Why the fuck does my download speed vary so much ? I got 5 mb/s yesterday but now I am at 50 kb/s. This only happens on steam

Why web sites that host software are usually say something like "Please wait for 5 seconds while we are preparing your download..." what exactly they are preparing? Do they measure speed to give me closest mirror?

Attached: 1555066834213.jpg (1000x1000, 95K)

they display ads in that time.

As in previous thread, i’ve Been having the same issues. Interesting that you mention steam. That’s where I've noticed it the most.
Are you on wi-fi or Ethernet?

What's the "logical increments" trusted site for refrigerators/fridges?

They’re installing the botnet on your pc

jokes on them, i never seen a single ad and still download all i need AHAHAHAH

wifi

afterburner is suddenly unable to detect my driver version. i cannot change my fan curves, voltage etc..
tried reinstalling GPU drivers using DDU, tried installing older versions as well. i also tried installing different versions of afterburner. nothing working. anyone got any more advice? google isn't helping.

What's the best file format (plain text preferable, but not necessary) for representing a simple list/array?
CSV comes to mind, but it feels ridiculous to have a CSV that's only one column.

Specifically, I want keep a list of my favorite movies, books, etc., which I'm currently doing in one big, messy TXT file.

maybe yaml

Dumb crossposter.

try disabling the firewall in your router temporarily, some just cant cope with steam maxing out the connection (in most cases) and starts dropping things

I got an old Line 6 audio interface. Trying to figure out what cables I need to get. What kind of USB port is this?

Is it USB B? i.e. aliexpress.com/item/1M-Professional-Black-USB-print-line-2-0-Wire-A-to-B-high-speed-Square-Mouth/32948569597.html

Check windows/android isn't fucking around with updates. That happens too many times for me.

50 kilobit/s is faster than 5 millibit/s. But what are you downloading? It could be a server issue.

The OP belongs in /cm/, though.

It only seems to be a problem with steam

your ISP might be throttling steam servers at certain hours of the day.

What's the best option for customising/organising Chrome downloads?
i.e. put all PDFs into a PDF folder etc.

JSON?

If there can be cute anime girls and bear computers, there can be cute anime boys

Been downloading from Google Drive lately and I've noticed my downloads have been awfully slow these several months. Sub 300 kb/s slow. Has Google Drive had any problems lately or is it being actively throttled on my Firefox browser?

I tested it if my internet itself was acting up by doing a parallel download with MEGA and other websites where I download stuff from, but that went with relatively normal speeds. Also tried turning off FF's proxy settings, to no avail. So what gives?

Attached: Untitled.png (128x46, 1K)

ISPs rank priority on some lines.

Usually goes VOIP -> Games -> Streaming -> Webpages -> Downloads

Gaming falls under gaming, browsing the steam client falls under webpages and downloads falls under downloads. Maybe you're on a throttle line.

I think one of my secondary harddrives is dying. I've noticed that when I go to save or upload an image from it that there's more of a delay than I'm used to seeing for it to fully load that directory. I've been noticing little hiccups in its performance like that, but it still seems to be "functional."

I already pulled off all data worth saving off of that drive, is there anything I can/should do? Now sure if I'm overreacting. It's been a very long time since I've had a harddrive fail and in the past a harddrive would just die without warning.

check the drives SMART status, check it's fragmentation level

I'm thinking of finally switching to Win10 from Win7. Is this a good idea, /sgt/? Y/N?

At this point I don't see a reason to stay on W7 personally. Only reason to stay would be privacy stuff, which I'm sure Microsoft rapes in W7 anyway.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post, but I'm looking to split tunnel a wireguard connection on linux so that a few sites I visit use my regular net aka they aren't forwarded through the VPN.

On windows I accomplished this by pinging a URL to get its IP address, then adding that IP with "route add mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.50.1"

I've been searching this for a while and all the answers I've found look a lot more complicated than I'd expect it to be. Is there a one-liner like above for linux?

need a cli program to cut flac files. don't say ffmpeg because it's bugged

>recently
>someone thinks of upgrading to W10
>ask him if he reserved a free copy back then
>he replies with no (sometimes following the sentence with "why I would I do that?")
Every time.

IIRC Microsoft added telemetry features to W7 the same day W10 was released.

I like Audacity, though I think it'll re-encode always.

what's the best program for checking smart status? (on Windows 7)

I don't mind re encoding since it's always lossless. I'll try older ffmpeg builds to see if I'm affected by a new bug or something like that

I still got that free copy.

Not the same day, but they eventually did. 7 and 8.1 can both avoid telem if you use security updates only, but there's no way to do that automatically.

crystaldiskinfo

Thank you for your replies, Jow Forumsentlemen. I'll switch to my free copy of Win10 later.

well golly, according to that all of my harddrives are GOOD. I wonder if it's Firefox that is making my computer seem sluggish, because I have noticed that it's pretty much perpetually using 50% of my ram as of late. I'm not capped out on my ram usage, but it is high.

So I have two monitors plugged into the same Windows 10 PC.

Is there a way I can simplify switching between what my main monitor is? Like, instead of right click > display settings, is there a way to bind switching the main monitor to a keyboard shortcut?

Also, is there a way to make it so certain programs or games will always use a specific monitor, rather than the main monitor?

recently I noticed that ls started showing me cyrillic text as a bunch of numbers and tmux shows them as a bunch of underscores if I decide to type them
what do

Attached: Screenshot_20190421_211309.png (640x69, 12K)

>Also, is there a way to make it so certain programs or games will always use a specific monitor, rather than the main monitor?
Don't know about the other question, but no for this. It depends on the program to be able to do this. You can use Borderless Gaming to set a game to run borderless windowed on a specific monitor though.

What do I use for my default gateway and DNS on a server? Right now the server is connected to a router acting like a switch, and that's connected to the ISP box. When I use 192.168.1.14 (switch ip) it hangs and does nothing.

How i can install mpv in fedora?

I'm doing a basic bitch programming project to convert pictures into ASCII. Somebody tell me so I can be sure I'm not out of my fucking mind: can you see the colors in this picture?

Attached: Untitled.png (1920x1040, 203K)

There is a little bit of colour banding at the top.

bump

Cleartype

Attached: 1526098719189.gif (640x200, 4K)

I want to learn Haskel. What would be a good usecase for haskel that could really use it's strengths(for a beginner that knows over 10 procedural languages but none functional).

I'm most learning to later learn Nix.

why tho?

Yep, turning that off definitely got rid of it. Why does ClearType entirely change the color of characters like that?

Firefox wouldn't affect PC speed, especially if there's any free ram. If you're not using an SSD as your OS drive, windows 10 kind of automatically sucks.

>ISP box
>router acting like a switch
There are several functions that can be broken down between those two. If your router is just acting as an access point, then your "ISP box" is the router and probably the DNS host.

when I try to type/read text when programming or just browsing the internet on my win10 desktop with an asus monitor from like 2015 and a gtx1050ti gpu, my head starts to hurt, and I just realized it is possibly related to pixel density.

Question: Is there a way to get my display to change dpi to be that of my laptop , also when will this stop being a thing? Like phone dpi is very good it seems because of the size of screen but are people still ok with staring at text with such a low pixel density? am i retarded?

check device manager, see if caching has been turned off for some reason on the suspect drive
also check the disk controller (also device manager) to see if it is reporting the correct transfer mode (dma is better over pio)

Cant you just increase the scaling in windows 10 to make it bigger ?

My laptop (T420s) constantly disconnects from the wi-fi when steaming video (Youtube, sport streams, porn, etc.) and it goes away by simply diagnosing the connection. It seems to be the only thing that does this, as my phone, tv's, and game console keep their connection to the wi-fi almost 100% of the time, unless the wi-fi actually goes down.

What makes this weird for me, and the reason I don't just think it's solely on the laptop, is that when I take it to my brothers house and connect to his wi-fi it never drops connection.

The fuck am I looking at here?

I was thinking of hosting a web site and realized I don't really know anything about that and basically I just want to know if it's expensive and a hassle? basically I'd just upload some text and images on it, no tracking shit or transactions etc.

any tips how to get started with this sort of thing? I can do basic html, enough that I can fairly easily make the site look the way I want

also what sort of legal shit do I have to be aware of? every site has a legal section and shit I don't care about

My hosting is only 50 cent a month or something.

do you host from home or use some server somewhere?

Shared hosting, it saves me more on electricity and the hassle of maintaining it.

test some stuff out with 000webhost first (they do site builders, file upload etc), so you know how it's going to look in a browser
i use them sometimes because they allow direct linking

More likely you have a monitor that hasnt been adjusted so it is using the default brightness/gamma/contrast settings, which are great for selling in a store but not for long term home use

How do I learn all the stuff surrounding making a 'real' program in C? I can program in C but things I'm not clear on include; libraries static and dynamic, importing source vs linking to object files or archives etc. linking in general, stuff like if I compile on my machine against my copy of glibc and give the program to my friend on a diff distro with a diff glibc how to handle that stuff? Packaging it for a distro? No C tutorials or books really cover this stuff. Any good resources?

Cool

now my main concern is just if I have to have some list of legal notices or some shit that I am not aware of, I am not selling anything

What exactly is a BOM? When I create a new C# project with dotnet, it adds a BOM character. What's it for? It doesn't seem to matter if I remove it.

My phone won't turn the screen back on after starting a call, it's annoying as fucking hell.
Googling around, is this common? It seems to pop up here and there randomly. Is there any real fix besides changing phones/OSes?

1) just how much can i do with userscripts?
2) what do i need to learn to write one to press some buttons automatically?
3) what do i need to learn to write my own browser extensions?

Attached: AAAAAAAAAAAA.jpg (540x411, 73K)

well, there's this wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Creating_packages

You could also take a look at some compiled AUR packages to see how they handle things, like gzdoom or something.

Does your phone have a proximity sensor? May it be damaged?

most things your browser can do, just programatically
not a whole lot
look at the source code for existing ones to get an idea

the top of my screen is pretty broken, so probably.

I don't actually know but I would assume if the phone can't get data from the sensor it probably just keeps the screen off while in call.

What are some good cleaning and anti-virus tools? I've been using some fitgirl repacks and I just want to make sure nothing's hiding in my PC

Attached: 1527537989347.jpg (1200x783, 165K)

there's an fdroid app called satstat, it reports sensor data
mine was reporting either 100 or like 3, but now that i've messed with it now it's just showing a dash and the problem's still there.
time to disable it i guess

Cleaning is bleachbit (not ccleaner). AV is malwarebytes + defender.

You really can't be sure you've cleaned out your PC if you've run untrusted software. AVs aren't that good.

Anyone know how to extract pornhub playlists using youtube-dl? Keep getting a 404

boot from a live linux disc and run clamav

I need Outlook and Office for university, Outlook didn't work in Firefox under Mint so I installed Windows 10.
I'd like to use Mint tho. Will Outlook work in Chrome in Mint and will Office work through PlayOnLinux?

yep, got to pick off the broken piece of glass over that sensor and it works now
looks a lot worse now but hey it works

just werks for me
have to update, probably

What are your favorite wikis, databases, resources, etc.?

Websites like TV Tropes, Internet Archive, Wikipedia, IMDb, Google Maps (especially Street View), Flickr, SCP Foundation, etc.

I don't think a day has passed in the last 15 or so years that I haven't skimmed at least one article on Wikipedia.

I sometimes sit for hours reading magazines and newspapers on Internet Archive.

What are some good rabbit holes? I love information.

Oh yeah, the AV with the lowest detection rates out there. That'll do it for sure.

How true is the meme that people who work with computer networks have no free time left? I'm learning networks now and it seems fascinating so I would like to work with them, maybe get something like a CCNA cert.

the soundbite my prof gave me in the like one class i took was: if they're good and they set stuff up right, they'll be the comfiest person you know
if not, they'll be putting out fires all day

What is the best way to cleanse all data from Facebook that I can? Is it as arduous as going through the activity feed and deleting every action manually?

it's impossible. anything you do will just be on the frontend.
best you can do is hide it from everyone else, and that's just an account deletion.

My main goal is to just hide it from other people. A full account deletion puts it beyond the restoration of anyone except Facebook employees? My old posts won't just hang around all over the place?

looks like other people's tags of you will still be there, but it just won't be a link any more. if it's your own post, it's gone.

So, I should manually untag myself before I delete.

referring to the text of your name, i mean. if you can do that, sure.
