Is there a real alternative to google maps?
I don't use the turn by turn directions but for route planning, it's immensely useful.

For mobile:

OS: Lineage OS with MicroG (to escape Android botnet and Google Play services)
Store: Fdroid/Yalp Store (as Google Play Store replacement)
Browser: Fennec
Use alternative/open source apps as much as you can.

For desktop:

Browser: Firefox
Search: DuckDuckGo (thou still using Google occasionally)
Mail: Buy your domain and set Yandex Mail for free

For content makers, maybe. But I use site:youtube.com "searchterm" on duckduckgo and mpv + youtube URL in the terminal to watch youtube videos. Either that or DDL with youtube-dl.

look at the map on OSM or paper. then use your brain to figure out how to get from A to B. Either write that down, or just remember it. If you need traffic alerts, turn on the radio, any city large enough to have significant traffic jams will have a radio station that reports on them every ten minutes. If you can't spare ten minutes, you should have left earlier.

maps.me can work from GPS with no internet connection on a phone. I'm not sure it's 100% user-respecting, but it's based on OSM and it's not Google Maps.

Google maps are very useful. Using them with a proper anti-tracking addon is all you really need.
Aurora store is more maintained than Yalp and has better interface. Plus it utilizes Exodus tracker list which is super useful.

openstreetmap is a good alternative for gMaps. Since it's free/libre it's downloadable in all supported apps so you can use them offline (ex. OsmAnd).

Apart from that, the only way anything G()()gle touches my system is from posting here-- which I also do from random unbanned vpngate VPNs via autovpn, which is rather spray and pray as far as actually finding one is concerned (though I usually have good luck with Korea), with noscript captcha, of course.

Chromium is open source. Brave stripped out Google and added great things no other browser has. Firefox is trash and has a political agenda.

There's no viable alternative for YouTube because it's not a viable business.

I'm using firefox, Duck duck go and protonmail. Only use gmail as trashmail. I wish I could get rid of youtube tho.
