Never. Once every version other than 10 has been deprecated, they will rebrand 10 to simply be called "Windows" and continue to update it incrementally.

The NT kernel is far superior to linux kernel. Linux is held back by all the unix legacy. Windows already committed all these (and more) mistakes in win9x and did it right second time. Only thing I'd change in the kernel is moving back windowing and graphics to usermode, like how it was originally in NT 3.5 (it was moved for memory saving). As for usermode, win32 should be removed and swapped to a new cleaner subsystem without the dos/win9x crap (NT has support for multiple subsystems, since they originally planned to support OS/2, but it became irrelevant when they got to/near release)

two kernels, XNU as a microkernel and FreeBSD as monolithic kernel, living in same address space, both exposing interface to usermode, and BSD calling into XNU sometimes. This is literally worse than what MS is doing with the skm for HVCI, atleast they have a privilege protection line between them so it makes some limited sense.
there was a series of blog posts an user posted on here a few years ago about the lengths microsoft went to make windows backwards compatible and it was horrifying, windows would be so much better if it didn't have legacy code holding it back so thoroughly

I spent multiple years reversing this shit.
Since drivers are already developed for NT (win9x drivers arent compatible, theres also no win32 in kernelmode) and have a fairly limited set of exposed functions changes overall are rare. if they happen it usually consists of a new function with Ex sticked at end appearing, and the old one getting implemented by a simple call to the new with appropriate arguments filled with data that causes default behavior. They also break backwards compatibility sometimes, usually in the name of security (HVCI banning W&X sections and allocations for example). Also, the syscall interface, unlike in linux, is volatile (and undocumented) and changes between versions, thus usually shifting places where backwards compat is needed into the usermode counterpart, ntdll.

I'm a winfag you retard. Even if they want to eventually transition to XNU as the only kernel, and thus switch to microkernel base its pretty bad because the speed penalities of microkernels. Windows is doing it much better with HVCI and skm since they implement a new privilege separation without significant speed penalty.

Their kernel is one of the best. If you want to point at something thats shit in all current popular kernels its multi-threading, since all were made before multiprocessor was a thing, thus they use lots of expensive spinlocks instead of atomic containers.

I did read way too much on it. Why do you think anything is better than the new Microsoft approach of a microkernel in VTL1 Ring0 and a monolithic kernel in VTL0 Ring0? it provides speed and security over all other models.

What changed a lot is Microsoft making and strictly enforcing guidelines with vendors, more streamlining windows drivers and compatibility. Of course this caused a lot of trouble for them initially, which is represented in vista's reputation.

Hm, thats indeed quite a lot. I've only briefly reversed parts of vista stuff, Major differences i met were WDDM, memory manager and io scheduler. Now that I read i remember i noticed Audio management overhaul, it striked me odd that Beep() was no longer calling into Beep.sys, which was apparently due to that. I did not touch printing or networking, so makes sense I didn't notice those.

Although I wouldn't say its the biggest tech update. the new secure kernel along with HVCI is a huge leap forward. From what I reversed, skm is a completely new microkernel, vastly different from NT. I don't know where they're heading with it, but it's interesting to see something new on the kernel side.
