China represent less than 10% of US exports. The Chinese market is mostly closed to the USA outside of agriculture and energy and other products which it can not produce yet. The Americans as a whole have the leverage even though individual American companies and producer will be hurt in a trade war and will lobby for deescalation.

China has been doing it for decades with it closed off economy and hostile business practices that force trade secrets into the open. For a couple of decades this was a good deal for the USA and other western countries because the cheap labour offset those costs and because the West thought that China would become liberalized through this exchange. The West was wrong about liberalization and the calculus for cheap labour no longer holds.
