Noob trying to learn C here
-which resources do you reccomend to learn C
-what is a good project to start with ?
-how do I get into writing drivers ?

>Classes are patriarchal!
>Slave/Master is colonial!

Get a Arduino.
Program in C using AVR.
You can even use the Arduino IDE just dish the C++ code

Actually, 's advice is better than what I would have come up with. You can always get your hands on K&R and read that (and do the examples). I would not dig into drivers until you have a fairly good understanding of C in general.

Trying to help the man out. Is my advice wrong?

Well not really, no. I also appreciate you said it straight into his face and not behind his back.

Would I really get a deep understanding of C by doing this, I don't see this going further than writing for loops
I already have a grasp on the syntax and structures just that it doesnt stick in my head thus I needed a project to make it stick, drivers seemed interesting

If I was pretty, would I be programming C?

>drivers seemed interesting
Indeed. I'd suggest finding a simple device with an open datasheet / specification. NVMe controllers are pretty straight forward, I guess something like a minimal USB driver could be relatively easy to do as well.

I recommend doing stuff in userspace if possible (although not all functionality is available). If you're going down this route, I recommend either using VFIO or accessing sysfs directly and memory mapping registers etc.

The other route, making a kernel module, start by getting familiar with how to make a kernel module (tldp.org/HOWTO/Module-HOWTO/ a bit old but still relevant) and then digging into an existing driver implementation.

>If I was pretty, would I be programming C?
If you don't desire to improve your appearance, i wont try to force it on you. Just in case you weren't joking: don't try to justify your ugliness with anything other than liking your current appearance or laziness.

I appreciate your sincerity, but I really don't care what others think about my appearance. Especially on github. Case in point: the picture is probably eight years old at this point and I simply haven't bothered changing my profile pic from the one I used when I registered. It really shouldn't matter to anyone tbqh.

Yea you will have to.
And plus you'll have a good understanding how hardware with code works.
Start small and grow slowly big.

what drivers in kernel upstream are easiest to understand in your opinion? Where should one start with reading driver code?

>what drivers in kernel upstream are easiest to understand in your opinion?
It depends a bit on your level of understanding of systems and devices. Sound card drivers are fairly simple. Ethernet drivers are also quite simple, if you already have a firm grasp on L2 networking.

But if you don't have a particular device in mind, I'd suggest getting familiar with the kernel APIs. You could, for example, create a dummy block device?

ironically enough, i haven't seen a repo that had one.

i remember you! you're the guy that posted your latex source for cv which i stole.

seems like he received a nice punch to the liver.
or are you referring to that dance?

Yup. Sorry for the messy LaTeX though.

Aaah, that actually makes sense. But what about the lightning strike?

it got me 2 internships so i can't exactly complain

That's great! Although, I'm fairly sure that your own skills landed those jobs. What are you currently doing, if you don't mind me asking? You don't have to share any info or anything, just wondering what people on Jow Forums do.

test automation dev
interview for the 1st internship was kind of funny - main dev asked me what i do in my free time and i said that i fuck around with python and when he asked if i have something to show for it i said that nothing works. he lol'd and accepted me in his team. i did ui tests there.
i'm currently in my 2nd and hopefully last internship and i do api tests and shit. basically back end stuff with apache projects. it's a mess but whatever. i do stuff with python and have a c book that i still want to read in my free time but i think i should find another hobby apart from watching animus and reading mangos. i don't understand electricity so i might fuck around with that arduino that sits in my drawer.

Attached: LKq4eYb.jpg (530x371, 239K)

That's cool user. Yeah, electricity isn't my strong suite either, but I do mess around with hobby electronics just for fun from time to time. As for learning C, I think using an Arduino is a great starting point (although it's like sepples).

How do we become as smart as you? Serious question. Do you have any tips to become a better programmer?

>you used to have a screenshot on your github repo but a no-fun contributor removed it

Attached: 1307177554051.png (482x441, 226K)

w/e dumdum

>How do we become as smart as you?
First of all, I'm not smart. I'm just persistent. Where most of my friends from my studies dropped out after graduating, I stayed around to do a master's and then later a PhD. I'm in no way a genius, and if you look at my actual track record, you'll see that I spend a lot longer time than normal on both my master's and my PhD (the latter which I'm still not done with).

I've made an active choice in order to get where I am today, for example I decided to continue doing my master's even though I had landed a comfy webdev job. After I graduated my master's, I made a real effort in finding embedded and system's programming jobs, even though that in practice meant a pay cut. I decided to do a PhD for another company, even though that meant even yet a pay cut (for three years, now I am employed by that company and make a normal software engineer salary). I've sacrificed having a social life and a comfy job for work, work, and more work. But my personal opinion is that I'd rather work with something interesting than just cashing in a comfy salary doing a job that doesn't require much.

>Do you have any tips to become a better programmer?
I don't know for programming in general, but for understanding how stuff works, I've always done a "bottom up" approach, really forcing myself to understand what's going on on the most fundamental level, before moving upwards. This is a slow and tedious process, but in return I have a fairly good understanding of how stuff works.

As for programming in general, practice makes perfect I guess. Just do a lot of it.

>dropped out after graduating
I don't think you know what dropped out means

Forgot English for a moment. I guess "quit" would have been a better phrasing?

Wtf is a GPU accelerated storage solution

Storage for GPU accelerated applications (databases, machine learning, etc.)

I'm too stupid to understand. How's that any different than just sorting it normally and then running the application with the gpu

The library I’ve made allows direct disk access from a GPU. In fact, one of the benchmarks is a NVMe driver running entirely on a GPU and initiating disk access without involving the CPU at all (beyond the initial set up of the disk), so called PCIe peer to peer DMA. It also allows sharing of a single disk between multiple GPUs.

Since you avoid going through memory (zero copy) you get very high bandwidth, and avoiding CPU synchronisation means very low latency for random access.

>there's only one master branch
>commits that fail to compile are pushed to master

However, that’s only half the fun. I also support a mode using shared memory across multiple computers in a PCIe cluster, and this allows multiple PCIe-interconnected nodes (and GPUs within them) to simultaneously share the disk and data is read from and written to GPU memory directly. I can even do intelligent stuff such as hosting command queues in memory close to the disk, while pushing completions to memory close to the completer threads etc. This mode, however, requires special PCIe interconnection hardware and a semi-proprietary driver stack, but it’s what makes it really nice IMHO. The local stuff is just neat.
