ProtonMail voluntarily offers Assistance for Real-Time Surveillance

ProtonMail has been dodgy for a while now. You can only access your mail through their website (insecure because they can serve malicious JS) or their Bridge tool (proprietary and closed source). Their API is also completely closed off.

This is just a bad business model. What if someone goes around town and prints your PM address on something offensive to get your account banned? How do you deny that it's not yours?

Exactly. They've said for years that they would open source their apps, but they are still closed after all this time. Some former employee said on GlassDoor that they don't really care about privacy or open source, it's just all a marketing scheme.

Nope. On the backend, it's just a database entry. When the backend receives an email, they just have to do a query for that alias. It can reduce the number of available usernames, but even then, they could just offer randomly generated ones, or append a unique ID on the end of a chosen alias.
There's no reason they can't do it, they just choose not to because they want to charge people who need aliases more money.

They could charge for other things whilst still pushing features to protect users' privacy. They could charge for amount of ingress emails, for example. They haven't considered that though, because they don't care about protecting privacy.
