Shift is necessary to comfortably shift without stretching, space covers both thumbs though without modification many keyboards do not space at the extreme edges for long
if enter had that big area, its likely that it would be prone to failure without significant bracing, making it harder to clean and put back together.

I switched from ISO to ANSI because it's easier to find nice keycaps for that layout. I type Nordic characters with EurKEY. The keyboard on my Thinkpad has Russian characters along with Latin because the spare part was cheaper than just buying US English.

What I don't get is why we limit our keyboards to just the normal QWERTY keys and maybe a numpad. Why not add like 4 more rows of keys at the top for various other commonly used symbols (especially symbols used in maths like Greek alphabet symbols)?
Modern keyboards frustrate me by thinking that less keys is good. I want buttons galore dammit.
