I see in many places people, and not only beginners but even intermediate and advanced users saying they prefer Mint over Ubuntu. Isn't Mint simply cinnamon with Ubuntu LTS? Or is there some wizardry on it do not know of?
I see in many places people...
basically. also has a bit more packages and drivers i believe. mint is 10/10 in user experience. i have yet to find a person who actually dislikes mint
The devil is in the detail
That's it. I install mint. Update. Turn on the firewall and I'm ready to go about drivers and shit.
I only use it because of cinnamon
Mint is that one distro which absolutely nobody hates on, despite the fact it's just Ubuntu Cinnamon and the devs are actually not faggots and are pretty decent. You might get that occasional "muh bloat" from people who think that any OS that uses >1mb RAM is bloat, but in reality it's fine. It's just a distro with good devs and it actually works. I started with Mint and I loved it, I still use Cinnamon up to this day and just can't help but use it on *every distro I install*. Wonderful project to be honest.
>Isn't Mint simply cinnamon with Ubuntu LTS?
They have their own tools on top of it in addition to Cinnamon, such as Mint Update.
But really the reason you use Mint is Cinnamon, it's by far the best DE if you're coming from Windows.
>i have yet to find a person who actually dislikes mint
I've been using it as my main OS for a while now, to be honest I am tempted to switch to Manjaro with Cinnamon, I'm just worried about long term stability.
Cinnamon is the better desktop environment and it just werks™ even more than Ubuntu
well to be fair their devs rely on ubuntu and then debian's devs. i'm using kubuntu rn since i need more up to date packages but mint is completely fine and comy uewwoo
I used Mint for a while, but at some point they had outdated gcc packages, then I tried to manually install it, then mak didn't work.
Ubuntu always worked best for me.
manjaro is not recommended. like, i normally am not the one to bitch about certain distros but manjaro is the only distro that has failed to install for me and has broken simple programs. their devs are KNOWN for breaking shit and not caring about security. if you do then i hope you have a better experience than i did
I used to be a mint user a decade ago. I'd use Kubuntu over Mint these days.
I mean it might as well be Antergos, I simply want to use Cinnamon on a rolling release distro.
looks like a mint shill thread with samefags
ehh rolling release isnt all its hyped up to be. in reality most programs that users care about e.g. web browsers have MAJOR updates maybe about once or twice a year. ask yourself if you actually need the latest gcc or init. i recommend antergos but you can't use the arch forums since they're so mentally challenged they force you to use an arch-specific terminal command related to the date to even signup. you can always use their IRC though :)
>i have yet to find a person who actually dislikes mint
Many dislike it for the same reasons they dislike Ubuntu.
they dislike ubuntu because retards tell them ubuntu is a "noob" distro as if skill is involved in using a fucking operating system.
they dislike it because it works, it provides the user all the software they need, the drivers they need and stability they need.
When I was a kid I also preferred Mint to Ubuntu. I actually don't know why. I know way too much now to rationally explain it. I'd put them on roughly equal footing now, or even argue Mint is worse for being further removed from the roots, a derivative of a derivative.
Trying to hide useful tools behind half-assed GUIs does no beginner a favor. It may feel more like Windows, but it isn't, and when something finally doesn't work (and don't you dare tell me that you never had to troubleshoot anything) they are stuck with copy-pasting commands from the Ubuntu forums.
A beginner friendly distro should work, but at the same time it should help to ease the user into slightly more advanced stuff like command line usage.
No it should not do that. 99% of people don't want to learn about their system. They just want things to work and no I've never needed to troubleshoot Ubuntu or mint. It literally just works.
If people like me want to learn about linux there are other distros to do that but for normies Ubuntu is fine as it is
Thats the reason why one of the bioinformatics in my lab use it, because he hates gnome
>worse for being further removed from the roots, a derivative of a derivative.
what does that matter when you're actually using it? I think Mint is superior to Ubuntu because Cinnamon is the best desktop environment and Mint works even more flawlessly out of the box
You are correct. Linux Mint brings nothing to the table except Cinnamon. Originally, Linux Mint included proprietary codecs that Ubuntu was unwilling to ship with by default. Today, that is a non-issue and Clem just keeps Linux Mint going as a cash grab.
>i have yet to find a person who actually dislikes mint
You have not looked very hard. I've been here all along
just use windows 7 bro
>It literally just works.
Except when it doesn't. For example failing or throttled Wi-Fi connections are common, just like with any other Linux distro.
Of course this is a fundamental problem, which seriously hampers the ability to use your computer. Smaller issues are more likely to occur. A flickering screen, obscure outdated packages, sound problems, random crashes of non-essential programs, stuff like that. They might not bother you, if they happens once, but they will once they become persistent.
Never having any problem with your OS is unrealistic. It doesn't matter which OS you run or what distro. Every OS has bugs and given enough time you'll encounter one. Being able to troubleshoot your own machine is critical, especially with a community that is filled to the brim with retards, who give answers without properly understanding the problem. And what is the point of using Linux, an operating system (fuck off, Stallman) that gives you the freedom to properly troubleshoot it, if you refuse to learn how?
99% of people don't want to learn about their system, you say? Fair enough. But you know what? Those people use Windows.
I chose it over Ubuntu simply because it doesn't have the nigger inspired name.
