Popular doesn't mean better.

bandwagon fallacy

because 99.9% of humans are worms

If money is so great why are 99% poor?

I think you meant GNU/Linux.

what is gnu

too busy running internet

Because it's "only" great at running most of the world's personal computers including smartphones, servers (including much of the critical infrastructure - from stock markets to air traffic control, but also just the Internet), smart and possibly even also embedded devices.

What you're asking is akin to "if Windows is so great at running video games, why isn't it running on Sony/Nintendo consoles?"

You only bring in smartphones when it suites for a market share argument
Android isn't the Linux that people think of when running Linux on a desktop, it's not GNU/Linux and most people who run GNU/Linux on desktop don't count Android as anything pertaining to them there is just too much difference between the two

If Van Gogh was so great why did he die an unknown loser?

lol linuxtards trying so hard to warp meaning of words to suit their delusional faggotry

It runs on mine which is the only thing important to me.

That has nothing to do with Desktop Computers and even so you straight up lie. Stock infrastructure, air traffic control, etc still runs on decade old systems many still run on Windows 3.X and sooner. Linux really only runs servers.

gnu.org/

Why is market share on a free OS important in the first place? I use windows when it's useful and Linux when it's useful. I don't care what other people are doing.

Without people using it there isn't a huge incentive to improve or bring hardware/software manufacturers more on board with actual support

Because majority of people are mouth breathing retards.

Because Windows 7 hasn't been discontinued yet.

>If dieting is so great, why is everyone fat?

>the 2% of the population is responsible for the 80% of the internet

About 2% of people are intelligent and have taste.

Attached: 1551690741305.png (442x341, 146K)

The only thing Linux has over windows is bash. And you can get bash on Windows...

lmao that looks like the linus tech tips guy

>inteligent
>taste
What?

The same reason functional programming isn't popular.
The brainlets get weeded out instantly, and people who want ease of use will opt for something "functional style" instead.

What qualifies as unknown? Pajeet OS?

>functional programming
Sorry i like to do real work

because people will eat shit if you put a price tag on it. the higher the price, the sweeter they will feel that shit taste

Linux is a kernel.

probably places where they couldnt determine the os, so like really custom made stuff idk

Why does your fucking kernel have 2% market share, as opposed to the windows kernel and that gaybsd kernel of apple? Huh, mr know it all?

>The only thing Linux has over windows is bash. And you can get bash on Windows...
You clearly have not truly experienced the power of Linux. True, it is bash for the most part but when you dig deep into what bash can do? (You can literally control the ENTIRE OS over command line). You can't do that with Windows. Bash = absolute minimum resources. Windows = GUI bloat, everything needs to run on its own GUI, click click click. Linux? Enter command, press enter, done. Not to mention a superior selection of file systems and technologies. Looking at this from desktop and server perspective...

Popularity of technology is more often corelated with marketing than quality.

lmao

Linux is great.
GNU is the cancerous shitstain.

go use a musl distro then

Because you and normies prefer the convenience of what you got. Ever wonder why torrenting has diminished so much here in usa? Netflix, Hulu, SlingTV, Spotify, and YouTube gives them convenience of access even at a price.

Normies will normal.

If money is so great, why do 98% people only have 10% of it.

Because:
1. It's actually shit
2. If you have any problem, it's always your fault for not finding a hacky workaround, not the system's for requiring one in the first place
3. It's infested with freetardation, which normal people don't give a shit about

But Linux has the most market share of any kernel across all computers.

Most people buy prebuilt computers and they come with a preinstalled Operating system, mainly Windows. Why? Because there isn't a big company behind LInux distributing it to prebuilt Computers. Are you retarded or don't you understand Statistics?

>kernel desktop

Attached: 1550978432922.jpg (842x792, 81K)

Not much, you?

Regular people have no use for it. Believe it or not, most people aren't interested in going into the command line and learning syntax for basic tasks.
MacOS and Windows are just better end user experiences for the vast majority of tasks that the vast majority of people perform. It's about time the evangelists learned this and stopped screeching

Lel. Personal computers include desktop computers. Yet most of them are running the brilliant Linux kernel.

because baby duck syndrome is real

bloat

>Stock infrastructure, air traffic control, etc still runs on decade old systems many still run on Windows 3.X
Lel, wat? For stock exchanges, you can easily look it up - NYSE, London, Qatar, Tokyo, and many more run on Linux.

Various air traffic control systems also are known to run Linux - >10500 machines deployed in towers by DFS, EUROCONTROL MUAC, CTAS and ETMS in the USA, and many more run on Linux.

I don't know any instances that run on Win 3.1 now - what kind of a suicidally crazy idea is that? Most of them came from some Unix to Linux.

because tons of windows users also use linux

>MacOS and Windows are just better end user experiences for the vast majority of tasks that the vast majority of people perform. It's about time the evangelists learned this and stopped screeching
This.
Phone distros, like Android, and Meego+Sailfish+etc. proved it can be an enjoyable OS, if you stop making it a crapfest involving repos for every version, CLI commands for anything even remotely outside of browsing facebook and the app store, and other weirdness.

But as it's easier to blame the user for not understanding the genius of it all, and having to learn the inner workings of his OS just because.

tbf i rarely use the command line and only game and rarely use cli. either way the cli is a much nicer and smooth experience than using messy GUIs that windows. macOS is pretty based though, shame its on such fucking useless laptops

>3. It's infested with freetardation, which normal people don't give a shit about
Maybe they ought to start giving a shit about it.

As much as it pains people to admit, Windows just works.

Better compatibility with superior programs, don't have to mess around with the terminal to make sure everything is set up, better hardware drivers. Simple as that.

Not a desktop OS.

Ah, yes, the same old autist that goes "acksualy, you don't have to use the command line. Everything can be done through the GUI nowadays!".

No, mate, if you want anything besides having a fb machine(to which some other faggot will go "well, most people don't need more than a browser and editing a document"), you need to open that terminal.

and what does windows get used for that is more than a facebook machine console?

Maybe you shouldn't expect people to be cringy stallmanites in order to use your OS.
FOSS got popular in various areas when it was convenient, and met people where they were.

Thanks for proving my point.

>Windows bad GNU/Linux good

/thread
I mean, why does it matter if the desktop market hasn't been completely taken over? All others have been:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems
Yeah, it's all a lie. See above.

You can run windows entirely from command line too though... And there's also a lot better software options. Especially in my field

elite post

> You can run windows entirely from command line too though
Uh-huh, and that command line runs in a window, thus requiring a graphics stack. Many Linux admins are unaware of this, believing MS has done something decent and catches up with Linux. Nope, it's still the same Windows, but all other windows except Powershell are prohibited to run.

Attached: 1556056595347.png (691x351, 4K)

You can boot windows in cli mode

You kidding me?
Besides, yes, I know it's possible to customize a wim so it'll boot to something like scandisk mode: pure console, no logon, etc. But this isn't official by any means.

Attached: 1556057926150.png (777x461, 5K)

Honestly, humans are lazy and stupid as fuck

A big reason is that Windows gets shipped with prebuilt computers. People don't want to bother to install a whole OS from scratch (most "normal" people don't even know how to create a bootable USB or even boot off of one) and just want something that werks
Not everybody wants to read documentation or watch countless videos to learn about Linux (or g'noooo PLUS Leenooox) just to know the difference between Debian and Arch
Also, the Linux community consists of like 50% toxic people, 30% people that actually know what they are doing and are helpful and stuff and the rest is just r/unixporn retards that don't actually know what to do with their newest artwork.
Of course, that's just my opinion

Like linux users

If winshit wangblows has 95% market share, why is it such utter fucking garbage?

how'd you know what desktop share it has when it doesn't have telemetry :^)

Baby Duck Syndrome.

In Europe (or maybe just my shithole) it's not permitted to sell a PC without an operating system for some reason. So you can actually see some stores selling PCs with Ubuntu (or sometimes things like freedos). How many people do you think keep the Linux instead of pirating Windows?

>europoors have the government tell them what needs to be installed on the computer they buy
why is your continent like north korea?

These typically only show publically facing systems like web servers. For every public host offering web content, there are at least 3 Windows servers running Active Directory, Exchange, and SQL Server.

Also, a fuck ton of stuff is containerized anyway.

I sincerely think you must have autism to find GUI a negative aspect of an operating system. What little "bloat" it is is utterly negligible on modern hardware and the speed/useability is obvious

GNU is NOT UNIX

>If Linux is so great, why does it have 2% desktop market share?

Patrician taste will always, by definition, by in the minority.

Doens't matter. GNU/Linux can't into a fucking desktop without stutter, screen tearing, have a shit display server, make a shit protocol like Wayland and don't solve the problem with Xorg.

So, in this case, popular is better.
