use ubuntu untill uunderstand how the command line works, then try installing arch

MX-Linux is what I want to move over to. I like what they're doing there.

Though usually I install Xubuntu onto any non-techie's computer. In every case, they've picked up the basic UI pretty quickly and find it much more straightforward to use than Windows 10.

I could not figure out how to manually partition a Windows machine for Lubuntu, but installing Xubuntu was as easy as reinstalling Windows. GNOME is a monstrosity so I go for the conservative DEs.

fedora workstation (gnome)
plug in the usb, follow the instructions, and get a stream of automatic updates through the gnome app store like you would on windows.
