Apple's 30% cut of App Store revenue could be ruled illegal

Apple's 30% cut of App Store revenue could be ruled illegal

>The Supreme Court, ruling 5-4, allows iPhone users to pursue their antitrust lawsuit against Apple in a case involving its signature electronic marketplace, the App Store.
>Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the majority opinion, which was joined by the court’s liberal justices.
>The iPhone users argued that Apple’s 30% commission on sales through the App Store was passed along to consumers, an unfair use of monopoly power.

doesn't steam charges 30% too?

>passed on to users
i don't think it's passed on to users on steam. steam charges $60 for new games where all other stores do too generally speaking. There was a case of one game being sold for less on epic store because they take less of a cut

And Google Play, but you have the option of installing non steam apps on your PC and non Play apks from Fdroid or other sources in android. With Apple they enforce a monopoly

All online stores are at risk of antitrust law suits.
Anti-Monopoly laws might begin to be enforced.
That's all the big online retailers.
This will mean a change in business practices and a change in restructuring online retail.

It shouldn't just be the 30% shit.
They should also be forced to either, or both:
- Allow third party apps in the App Store to use the kinds of undocumented APIs and background execution and job scheduling APIs that apple apps can
- Allow third party app stores / allow people to distribute .ipas without immediately getting their $100 certificate revoked.

always based

But this is a good thing for iToddlers.

nice reading skills you have there brainlet.

Triple Satan Truth

BASED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BASED and fucking REDPILLED

You'd think so, but they get emotional breakdowns when they get to pay apple less. An attack on Apple where they are forced to fuck them over less and improve competition in the app store is like anuddah wave(TM).

You can opt to shop from Amazon, GoG or any other site on your PC. You ONLY have the option of installing shit via the App Store on an iPhone. Sure you might be able to Jailbreak if you're tech savvy but the rest of the population has to deal with the Apple monopoly over their device and the developers have to eat shit on bad commissions as well.

Based drunk willing to tell the rest of the corporate scotus cocksuckers to fuck off

Apple will allow netflix, spotify and other services with direct competence by pass 30% for subscriptions fees.

Steam isn't the only place you're allowed to buy from on x86
The reason that it's potentially illegal is because Apple locks out competition, while this isn't an issue on other architectures.

Imagine how Tim Apple feels

based and misspilled

They are already in a lawsuit with Spotify over refusing to give up their 30% tax

Attached: AppleSecurity.jpg (1080x673, 186K)

Steam isn't the only place you can buy PC games, Play Store isn't the only way you can load APKs, etc.

Good, most of us don't care since we all hate Crapple and iToddlers.

>company A builds warehouse
>companies B C and E agree to pay a fee to house product, and sell it to customer
>companies B C and E can sell their product to other markets as well, use other warehouses as they see fit with no penalty
>company A has a secure set of tools it developed for itself, allows other companies to use said tools if they license it, otherwise they can use their own
>company A agrees to drop the price by 50% after a year to all companies
>company E, after years of benefiting decides they dont want to pay the fee, lobbies government to force company A to take the fees away
>"hurr everyone support spotify theyre the good guys"

WTF i love kavanaugh now?

>be itoodler
>have to go all the way to SCOTUS to even have a chance of not being cucked by tim apple
>literally every other device on the market doesn't have this problem
>implying itoddlers aren't eternally btfo

I mean, this is good news, but it's only step 1 of like 30 to ending the walled garden. This was just a ruling based on one narrow defense Apple raised (out of about 14 defense). It took a few years to get here, and now it goes back down to the lower courts for the other defenses to play out. It will be a few more years (and possible more supreme court trips) before this is resolved.

The problem isn't the price, the problem is that iPhone only supports (offically away), installing apps from Apple's store. By Apple's own design the only way to get app's on iPhone is to go through the Apple controlled store. Apple has given themselves a monopoly on the ability to distribute apps. Steam isn't a monopoly because on any Windows/Mac/Linux computer you can install whatever software you want on it, likewise you can install whatever software you want on an Android phone, including different app stores so Google Play is not a monopoly there.

based

based

we always loved him you worthless soi cuck

steam is different because they don't control an OS where they make you purchase everything through steam, and people can try to compete with them like the ebyn games store

>but it's only step 1
yeah, but that's how the shit unravelled for microsoft. with one small victory, and then, years later, they were toppled.

As much as I hate Apple, I can't even right now. Why is the government telling Apple their 30% share has to go?

>monopoly power
what? Apple is a shit company with a lot of market share but it is in no way a monopoly.

>we

Couldn't this be applied to Sony (PSN) and Nintendo (eShop)? If Apple loses, will electronics manufacturers be forced to open up their platforms to running unsigned code, like all the companies mentioned that already do?

Yes, plus Xbox and Windows S or whatever it's called now.

It's gard to see that happening. Maybe sales cuts will be negotiable somehow.

They control the ONE source of applications on the platform. When you own the marketplace and the product antitrust runs after you.

>Why is the government telling Apple their 30% share has to go?
that's not what happened. all the supreme court did was say to say that apple could be sued by their customers. apple was trying to say that they never sell any apps to consumers, that the consumers buy the apps from the developers, but the supreme court said "no, everyone knows that you're the ones that the buyers are paying."
apple had hoped that they could get the case thrown out, but the supreme court basically said, no, the buyers can sue you, apple.
the supreme court made no decision about whether apple is a monopoly or not, or whether they can charge 30%. they just said that it's a valid lawsuit and that it can move forward.

>Insulin price gouging is just fine
>Allowing the sale of addictive carcinogens is adult choice
>Affordable education is socialism
>Apple’s app store cut is too high
I guess we know who’s been sucking hind tit on RNC donations

You can install games from other places on computer. iToddlers cannot install apps from elsewhere without jailbreaking their phone.

>now

Attached: kavabro.jpg (700x700, 59K)

I fucking hope so.
>this is the best day of my life

Fucking amazing. Kavanaugh has proven to be the populist we needed. And to think anyone on the left tried to oppose this guy from being confirmed.

Apple owns iPhone.
only allowed app store is Apple's.

Sony owns Playstation
only allowed app store is Sony's.

Nintendo owns Switch
only allowed app store is Nintendo's

...

They make the platform then force app store monopoly. Platform creator should not have a monopoly on how it is used.

android has anti-trust issues google is hampering competition and favoring itself.

One is an entertainment platform, one is directly tied into your daily life and mandatory for business.

>download fdroid on any android
>press install
>it installs
>monopoly
off yourself retard

guys, this is not a deep-throating competition.

Attached: linus_finger.jpg (520x317, 52K)

I didnt say android had no app store options. Im saying google is making android design choices so it kills or hampers competition in favor of it's own self interest.

Apple should pay tripple penalties back to the users, so 90% fine.

>Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the majority opinion, which was joined by the court’s liberal justices.
Isn't that the guy who lied under oath? How does one become a justice after that?

Ameritards, I swear.

if you don’t like the walled garden system then buy a device with more freedom like android. Isn’t that how capitalism is supposed to work, vote with your wallet?
Having the governments over regulate just leads to the governments having more control and citizens having less freedoms.
The only time I see the government stepping is as good is when their is no choice e.g. America’s ISP monopolies.

Attached: gabriel1.png (1920x1080, 1.16M)

>Isn't that the guy who lied under oath?
lol what? Are you fucking retarded?

Lets say we have 50 manufacturers.
They all offer bad service and own the land, knowledge and factories. Now will they ever truly think of the consumer and environment? No. They will compete against each other but will never make something that would cannibalise or ruin their ecosystem/power.

what is boofing?

You literally get steam keys on those sites

This site has always been right wing leaning. Deal with it, cuckboy.

that's not relevant, there's a base licensing fee for steam to host on its infrastructure that the publisher has to pay, and then the keys can be sold elsewhere with no steam percentage cuts involved (though the key sellers are going to be taking cuts)

Oh ok, you're retarded.
>hurr I know the exact meaning of a slang word 30 some years ago

For all practical purposes steam is a monopoly. Just in terms of having to use it. Aside from entirely DRM free games youre either forced to use steam or a publishers launcher

I hope epic grows and becomes an actual competitor. I hate being stuck with steam for everything

OH PLEASE!
This would be so fucking good.

It is, because publishers have other options besides selling on Steam, even if they do sell on Steam they can sell keys outside of Steam (of which Valve doesn't take a cut), and consumers can buy games on Steam, off Steam but for Steam, and not on Steam at all. It's a completely different scenario from Apple.

>steam is a monopoly
Monopolies are perfectly legal for this exact reason.

the consumer has the choice between 50 manufacturers of the product. If the consumer doesn’t like the product/service provided by any of them they choose another until they are happy. The rejected ones have to improve something to gain back customers or they die.
With that much competition it would be detrimental to piss off your customers.
Also capitalism is supposed to allow the set up new competing companies to fill gaps in products/services.
If we talking patents that’s a whole new system of regulation.

Attached: Gabriel2.png (1920x1080, 1.07M)

i want to fug lazy gabu

>You literally get steam keys on those sites
>gog
Are you retarded?

>For all practical purposes steam is a monopoly
No it isn't, you fucking idiot.
>hope epic grows
Kys. Epic should die in a fire.

Gog is a rare exception I read it thinking green man gaming

Also the fact that youre this defensive over steam and its fucking massive place in the market tells me youre a god damn muh gaben meme dickrider from r*ddit. Please go back there you corporate dick sucking cuckold.

>MOMMY HE INSULT STEAM MOMMY WAHH

based fucking retard

Attached: 1557614607878.png (645x729, 50K)

>hurr durr why are you defensive about steam
They managed to singlehandedly make Linux gaming a thing and greatly improve WINE while Epic is trying to destroy that in any way they can.
Epic is a fucking cancer worse than steam. I'd rather have the better option succeed instead of getting a much worse and anti-competitive, Chinese owned company getting any relevant dominance in the market.
>r*ddit. Please go back
It's okay, you fit in.

>0 arguments
Kill yourself, autist.

So your beloved corporation valve can do no wrong and competition bad because muh Linux.

Corporate dicksuckers like you deserve the fucking rope.

Attached: kk.jpg (729x859, 41K)

Steam is literally the original first permanent botnet phones-home-every-minute DRM cancer that spawned all other DRM cancers.
Kill yourself.

Did you faggots forget about securom or whatever Sony's DRM was? They literally required you to be always online or your game would close.

Attached: corporation.png (969x576, 105K)

>the original DRM

No, drms existed long before steam, such as Starforce and worse

Did you cocksuckers forget about how Securom and Sony's DRM became a thing because they saw how valvedrones bent over and took it up the ass?

They are steam precursors.

>implying implications
Anti-piracy measures have been a thing since personal computers are a thing. The PSX had anti-piracy measures in place, but they were hilariously ineffective. One of the reasons Nintendo went with cartridges for the N64 was precisely because it was harder to copy a cartridge than a CD.

Price gouged insulin.
Much cheaper coca cola than water.
All options have planned obsolescence or are have monopoly element baked in.
Printers have ink and repair monopoly. Give me one printer manufacturer who makes long lasting repairable printers and has allowed competitors to make ink, parts and repair. Has competition on this submarkets. This is the future of all consumer electronics.

Competitors get bought because they are not ripping off consumers and making money to compete against abusers. Comes a point when alternatives no longer pop up because all knowledge is centered. Oligopolies wont be broken down. All product options are bad and no choice but to buy bad. Oligopolies wont offer the better product option. How is this not a failure?

Market wont change their product if it makes more money not to. Untapped market is not filled. Ex. see above text about a printer.

Gatekeepers exist that favors those who can pay. No viable product can be made if the product doesnt make enough to pay for the gatekeeper or gatekeeper sees that it would harm those who pay the gatekeeper.

"You have a choice!"
You imply consumers have power when they dont. No awarness of abuse. No awarness of possible alternatives that could be made.
If someone defends with "But they can riot." They are delusional. Money buys power to keep peasants in check. Peasants betray each other for money. Arms will be provided by the powerful.

...

gabu to cute
I do agree that companies will fuck over consumers, but so will governments with “this is to protect you, think of the children” at the start the start overreaching with the laws and regulations that were made to protect you.
I don’t have a solution I just don’t like either option because it’s rare the consumer/citizen actually wins.

Attached: gabrielsheep.gif (788x453, 1.75M)

Hey look, this guy thinks free market operations and trademark are even remotely comparable. What a weirdo.

choosing the lesser evil invariably paves the way for the greater evil.
stop pitting it as false dillema of corprorations vs corporations, or even corporations vs government.
choose a different option.
choose freedom.
decentralize everything --- make it impossible for any of them to hurt you.
he only goes full retard with the "addictive carcinogen" bit.
there is no moral imperative to prohibit willing idiots from engaging in self destructive behavior. heroin doesnt inject iself, nor does nicotine spontaneously fly into your lungs.

There is an argument to be made about marketing addictive substances to impressionable young people. Also, it's irrelevant if it's your personal choice to smoke or not, the carciogen smoke also affects everyone unfortunate enough to be near you.

So the conservative judges are shills who hate a real free market

Clearly didn’t read the fucking article.

tb.h i hate smokers and i belive in genociding them a la sekai seifuku buryaku no zvezda, but so long as they only smoke in their own stinking homes and cars, its no skin off my back what they do in private.
>Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the majority opinion, which was joined by the court’s liberal justices.
>which was joined by the court’s liberal justices.
>liberal

Attached: 8X9vx.png (1050x588, 592K)

Yea, free market isn't something anyone wants. We want well regulated militia.

I think we have moved far past stopping cigarette companies from marketing to children. Forcing companies to pay for advertisements against their products is just trying to waste money.

And no second hand smoke is a myth. All the tests done on it have absurd qualifiers (like being less than 2 feet away) and if you're in a big city, car exhaust is killing way way faster.

>kavanaugh didn't fuck up
Thank Jesus. Having this many conservatards on the court makes me nervous as fuck.

Not really it has more to do with the interpretation of an old case that sets the standard for handling this type of monopoly. Both the affirmation and the dissent make reference to it and interpret it differently.

Being a liberal/conservative judge may have played a roll in the decision but a larger issue is that no one on the court is under 50 and they can't/ won't understand technology.

>conservatards

Please kill yourself you mottled brown mutt cuck.

Election tourist detected. This shithole used to be much more reasonable. It wasn't liberal, but it wasn't conservative like it is now either. It was just anti-establishment and edgy. Newfags like you who jumped in in the last several years don't know this shit. Kill yourself.

Ive been here since 2007 this site has always been liberal leaning in many boards outside of political ones when they existed (in the real sense of liberal) and racist. /new/ was way way way more right leaning than nu/pol/ is too yet newfags whine when someone says something about niggers or jews now.

Whiter than you Cletus. The conservative justices are reliably wrong on almost every fucking issue (see: this one). Enjoy having your 1st and 4th amendment rights further stripped by right wingers. At least you get the 2nd, right?

Not him but what boards were liberal?

>dude I'm so white I support the demographic replacement and destruction of my people

I dont care if you dont like cuckvanaugh retard I care about your ignorant use of conservatard.

>that snide psuedo reddit shit hit at the 2nd amendment

lmao of course you dont think people should have actual liberty or any kind of ability for self reliance. Pathetic fuck.

/b/, like I said liberal in the real sense of the word. I mainly browsed /b/ as well. I'm still liberal to a degree.

And don't get it... Apple certainly has a cost to maintain their servers, update their system etc, that's why they charge 30%, just like Google. If Apple makes the developer pay for their costs, the end user will end up paying the same.

Fuck liberals, fuck jews and fuck the "supreme" court.

Good

Even worse was their bs subscription shit

Can't have a link to take someone to sub outside of the app/web so you're forced inapp sub but then apple takes 30% of that too....

so apple provides nothing for the subscription but takes 30%

>liberal in the real sense of the word
What does that mean? Are you doing the whole "classical liberal" thing?
