Just "window manager" is enough. A desktop environment is itself not "non-tiling", but it includes a window manager which may or may not be non-tiling.

There is none. Like with OSes and browsers, all suck and succeed in their own way.
Although most (!) Jow Forumsentoomen prefer one of those three: KDE, GNOME, Xfce
