headset with a 10ft pole.

SteamVR/OpenVR is kind of like that, the game targets SteamVR without targeting a specific headset. Kind of how a game can target Vulkan or something without targeting a particular graphics card. OpenXR is coming though.

Not true at all. VFX1 was ahead of its time, but pretty much all HMDs sufferred from high latency and low refresh rates leading to motion sickness. And thats ignoring the tiny resolution

I don't use mine nearly as much as I should but I still don't regret it. $900 for the OG Vive and deluxe headstrap when it came out. Still don't regret it. Usual time is an hour, half an hour if I'm doing something quick. It's like owning an atari in the 80s, nowhere near the capability of what it will be in the coming decades but it's here now. Sairento and Chroma Lab are my go-to games.

Why tho?

totally worth it just to play anime porn games

VR porn is some next level shit.

>shilling for Zuckerberg
This guy gives good advice, BUT DO NOT BUY OCULUS. EVER. Buy Valve's headset if it's good.

There's some meme startup that's developing a gesture based typing solution soon.™ You wear a flexible band thing on your knuckles, like you would wear brass knuckes, and tap your fingers, which the device interprets into keys. You can tap anything and where you tap doesn't matter, it just goes off of which fingers move, so you could type lying down in your bed. Soon user, soon.
