mastodon is twitter clone that runs off of activity pub. activitypub is basically a federated social media protocol. Here's a list of a couple sites that use activitypub:

>pawoo.net - japanese instance, uses mastodon, mostly anime and porn
>baraag.net - mastodon instance that allows lolicon/shotacon
>mastodon.social - run by the mastodon maintainers, very hostile towards other instances
>peer.tube - youtube clone
>pixelfed.social - instagram clone

Note that despite some of them being youtube clones and some of them being twitter clones, any user on one instance can follow a user on another instance. For example, I could follow a peertube channel from pawoo.net and whenever a new video is uploaded, it appears like a tweet to me.

If your instance is blocked by another instance, interactions are severely limited (I believe you can still follow people, but can't interact with them in any way).

Anyways, gab is joining in, so the mastodon maintainers are realizing that they're using an open protocol and can't force other instances to block gab, so they're trying the next best thing and pressuring application developers to hardcode the blocking of gab in their phone apps.

both gab's site and their twitter feed have always struck me a cynical attempt to capitalise on a niche market. some of the stuff on that getongab twitter account really is so hamfisted and corny that you could change the handle to something like @magapede69 @ladypedeboomer420 and i'd believe it t b h. the fact that the site is founded by someone who made money off online ad analytics only makes me believe that idea more.

Mastodon is used by trannies, onions techies, furries, pedos, gays, communists, you name it. I have accounts on many Mastodon instances (for spam purposes) and the timelines are always filled with these people.

Pawoo is the most popular instance since it's backed by pixiv. It has a few hundred thousand users but the active user count is also not bad. There's new posts every few seconds.

Generally, each instance is more focused on some topic (pawoo being anime art) so communities tend to be smaller but more focused. Even still, it doesn't really matter which you join since you can just interact with other instances anyways (the only instances that block people are the social justice/lgbtq2braap instances so it's not like you're at a loss)
