If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Do not dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

What's the best note taking software for GNU/Linux? I want to utilize my old wacom tablet for that, writing math formulas inside of org-mode seems too complicated.

That retards in arch instead of building vscode binary are running electron with vscode entry script, for what purpose. This is why it restarts into electro. But i still have no idea how to fix that,
I used sublime before vscode years ago and didn't liked it. Plugins are simply lacking and barely working for webshit. Also proprietary. As for vscodium, i don't really like to use aur for things i want to update since it's bothersome. But i guess i have no choice, vscodium so be it.

>updateing from aur is bothersome

without helpers it is bothersome, don't kid yourself

Am about to install linux for first time. Wanted to install gentoo first, but then realized only a retard no-lifer would do such a thing on a laptop. So I've been reading up on Arch Linux.

Anyone have experience with it on XPS 9560?
How is battery life compared to Jewdows?

You'll need to install tlp, configure it and you'll still have roughly 15-25% worse battery time and i little bit warmer chasis/keyboard.

i just tried gimp and it's shit
how is krita? can it be used to replace photoshop?

Krita is a painting software first and foremost. You can use it for simple editing, but it's will not be able to fully replace photoshop.

I'm new to linux but i got into it for a specific purpose which would be trying to run OBS (open broadcaster software) on a raspberry pi. I saw some tutorials with it working on Kali linux but for some reason i cant get it to run on the Pi. Is there another lightweight distro that could possibly run it?

Is there a debian-based distro (so that I can use deb packages) that only comes with gnu userland and nothing else? I mean no DE, no WM, not even openssh nothing except the kernel and coreutils.

there are no note taking software that support tablets afaik
use gimp or krita

...debian netinst?

I'm thinking of installing Gentoo instead of Guix on my librebooted X200 (I intend to only install entirely free software, though). Is the X200 processor capable of compiling all the required packages? I've never successfully installed Gentoo before so I'm unsure if it's a wise idea to go for Gentoo. (will it take weeks to compile.....?)

install arch and then a light DE like xfce

it can compile like any processor, the issue is how long will it take to compile programs.

What are you using, raspbian? It seems like you need openmax, openmax plugin for obs and choose supported profile.

Alright i'll try it. I've just been trying to see how far i can push the Pi and if it can take over streaming some images for a client of mine. Currently doing the images on a mini PC but that has gotten expensive (seeing as it has to be on 24/7). However a friend gave me pic related and i've been toying with the idea of switching over to the Pi to handle the work seeing as it would only be streaming some images and audio sometimes.

Attached: 3c3c3c3.jpg (1560x780, 314K)

I'm aware of that; let me rephrase my concerns:
I want a system to run as efficiently as possible (since the X200 already is relatively slow) but I don't consider waiting a week for my X200 to compile the updates as efficient. So I'm trying to weigh out the pros and the cons here.

No i'm not using raspbian at the moment as i didnt find any info on streaming with it but i'll look up your suggestion

it is a dual core so it will take its time, specially with big shit like GCC or a browser. You could install light stuff and use precompiled binaries for stuff like the web browser. Like, install a window manager instead of a DE, that said, you will still wait for like a day for big stuff like gcc or systemd, you could use openrc and configure manually the kernel instead of using genkernel

thanks for the insight, I'll just try it and see how it goes and return to Guix if I lose my patience

Not trying to be an ass, but googling running OBS on a raspberry pi already gives really good info... from what I've read OBS doesn't run well on the Pi's hardware... are you new to linux?

I went ahead and installed gentoo on my shitty 7-year old asus laptop. Pretty much everything seems to be working properly except the shutdown command and the power button, the system does not shut down but sends me to the tty login and the power button does nothing when pressed. How can I fix this?

Attached: 0% satisfaction guarantee.jpg (287x424, 18K)

Does running "X -configure" produce an xorg.conf that represents my whole current X server layout or does it just produce minimum fields like devices and drivers?

yah pretty new to linux i mentuined it a few posts back. Alot of the info out there via google isnt really helpful and alot of it isnt in regards to streaming live video. I dont want to do that. I just need to stream a static image with some audio. It doesnt even need to be OBS anything at all that could help me accomplish that. Which is what initially led me unto Kali as the best possible choice as OBS is pretty stable on it and its impact on the Pi wouldn't be that much. However this is what i get is pic related when i try.

How do I force a carriage return after each directory's name?
ls > name_of_text_document.txt
That's what I'm using. When I open it on a M$ machine in notepad it's not a list. I want it to look like I had typed "ls -l" in a terminal.

pipe into sed -e 's/$/\r/' first

Anyone use Gentoo unironically? Why? Is there an actual benefit to compiling everything?

ls | sed -e 's/$/\r/' > name_of_text_document.txt
?

yes

Thank you.
Do you know why on a Linux text editor, the first way I did it, it shows a carriage return after every line, but in Windows notepad it doesn't?

Because *nix only uses lf as line sparator and cr is just an another symbol. But most of the editors will replace crlf or cr with lf automatically.

>cr is just an another symbol.
Thanks. Wasn't aware it was handled like that, but it makes sense now.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mis-take in your posts. Luckily, the users of GNU/Linux are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have referred to the GNU/Linux system as "Linux", but Linux is just a part of the system! Whoops! Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. You should always remember to say or write "GNU/Linux", unless you are referring to the kernel "Linux" alone!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to your new operating system!

This is most likely your problem.
Remember that big bad youtube doesn't like people borrowing and sharing videos with their neighbors. They want to own """own""" our videos. So they try to do things to break automated downloaders from time to time, including youtube-dl. And so the good folks developing the software have to keep on top of youtube's jewish tricks.

TL;DR Update your youtube-dl
yours is several months out o date.

I didn't realize how out of date it was, many thanks user. I'll just make a little function to update it by command instead of using apt.

>jewish tricks
Capitalism is more likely a product of Christian Protestantism than of the Jews (read Max Weber)

There's nothing particularly "capitalist" about what they do, nor is there anything at all anti-capitalist about being against what they do.

I invite you to consider how this conversation would sound if the "product" were screwdrivers instead, and we could only rent screwdrivers from the store instead of owning them after purchase.
Would you consider me anti-capitalist for thinking that's exploitive and not wanting to put up with their dumb business model?

Attached: abYQv1p_460s.jpg (460x1131, 106K)

Feel free to set up your own screwdriver store with your own policy but don't you dare to sell the screwdrivers you rented elsewhere
if you go against this capitalist illusion of property by making the rented screwdrivers "your property" anyway (in other words: stealing) you're acting against the capitalist rules
the essence of capitalism is exploitation so if you don't want to put up with their "dumb" exploitative business model does make you an anti-capitalist
now, there's nothing wrong with being anti-capitalist, also it doesn't turn you into a commie per se, please don't feel insulted when I do consider you an anti-capitalist

nota bene
>on youtube you, the user, is the product, not the videos.

YouTube/Google's business model is 100% capitalist. And I just wanted to point out that your anti-Semitic remark has no foundation.

Good post.

This has nothing to do with my right to dislike something.

In fact I disagree. It is about the least capitalist idea you've ever come across, but you just don't realize it.
I base this claim on the fact that their model is 100% artificial and can ONLY exist through government intervention. It IS government intervention itself.

So I would put forth that it's you who is pushing government intervention into business down my throat and therefore you who are anti-capitalist.

You have your right to be stupid, but your "ideology" will never work and has historical failure

I've already explained why my view is more capitalist than yours. So please stop assigning your communism strawman to me, thanks.

>still a better solution that communism
>and monarchy
woah woah woah, let's hear some arguments. Tou can't just slap another system onto your takedown of another and imply that it relates.

>my right to dislike something.
You have the right to dislike whatever, but your only option to not put up with their business model, as you put it, is to not use their services. But you do, just not by their terms and conditions by using a third party client. By this you're breaking the capitalist contract, which as you correctly stated can only exist through government intervention, so technically you're not only an anti-capitalist but also an anarchist.

No one is FORCING you to use youtube, dont use it if you dont like their rules.
If you're "more capitalistic" then you would understand free market and kindly fuck off to another server

tiling wms suck for actual work

>then you would understand free market
Ok, so please explain to me how it's the free market that's preventing me from using youtube-dl?

Hint: It's not. There is 0% free market in any terms of service that give me information and say I can't save it.
That is 100.0% government intervention and 0.0% free market.

Linux

Attached: 1538715275456.jpg (493x657, 69K)

It's not the free market directly preventing you from using youtube-dl, it's the developers at YouTube who are trying to prevent you from using youtube-dl, trying to keep their position on the free market

And how can they prevent me?

They are literally streaming data to my machine for free as a part of their service. All youtube-dl does is "remember" that data.
So this is like building a business around teaching people stuff and then saying they have to forget it.

How do you build that business?
You CAN'T without government intervention. That's just how Capitalism works user. Some businesses work and some business ideas don't.
Youtube's (and other services like it) DON'T work in a purely Capitalist economy. They only work in a pseudo-capitalist economy via government intervention and clever propaganda to make people think what they're doing is capitalist when it couldn't be further from it.

What happens when you need a phone to have a decent life. All phones are botnet. No competition all phones have botnet and illegal to own botnetless phone. Slowly more invasive botnet. Who should have the power? When is this corruption in democracy? Should someone have this much power? Does free market capitalism create a system where power gets centralized?

Should people have rights? Should people have power to decide what is too much? Which governing system? Which economic system?

Ignorant populace. Selfish short sighted. Money. Visibility. Words...

Pick anything from above to response to or dont. Think your own. Get inspired. Anything is ok to me.

schizo post but the fact that there is no homebrew phone market is evidence that it really is a botnet industry.

The world is waiting for Purism's Librem.

How do I write a if/then/else statment on a single line?

Eg

Ahh got it,
if [ -d Downloads ] ; then echo asdf ; else echo qwkr ; fi

Is democracy corrupt when most informed people want something but people in power dont give?

Example Hong Kong current situation or if Puerto Rico wants state hood. Or people want problems fixed but nothing is done.

The problem with your premise is that informed people are not always right. In a democracy, many people who seem informed are actually (((informed))) by media with an agenda.

Thanks. Now I got

there are benefits to monarchy. Game of Thrones was a hit piece.

>Ok, so please explain to me how it's the free market that's preventing me from using youtube-dl?
Any service deems how its service is used. If you do not like how youtube uses its service, you can kindly go fuck your self and use another service.

And besides, why don't go to your capitalist corporation if you want to be "productive" in your sense.

>your "ideology"
there are dozens of collectivist ideologies.
there are dozens of fascist ideologies.
You obstruct clear thinking by maintaining the idea that human thought consists of just a couple of ideologies, which stems from cold war era's intellectual dwarfism. Living in the 50s must be amazing. But don't get frustrated when you are outed as an intellectual dwarf.

Gentoo must compile at all times, unlike Guix that can do without incessant compiling.

will try that, thanks.

Switching to dwm from i3wm, am I falling for a meme?

bspwm and dwm are both good
think about why specifically you're doing it, is i3 really that bad? do you really need to change?

Well I'm doing it because I really like the concept of being able to switch my tiling layout on the fly from different presets
