There was hotmail for a lot of European users, most Americans had yahoo and there were a few other options. What google had was a good reputation and the offer of a large email box because back then everyone used their email accounts to send funny videos and pictures and this meant that you’d need a lot of storage and while a yahoo account offered at first 10MB and then later 20MB when gmail first appeared it went to 50 then a 100MB and it stayed there for a long time while gmail had close to 1GB and kept increasing to 2.8GB and then eventually they called it unlimited. But eventually email died and gmail was already the norm thing for most people specially with the android platform out there.
