How do I hop on the Linux? Since the support for Windows 7 ends next year and I refuse to install w10, I want to get on Linux, but I have no idea how. Which distributions are tech-illiterates friendly and would allow me to improve my computer knowledge? And what things I should do first after installing it?
>inb4 install gentoo

ubuntu

install funtoo

Just by a Mac
Or try it first in virtual machine
Linux is absolutely garbage on desktop, their different desktop environments just mimic windows or mac

Nah, I'm not gay

people are gonna say go arch even for begginers... no.... retard luke smith said so too, hes just a nerd. either mint, ubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu, kde neon, for starters.

gnome gets a lot of hate here, to be honest i think its just these losers samefaging. although gnome does have some problems and basically no software uses gnome except gparted so basically its more efficient to us a qt or kde based os or xfce like KDE neon, Lubuntu, of Xubuntu.
ubuntu and mint use gnome which has some problems. for example installing kdenlive the most popular linux video editor, you'll basically have to install half of kde to use it on gnome but kde neon and lubuntu already have the assets.

if u want something that looks nice i reccomend kde neon

lightweight, lubuntu or xubuntu.

i personally use lubuntu after like 3 hops. im pretty happy here although if lightweight isnt needed its much better to go kde neon or if u wanna learn more use ubuntu or mint and face the problems and learn from them like me and many do.

u can always hop distros later even if it takes half a day.

first step is to just install it as main os or dual boot at the beggining.

pick an anime wallpaper and get at least one folder of cringe music to display.

kde plasma is also ok OP. similar to kde neon but more bloat,,, kinda more like windows 7 desu

FreeBSD. Start with the lainzine

Try to go with one of the big names. Some of the small specialized distros may have their use, but most of them are just inferior forks. Also test all distros that might interest you in a VM beforehand.
To throw a few names out
>Debian / CentOS for stable (some might say outdated) packages
>Ubuntu (and its flavors) / Mint for a more beginner friendly / retard-proof Debian experience
>Fedora for up-to-date packages
>OpenSUSE Tumbleweed / Manjaro for a rolling release distro
Again, just look into the most popular distros, test them in a VM and decide for yourself what to use. Don't let Jow Forums (including me) tell you what to use. Every distro has its strengths and weaknesses. There's no perfect one. You can only find the best one for your needs.

>And what things I should do first after installing it?
The first thing you should do is to learn how to use your package manager via the command line. There are many GUI frontends for various package managers, but nothing beats direct usage and its one of the most important tools of every Linux distro.

Instal Kubuntu you negroid.
Ubuntu has problems caused by GNOME.

Mint or Manjaro.
Mint if you just want to acclimate yourself with the Linux basics, Manjaro if you want a gateway to more complex distros.

You should start with Gentoo.

>Install Solus OS
>Get all your software from their highly comprehensive repos
>Bliss
Don't use Ubuntu or any of that shit, it's not as polished or user friendly as Solus

Linux Mint

But user I'm gay and fucking hate Macs

Being an Apple user makes you gay, but being gay does not mean you use Apple, it just makes it a lot more likely.
Anyway you need a noose around your neck.

I'm straight and I genuinely like macs.

Install gentoo and dwm.

Install openbsd :3

Attached: download.jpg (251x201, 12K)

1.download any linux distro ISO
2.download rufus
3.connect the usb
4.use rufus
5.take usb out
6.shut down pc
7.activate pc with usb inside
8.install...

if 7 dosent work check in the bios the boot legacy and make sure its boot from the usb before any other device..

and kys for not knowing that

Install Plan 9.

Who fucking cares about support. It's not like you didn't turned off updates, right?

Install Fedora or Solus.

just don't. if your fine with windows 7, you will be fine with windows 10.
>faster
>better with ssd
>optional linux subsystem
>they give it to you for free if you punch in an valid key from any post-xp-windows version
going to linux will gain you nothing if you're not going to use it as a professional.

install proprietary drivers and get it to boot afterward (not too hard, if it doesn't work, edit your grub settings to boot from nouveau, best if you take a photo of your boot settings beforehand).

you might learn about sandboxing if you use firejail (or at least claim you have sandboxed chrome)

Pop!_OS is basically pre tweaked Ubuntu. Buy a System76 laptop and it's preinstalled. Buy a Thinkpad or build a PC and it should Just Work.

i would argue that most distros are exactly the same desu, you just pick one and make it work for you. but thats my opinion.
also op, go with linux mint cinnamon, its the most intuitive experience for a windows user, or kubuntu. kde neon is a bit weirder

>ego breaks constantly
>Dropping gxabi and 32bit support

Just install Gentoo

gentoo truly is the chad linux but op said inb4 install gentoo. i had to come up with something else.

At least you didn't say

Install exherbo

Install in a VM first. Ubuntu is a great first distro - Mint is up there too, but I don't trust their devs (incompetence rather than malice).

Try an Ubuntu spin if you don't like GNOME. Budgie and KDE versions exist and are literally the same OS with different defaults.

Not a samefag here - I fucking hate GNOME because it's a touch UI with all the compromises that entails for systems that will never be used in a touch-friendly form factor.

The motherfucking lock screen does "slide to unlock", and it only gets dumber from there.

this is good advice. do this OP

Can I install Ubuntu and just change the DE instead of installing a 'flavor' like Xubuntu?

You can do everything from GNOME with a keyboard. All these shitters waste time ricing out their desktop but can't read the documentation for GNOME.

You can, but it's more effort and time wasted. The "flavors" are the same OS with different defaults, nothing more. They use the same packages.

Putting this another way - Ubuntu is a flavor of Debian - they are not directly compatible.

Ubuntu spins are directly compatible with each other as they're the exact same OS with different GUIs preinstalled.

I'm tech illiterate by Jow Forums standards and installed Kubuntu recently. It seems like a good one to learn the basics of linux with before trying something more intensive.

If I wanted a pure keyboard WM, I'd go install i3. GNOME constantly reminds me with its visual design that its a fisher-price toy, making it directly accessible by keyboard doesn't prevent me from getting disgusted with its look.

Adding onto this - if you're new to Linux, getting a GUI that you don't hate is an important first step. You need something "familiar" to fall back on when you start exploring. If you can't use or hate the UI, you're likely to quit in disgust when something gets challenging.

People like to act like they're 1337 because you use i3 or whatever minimalist shit, but they can't write some code to retrofit GNOME they way want. Who's putting on the facade here?

(You)'re the one who suggested that dislike of GNOME means you can't into config files.

Go back to bed, Lennart.

Implying the ricers who spend more time in config files than anything else can actually write code.

avoid linux mint, manjaro or other nigger blog patrocined distros

again the gnome hater? this thread is not even about desktops environments.
OP should take ubuntu as is.
By the way GNOME is not only keyboard driven, is easy to use in ANY way, that's why it's default. And has nice accesibility options. It's literally meant for anyone both advanced and noobies.

Go for any Ubuntu flavor except GNOME

Distro doesn't matter OP. Just remember that white man uses terminal while nigger uses graphic interface

But you use Windows?

Anime is cancer but cringe music is OK

see

I was referring to his gratuitous use of the word 'nigger'. We get it boy, it's very funny, but you just can't help imagine an unkempt 28-year old manchild sitting passively behind his porn-and-anime telescreen, who has never and will never ascend beyond consumercuck status his whole life.

buy a cheap $80 laptop, install Linux on it and play around

>t. pic related

I’ve never used kde neon before, but use that.

boy ubuntu is also a even more patrocined distro

Why would any sane person install any Linux OS?

>any Linux OS
Never heard of those. Are they new?

Oh wait... do you mean GNU systems?

Manjaro + Budgie. It may take a second to get your network drivers working, but it'll make good practice.
