Do you call it "piracy" or "file sharing"?

Justify your choice.

I've wanted to be a pirate ever since I was a kid so piracy

"Piracy" sounds cooler.

Freedom of speech

cheese pizza

It's only file sharing if I share it.

File sharing because the copyright law we have does not accurately reflect the reality of the situation we find ourselves in as a society and is now in the process of strangulating our once free market to death under its icy grip.

No, it's file sharing someone shares it with you.

Copyright infringement

how much they paying you pajeet the last pajeet said he got 12 cents a hour

The word "piracy" romanticizes the act of crime.
I call it "stealing" because that's what it is.

But I'm not sharing it, I'm just taking it.

it's being shared to you from the other person

The idea is that copyright infringement is stealing is a fairly knew one. Do you believe in moral progress, user?

I call it, Downloading.

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)
If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

the crux of the argument isn't what's important here. You can debate all day and yet 1) people will still share/pirate files and 2) trying to crack down on it via copyrights, litigation and constricting freedom isn't productive (or morally productive) either.

The argument really should be how continue moving forward under the assumption files will still be shared so long as the internet remain as open as it currently is.

But I'm not sharing it.
Like, if people are sharing their work stories and I'm just sitting there listening, I wouldn't call what I'm doing "sharing my work stories" because I'm not.

ok but its not "me sharing files" its file sharing implying its files being shared from one person to another

Thanks, rms!

You have taken a file from another user through the process of sharing.

In which a Jow Forumsentleman's autism develops into solipsism.

Now this is accurate.

My legitimate reason is: I’m a digital thief and nothing I’m doing is morally justifiable so fuck you, fuck every s(n)eeder, and fuck you again for good measure.

piracy because it sounds cooler. I justify it based on the fact that any game I pirate is already a game I don't intend on purchasing, and more often than not if I like it I buy it for full features. I can't think of a game I pirated in recent memory that I either didn't delete 20min in or buy except maybe Far Cry 5, and that's because fuck ubisoft.

Child pr0n

I call it torrenting
I also call flash drives usbs sometimes

What do you call users downloading files from and uploader who has loaded a file onto a central data repository (e.g., mediafire)

It's all "file sharing" if you're participating in the transfer of files from another party to yourself or vice versa. "Piracy" pertains to the legitimacy of ownership of said file(s).

Ever since I went almost full-freetard piracy has gone pretty much out the window for me. I piss away $10/month (or however much it is) to Google for "Play Music" and ad-free YouTube and I really don't miss pirating music anymore. I've found more artists I might never have heard of just by using the "start radio" feature. Then again I've probably found even more via SoulSeek/Nicotine+ back when it was less heard-of.

Anyway, if I can get an equivalent for "free" that's the route I take these days. And if i can pay outright for a product or service to an amount I feel is acceptable I take that route over "piracy."

I call it piracy and I'm fine with being pirate

Booty snatching is what I use

I call it what it is - stealing

That's just downloading
But I rarely do that

Well they're trying to crack down on this last part.

File sharing, I don't see how it's any different to giving away a CD or DVD that you own

I call FUCKING STEALING. Sounds badass.

Hypocrites are worse than thieves.

File sharing is file sharing.
Piracy is sharing of copyrighted material without licencing.

>stealing for thieves is wrong!
Yeah, enjoy your literally cucked life.

I just use the descriptive term “illegal downloads” or “illegal filesharing” since that’s what it is where I live. Piracy is an asinine term because it likens this benign activity to armed robbery.

Stealing implies depriving the legitimate owner of the stolen item. But if I copy a file it is still there for the owner to enjoy. If *someone* steals my bike, I can’t ride it. If someone copies my video game, I can still play it.

A far better analogy is using a hidden camera in, say, a movie theater to watch a movie without buying a ticket but of course that doesn’t have the same moral impact as the stealing analogy has so copyright advocates obviously are gonna go with the less sensible option.

Just post the song.

Fine.

There.

Piracy would imply deleting the original.

piracy obviously
makes it sound way more exciting and cool

Is that from Flip Flappers?

File sharing since that's what I'm doing. If I did it on a boat on the high seas with a parrot on a shoulder and sword and musket strapped to each hip, I might say piracy.

If you did it on a boat on the high seas with a parrot on a shoulder and sword and musket strapped to each hip, that would be a whole fucking lot cooler. Someone should make a VR file sharing application where you have to actually pirate your content to download it.

Piracy is a crime that results in criminals getting jailed. While this is fine, it's not fine that companies take a term and attach it to something completely unrelated like making a copy and sharing it with your friend in order to make being a good citizen illegal so they can profit further. People should be honored for sharing with their friends, not jailed.
"Piracy", used unrelated to violence at sea, is a word that brainwashes peoples minds and unlike calling yourself a Punk when people call your subculture Punk, calling yourself a Pirate plays into the hands of those companies; this terminology is used to change the law.

There are only two solutions for this:
1) reject that term entirely: you're not a criminal, but a good person
2) make the public connect piracy with being a good person

I vote for 1, since it's not my business to brainwash people or give terms new meanings; that's what the business of the enemy.

i call it communism

RMS advocates for Free Software, not Open Source. How new are you.

>sharing ideas
except movies aren't ideas but properties

I tend to call it Yarrrrring or Plundering.

When you pirate something and it turns out that you really really like it, do you ever go back and buy it or support the creators of it in some way? Say you really like a song that somebody made, don't you want that guy to be rewarded for his work? I used to pirate a lot when I was young and poor, but as an adult I support the things that I like.

Even if I'd own a ship, i would not pirate something, but if a friend makes a copy of his music so i can listen to it, i would say "thanks buddy", and for sure, I'd lend him mine when he asks.

t. NPC

how so?

The fuck? It's from no game no life.

Why would you buy something that's free?

I prefer Digital Niggery

you're part of the problem is that content creator stops producing more of the content you like.

Retard

>making a copy and sharing it with your friend
I don't think the license to play a game included anything about making copies for your friends who don't own the license.

I call it Holocaust v2

Intellectual '''''properties''''' specifically, you forgot to mention. They are intangible and possess (or rather: don’t) certain economic characteristics that sharply distinct them from physical property.

due to me working publicly with software, doing anything against any UELA is not an option to me
I prefer freedom, which is both FOSS and Creative Commons, instead
>using inferior, outdated, perhaps unsave even software
>not taking the freepill
unless someone is forced to use a UELA program, then I can respect it

so i'm npc cuz i don't pay for stuff? tough shit. i'm gonna use any opportunity to save money.

still property

This is why proprietary software should vanish entirely. It puts you into a dilemma where everything you do is wrong: if a friend asks you for a copy, either you violate the licence or you're a bad citizen and a shitty friend. Bee a good person and do the right thing.

Nowadays, sure, but that is a fairly new concept on a historical scale. It’s also quite retarded on a purely legal and philosophical level.

...

(((Content creators))) are a part of the problem you retard. (((Copyright))) laws are a cancer. I'll only donate to open source shit.

Piracy gets all the bitches.
File sharing is for commies wanking to 'file shared' blacked porn.

I call it stealing from the Hollywood Jew and it feels amazing.

Piracy is literally the worst name for this, but it sounds cool so the people who do it stick to it. It's cool, so piracy.

A man of cultrure

People make various digital content with intent of SELLING it. Sure it basicly costs nothing to copy data but thats not the problem here. Its like driving to a mechanic, having him repair your car (without the use of new parts) and then running without paying. Its not like you took something from him, so you wont call it stealing right? Well call it whatever you want, dude provided you with a service and you refused to pay for it. If thats too hard to grasp then i suggest you go back to primary school.

The argument did not concern its legality or ethicality, dummy, but whether or not stealing is the appropriate term. It is not.

What I described earlier (hiding a camera in a movie theater to watch movies for free) is not stealing but still scummy. Calm down.

the "service" charge in that analogy, is exhausted by the first sale.
thereafter, the purchaser of that service may share the pertinent information he gleaned on how to perform that with repair with other people as he chooses.

I am calm user. Just because something can be copied for zero cost does not mean you can take it without paying for it if owner expects to get paid for it. You took something and refused to pay and thats stealing. If it makes you sleep better keep making excuses for yourself.
