Laptop recommendations

What laptop would Jow Forums recommend for a prospective Computer Science student?
It should last a few years and I am willing to spend $1000 to $1500.

200€ thinkpad.

>basedpad

I'm a CS student and I use a 10€ laptop, you can do anything there if you use minimal GNU/Linux distros...

>prospective
i recommend any decent rope, as after you become a student most ropes will break under your weight

I'd look at an XPS or one of the newer Thinkpads, maybe the T480.

get a thinkpad
>I am willing to spend $1000 to $1500
is that money actually yours or did dad give you a set budget? if it's yours you'd understand the value of a refub'd thinkpad while saving the rest of your money. if youre a kid and daddy's buying you a laptop, get a macbook or something

Thinkpad, XPS, Razer. HP are making some good ones too these days. There is also chinkshit that’s pretty good if you want a windows MacBook.

2nd hand thinkpas
Got my T460 2 years ago for 500 europoors and it's still working perfectly fine for all EE purposes (programming, modelling, simulations etc)
Don't know what the prices are like where you are and what the best model to get currently

Also, HP Zbooks are great but more expensive

This. You can get a refurbished HP Elitebook 2nd gen i5 or better for under $150. SSDs are under $40 easy to upgrade if you desire that route.

I inherited 15 million euro, I go to university for fun not because I have to. Sorry, not everyone is a pathetic poorfag loser like you.

>I inherited 15 million so I'm just gonna sit on it and go to school for fun instead of learning how to turn that 15 million into 50 million
the only loser here is you faggot

You clearly never had access to this kind of money or you would know that 15 million is enough for a few lifetimes. Only a poorfag would think youi'd need more.

>15 million is enough for a few lifetimes
maybe if you earn it. look at all those 100m lotto winners who went bankrupt

If you’re paying yourself 200k a year that only lasts 75 years (I didn’t incorporate bank interest though)

Where are you from user?

Asking for curiosity

thinkpad T61

Here is what I am working on: A HP 6550b. i5 1st Gen 460M (2.53 GHz) system. Upgrading them to 8 gb memory, SSD and put in new batteries. Waiting on memory in pic arriving today to test in 1 unit before updating the other 2.

I have 3 of these. May not play a part in CS anymore but the serial port is very useful with older Cisco router/switch systems. Have docks for them as well too, so quite nice all around if they all upgrade fine.

Get a MacBook
You can stop feeling the pain of college when your fingers are actually painful

With 1million euro you could live easily only with the interests.

We're talking about €urope non the states. If you go go Portugal, Spain, Italy you don't have to pay an assurance or whatever healthcare Is free and Life costs way less.

You're unlucky user, I'm Sorry. That Money Will corrupt you and maybe you'll never do anything in your Life but living as a parasite.

>€urope
enjoy spending extra on muslim taxes and tv licenses

riced out 15' mac obviously if you're a millionaire

a used thinkpad on ebay if you arn't. Can get a pretty nice used thinkpad tho.. t460 is looking pretty fast for $400. Could even get 32gb ram for that price.

>Taxes...
>TV licences...

You're never been in southern €urope right?

I think these days i'd recommend getting/bringing a decent desktop to leave in your dorm and run an inexpensive laptop or tablet (say, up to $500) as your portable to slog around class.

Even an iPad might be OK if your latency isn't too bad and you can remote into your desktop in the dorm, plus it'd be far better for note taking if you prefer using a stylus. Just sync files using the cloud of your choice from OneDrive/Dropbox/iCloud/personal server.

Battery life is key as well. Dont be one of those retards looking for outlet.

I know it's against the holy mantras of Jow Forums but i do unironically advocate for an iPad as a lightweight companion device with a long battery life and will fit into any bag - I suppose i'm in the minority, but i always found the 9cell hump hugely annoying

Big neg on iPad due to cost and apps restrictions. Android for just ES File Explorer and programs like it alone. If you absolutely want a lightweight not android then you want a tablet/laptop combo like in pic.

Attached: Asus t100ha_c4_gr.png (1581x717, 382K)

But the point is that its a companion device. A cheapo android tablet really can't compare when it comes to battery and build quality.

lol no, my dad wouldn't ever pay for that
However, I live in a country where you don't have to sell your kidneys to be able to afford education, so this will probably be my biggest single expense during my studies.

I've had to deal with both in the work place and personally. The Android tablet is far more flexible in its use than the iPad. iPad had one major advantage in the work place and that was allowing us to lock it down on users and centrally manage them. My work offered me my own brand new $1200 iPad. I declined and they gave it someone else. I just had no use for it as my $40 amazon fire tablet with the play store did so much more already.
Dont get me wrong the iPad is a perfectly reasonable device to have for some people. It is a very simple device for those you have to explain about the closing of apps fully or rebooting the device to fix issues. It just is not really those who visit Jow Forums.

get a cheap $200 thinkpad, and invest the rest in a decent desktop + good keyboard + nice monitor. working on a laptop sucks, it's not ergonomic, your neck will hurt, the screen is small. it should only be for school - when you get home, use your desktop

it's not really an issue anymore, just carry a powerbank

Acrer Helios with a full sized 1060 GTx card. Don’t do homework just GAME.

thinkpad A485 will probably get huge discounts soon

Ugh. Carry more heavy shit instead of just getting it right the first time. Think about it, just a little bit.

Why would you choose the inferior amd version? There are literally no benifits.

The android tablet may be more flexible, but for this case that's not necessary. It may be cool to be able to run gentoo a tablet but it is completely unnecessary if you're requirements are for a good battery, digital pen and ssh box.

sure, carrying less is definitely an advantage. not something i'd pay $600 for, though

Any other good windows tablet? I dont mind used or new, around $300

T4x0s are shit if you want to do graphics or gaming. They're good for programming but that's it.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 1St Gen.

You can pick them up for ~$300 used on ebay.

I bought one for $250 last year
and it's the best laptop and the best keyboard I've ever owned.

As a CS student, you'll just ssh into university boxes for any heavy computing. Also you don't really want massive specs-- would only encourage gaming.

This is what I did user

>Buy used MacBook Pro
>Already had SSD and RAM upgraded by apple: $700
>only 500gb SSD space, no room for porn
>Nothing runs on it aside from fucking Chrome
>no games
>Install Logic Pro X: $200
>It crashes if the laptop has been on for more than 30 minutes
>even iTunes has a microtransaction/subscription shoehorned in nowadays
>install windows with bootcamp
>Windows 10 does not werk
>laptop's Mouse won't work on Win7
>try to install gnu/linux
>can not
>Realize I have no desire to be a white rapper and just want a usable computer

>Buy used ThinkPad, with SSD and 16gb ram downloaded: $230
>Spend a few more shekels to mod it
>$30 HDD bay in place of CD tray for extra porn
>$50 IPS display to replace original panel with dogshit viewing angles
>some Thermal compound to replace stock heat jizz
>Can actually open the laptop without it overheating and melting the chocolate in my pocket
>gnu/linux install was a breeze
>apparently they're hackintoshable too but fuck that disease
>Can plug smart cards, SD cards, Kenny lock, and still has a VGA plug with mini-displayport and no need to haul around a bunch of faggy adapters
Total investment: ~$310

If you're spending 4 figures on a laptop, not including the option to do gayming would be wasting money.

it's cheap

You are still fucking stupid faggot cuck

He shouldn't spend more than $500 because that's about all he would need for school.
Anything more and you're just paying for the ability to distract yourself
There's a social aspect to gaming that I totally get, but I just don't think it's worth it in the long run. Personal viewpoint

>Anything more and you're just paying for the ability to distract yourself
And that's a bad thing? As much as I loathe degenerate gamers, how is gaming in moderation any different than watching shows or movies, getting drunk and/or smoking weed? Technically it's all a waste of time all the same.

Either a Thinkpad X1 or Macbook Pro

Where does one get a 15 foot Macbook?

chinkpad x200/x220 or t400/420

Only Frankenpad. ~ 40$ on ebay
You can install OpenBSD.

Attached: frankenpad.jpg (259x194, 7K)

where does Jow Forums buy there chinkpads?
t. Europefag

>And that's a bad thing? As much as I loathe degenerate gamers, how is gaming in moderation any different than watching shows or movies, getting drunk and/or smoking weed? Technically it's all a waste of time all the same.

If you have free time in college you should be using it to network with other students. Having connections you can exploit will be ten times more effective than knowing some obscure bit in a coding language. Social skills breed success far more than technical prowess.

Had access to 40 of these older thinkpads to keep if I wanted for a job. Worth it for selling technically but just decided to dban and drill the drives then toss to recyclers. Still happy with my choice.

I've got news for you: you can play games... With other people!

Epson HX-20 around 450 USD

Not OP but a good quality laptop under 13" something like x220/x230 brand new or used not a problem.

XPS 15

J bought this cuz I'm broke. Is it any good?

The new X1 Extreme was just announced so the outgoing model is probably going to be heavily discounted until launch. I'd pick one of those, even the base FHD model is incredibly good.

do not spend more than $400

Get a new thinkpad t490, they just recently released about a month ago, are made very well, and can be had for in that price range.

>In the internet, no one can know I'm lying.

thinkpad t420b

Not OP here. I want a basedpad but there's SO many of them. I hear buying used is my best bet, but it seems like there's hundreds of models to choose from.

3320M is not that bad

do they sell models with okayish discrete gpus, like 1050ti?

whats a cheap lightweight thinkpad with a good keyboard and trackpad? only gonna use it for programming. decent speakers would be a bonus though.

> determine required specs
> set budget
> ???
> why the fuck are you on a tech board?

>thinkpad
>bought for speakers
Choose one. You are paying for branding and good speakers dont happen with that brand. Like a reverse apple whore spending the same $ on over priced shit.

I recommend a big fat cock in your ass.

>what is reading comprehension
i did say it would be a bonus meaning its not necessary.

S E E T H I N G

>what is brand whoring
I did say you are going for something without even looking into the products before hand. You just want the product because of the name.

>not even looking into the product beforehand
actually asking about laptops in a laptop recommendation thread before buying.
what was your point again?

You want a thinkpad, you have no idea what they are about. You just wanted the brand name.
>whats a cheap lightweight thinkpad with a good keyboard and trackpad? only gonna use it for programming. decent speakers would be a bonus though.
You wanted a brand name. You dont know why they are desired. You are a consumer whore.

ive read enough to know theyre performance/price ratio is higher than most other brands and have really good battery life (also external batteries so you can have backups on the go) plus they come with a lot of ports compared to other brands. theres also wealth of community knowledge so if i ever have questions theres most likely people with the answers. which is enough for me to want to buy one.
so why are you so butt hurt that im interested one enough to ask more about it?

Are thinkpads good for ps2 emulation?
Posted from my Xbox One

Aaaahhh!!! Don't feed the troll! *slaps hands away*

>used thinkpad off your preferred e-commerce site.
>upgrade to ssd/more ram if need-be
>install gentoo

you're set.

yeah already identified as a worthless being to try to talk any sense into or trolling as fuck. Just needed to call them out.

Sadly you are a the consumer whore troll. Keep buying that brand name. Ignore all the other brands. Lenovo, lenovo lenovo. It is rather sad.
