It really is a crappy acronym/ name that hurts adoption. For those unaware, gimp is pejorative for someone with a physical disability, similar to but not as severe as something like "cripple" . It can also have a niche sexual/fetish meaning as in gimp suit, usually related to a submissive in a mobility / sense impairing kit.

The program really could use a new name. It's like if it was called Fast Accurate Graphics , you couldn't seriously get adoption to grow among normies , thus resources to improve the program, if people were saying ",Oh yeah just use FAG " or " I FAG'd it up earlier today" same thing with GIMP

as a graphic designer who relies on Illustrator, i would argue that raster editor or painting program doesn't need to know how to draw geometric shapes. in the other hand, if bezier selections make sense as a very, very handy photo-manipulation feature, then it would also make sense for that program being able to draw, fill and outline various vector shapes. i think Affinity has a thing that simply unifies AI and PS features in one program and you switch between raster and vector modes. and then you have new kind of vector editors that specialize in UI layouts, like Sketch and Adobe XD, but their features emerge in other editors too, because people still tend to use AI for interface design. free software is so far behind professional demands. gimp is almost like weird archaic UI on top of imagemagic.
