I always typecast my void pointers to whatever type I'm using when I use malloc() or realloc(). I know a void pointer can point to literally anything, so is there any point in downgrading to a less powerful pointer type? The only reason I can think of is type checking.

You have to cast if you want to do anything with them without a bunch of boilerplate hassle that serves no purpose other than to be stubborn about not casting. It's not about *checking* types, it's about taking advantage of compile-time mappings between type and operator.
Consider: If you have two ints, the only handles you have to them are void pointers, and you don't want to cast to int pointers, how do you plan on adding them together?
If you have a struct with a field, and the only handle you have to it is a void pointer and you don't want to cast, how do you intend to read or write that field?
The compiler doesn't need to know what type your data "actually is" (not that such a concept exists in C) but it needs to know what type you *want* your data to be, because that's the only way it can tell what you actually mean when you say to do various things with that data.

In C++ you need to do this if you're for some reason using malloc, because it won't do the conversion implicitly, it'll just create a compile error.
So maybe if you were writing code you wanted to be valid in either c or c++, then that's a reason to do it.
