what is the [BOOT] folder in system install ISOs? and why you don't see it on a CD on which you put the ISO?

when I mount -v iso/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso /mnt/tmp/ I do see a /boot/grub/ folder in there. and there is also a /EFI/boot.

Perhaps whatever ISO you are looking at is made differently. I don't know which you are looking at so idk. I could look at it if you're specific?

virtualbox son

in many different ISOs, for example for Puppy Linux, you see this
but when you burn the iso on a CD, it's gone. I'm not sure whether it's my disk burner's error, or it's normal behavior and the boot folder becomes invisible to generic file managers.

Hi, I'm a newbie
Hello everyone and especially OP, I'm trying to use linux for my work, I started with ubuntu but I loved using archlinux, since you create your system as you want, I installed it on my desktop (Archlinux) and the truth is that I have I learned a little bit more about linux every day, their community is amazed at how they help you.

I am more of networks, I am interested in getting into the language of programming python with respect to scripts, to facilitate my work and those of my colleagues in the company for which I work.

What advice or books would you recommend me to read, to learn more about this well-established and wonderful world of Linux?

thanks buddy for sharing!, enjoy your night!

If you're interested in scripts and not programming in general, start with shell scripting, like bash. Then when you start wanting to do things bash is poor at, you can expand to python.

How can I quickly record a portion of my screen / the content of a window in order to produce a small webm / mp4 video?
This is so I can make it easier to beg for help on the internet. A short video illustrates better than a lengthy worded description of an issue.

I can't decide between Debian and arch.

Apt sucks, but I know apt, I don't feel like learning a new package manager?

There's not much to learn when it comes to pacman, it's pretty simple and most of the AUR helpers are similar to pacman.

xfce 4.14pre1 was released.

According to the El Torito standard, the boot catalog and boot images are embedded in the metadata of an ISO-9660 filesystem and pointed at by a separate boot record volume descriptor, not the primary one used to access the filesystem.
The [BOOT] directory is just a virtual entry in 7-Zip so you can access them anyway.

Attached: specscdrom.png (805x549, 18K)

is there a way to limit maximum DB (decibel) output to speakers/bluetooth connection?
my OS is Manjaro.

occasionally i'll open a video or something else which will play at a much higher volume than most stuff I open. I imagine whoever made it didn't tune the audio level properly.
I don't want to limit the volume because my speakers are weak already. I hope that was clear enough.

I don't know, but what you're describing sounds like "flat-volumes" in pulseaudio.
It's a really stupid default setting that everyone should disable. It causes some applications to open with ear splitting volume levels, and also causes application volumes to deviate from each other over time.

It's even possible that some application can't be heard at all (often causing you to raise your volume, and then when you open other apps your ears bleed).

Try making the file ~/.config/pulse/daemon.conf and adding
>flat-volumes = no
then kill pulse to let it restart
>pulseaudio -k

You can then open up pulseaudio and set all the stream volumes to 100% because they're controlled by the master volume instead.

I'm using elementary. How do I remove applications from "open with"? I want to leave only the applications I really use for each file extension.

What if I just want to highlight a certain region in the screen?

Is there any reason as an end user who doesn't program as much, basically programming as a hobby, to consider to switch to guix?

I've read a bit about how it manages packages and dependencies really well which is an upside when having a really stable system, though I'm not quite sure whether I should consider doing so.

is debian actually experiencing a downfall or its Jow Forums regular shitposting?
my experience with debian recently is ok and mostly just works™ (albeit inside a VM)

The way the project is managed is a bit outdated and prone to mistakes, but the software distribution itself continues to "just work" no less than others.

hi all, I am a linux noob (used xubuntu for a few days, arch for the last week) and I am looking at installing Gentoo tomorrow. only problem is I think it'll take a very long time to compile on my laptop. I have a Ryzen 2600 desktop oc'd to 4.2ghz which would sure help though. I found "Distcc" which looks really neat, but I am afraid of making this install even more complicated than it already is. Any advice? Anyone used it before?

Programming isn't the point of using it. There's lots of other benefits and they are trying to make it require less and less programming knowledge
But in its current state you may find it challenging. I'd also say the challenges go beyond just programming. It can be difficult to figure out library linking problems and such, if you were to try and install 3rd party stuff for example.

Can anyone recommend a good android emulator for linux?

did that, hope it helps.
the only thing i should add is you said "applications" but this only happened on my browser(brave). I don't consume a lot of content locally.

Genymotion is your only option user.
emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Android_emulators

well feel free to also look up other pulseaudio options. You just put them in that same file, maybe there's one to limit max volume, I have no idea.

Good distro for a laptop with a slow ass hdd?
Boot time is horrible on windows takes like 2min and 2 additional min where the hdd is at 100%.

Like 1-2min for Xubuntu.

Is there something slimmer that still has a working DE?
Only want to use it to browse the inet, especially porn desu.

It's what I'm using in an iMac 2011 and it's pretty comfy. I just had to re-enable desktop icons to get that macOS aesthetic and I'm good. Can hardly tell the difference honestly.

At that point I'd fear changing the desktop environment does not help much. You can try installing the lubuntu-desktop metapackage for the LXQt desktop environment in your current Xubuntu installation to see if it makes a difference (just pick that session on the login screen instead of Xfce).

You can also generate a graph to see how all the boot time is spent:
systemd-analyze plot > plot.svg
Open plot.svg in anything that supports SVG images, e.g. Firefox.

is there any gnu/linux software that can automatically update a hosts file entry on my server when my home ip address changes?
i could probably do this using cron and ssh but maybe someone already thought about it and did it better

Attached: b6b3c8b65022ce717690e0febf90769c.png (480x320, 44K)

There's literally no reason to use any DE other than XFCE or KDE, prove me wrong

Protip: You can't

pretty sure the correct method would involve not changing the file.
e.g. using loopback or domain names

>3rd party

Does this mean anything outside their repositories?

Looking for recommendations for a new music player.
Been using Clementine but been having problems where it won't properly update my library unless I make a new playlist which is a full scan of the library.

yes, you have to fix the linking to run binaries that were compiled for normal distros.

Most of the time, you want to use a dyndns client on your home router combined with a server-side solution to update a DNS domain instead, so you can access your home net from anywhere using a known hostname instead of only your server - unless you don't own a domain.
There's commercial services for that, but an internet search will show you lots of different solutions to run your own dynamic DNS service.

who?

i'm getting tired of windows 10's shit and i could just downgrade to windows 7 but linux can do everything i use my computer for so i might as well switch to linux

i'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and learn stuff but i don't want to go full gentoo. i'm familiar with linux but not experienced. i guess that means manjaro or mint?

More like a steady decline into irrelevance. There are a ton of IT boomers who picked it up in the 90s and early 00s, but nobody has much interest in replacing them as they move on or age out.

Is there such a thing as a FOSS phone, or a FOSS-hackable phone? Do you have to go for that librephone thing or is there a DIY approach to this? How far are we away from a phone Richard Stallman would willingly use?

I can't ask this question on smartphone general because they all have Stockholm syndrome.

>i guess that means manjaro or mint?
Those two are you safest bet. Test them both with a live USB and see what suits you and your machine the best.

If you want a GUI music player I suggest Quod Libet, it handles huge libraries pretty well, and it has a handy separate tool for tagging.

I assume LXDE might give sliiightly better performance than XFCE. Would have suggested lubuntu but they switched to LXQt recently, I tried that on an old HDD and it still took 1-2 minutes to boot.

Purism and Gemini PDA (the one with SIM) are your best choices. The DIY modular phone was just a 3 week hype then it disappeared.
The Freerunner is a total meme that won't get anywhere.

There are a bunch of Replicant phones GNU trying to recommend. I applaud their efforts, but those are
-fucking ancient phones
-missing a LOT of functions because proprietary drivers and firmwares (wifi, bt, camera etc).
Might aswell get a dumbphone at this rate.

How good is it for daily driver?

Attached: download (8).jpg (202x250, 13K)

as*

It's not a daily driver. It's an educational exercise.

Why you can't use it as daily driver?

Because you have to be your own distribution team and look out for vulnerabilities and updates of every single component of your system (and maybe complete rebuilds, if fundamental things change) yourself, while even the smallest distributions in terms of head count (something like Void or Arch) have several people to take care of that.

reminder that if you use android, you already have linux installed with a vm on top that runs android, i.e. SN android emulator

Can I use Guix in Termux?

Attached: 1557649736832.jpg (720x960, 129K)

yes

...

>vulnerabilities
True, but do I run something critical, like bank server? No.
>updates
If it is ain't broken - don't update it.

Software running on Termux has to be built for the fact that all userspace lives under /data/data/com.termux/files (the userdata directory for the Termux app on Android), not /.
You have to build Guix yourself at the moment, as the binary armhf/aarch64 builds assume that the store is located under /gnu/store and the database under /var/guix/db. That's a bit difficult as the Termux package sources don't have Guile or Guile development packages so you have to fetch them yourself, too.

But what about one for desktop linux?

Unless I disable antialiasing in w3m, all I get is an image that flickers in when the cursor moves.
Ranger can use w3m or kitty for image previews in the terminal, so could w3m use kitty for image display instead of using its own dodgy resources?

Why is it so hard to set up two monitors with each attached to a different GPU? I'm reading of it working out of the box but that isn't my experience. xrandr doesn't even show the second AMD gpu.

>i3m
>ranger

Attached: lmao.jpg (369x366, 24K)

Thanks. I did some further research and found this issue: github.com/termux/termux-packages/issues/3240

What the problem, frogreddit?

Maybe you have time for flashing grey squares, but I don't.
I'm moving towards a three-browser habit: Firefox for visiting a single page I need to work perfectly, Icecat for browsing and research, w3m for bloated bullshit websites I can't be arsed to load.

Ranger is shit if you need to sift through large numbers of unclassified images, but very quick and precise for everything else.

I have almost entirely replaced everything I do on windows with a linux equivalent so I find myself booting into windows less and less, one of the few things I still boot to do is ripping vinyl to lovely wavesines.
Does anyone know of a linux software mixer that allows me to listen to multiple channels at once? the idea being that I listen to the record as I'm recording it so I can hear potential flaws

Do you capture using line in?

No, It's usb output on my preamp

still could work.
in
>VLC
you can connect to "capture devices" such as webcams, tv dongles, line in etc.

If your preamp provides a capture device in gahnoo+linux you can connect to it this way.

Ok, I'll give that a go, thanks.
I'm assuming if it does provide a capture device I might eventually be able to use any other media player assuming I get familiar enough with it? I really like the look of things like ncmpcpp

How do I make applications see my updated PATH on .bashrc if I open them with dmenu without rebooting my system?
