Why do people make an exception to using this glorified internet chatroom with absolutely no privacy included?

Slick interface, and most importantly everyone else uses it.

People are lonely and want to meet other people to feel less alone. They don't care if they have to forgo security to get social interaction conveniently.

Kind of like how a lot of people post on Jow Forums when they know their IP is logged

>most importantly everyone else uses it
It's the only reason
This. Steal your neighbors wifi and post.

>exception
user, normies don't give a shit about privacy

It's easy to use and all m friends (like 5 people) have it

Because it's the only app providing the server control functions, game tie-in functions and voicechat functions that people demand. I'm part of a group that switch with much protest because Valve still can't get their shit together about Steam chat.

because no one will switch
>inb4 change starts with you

its pretty good to use, besides the ridiculous ram usage its okay.

Most people who use it are trannies or trannies who are unaware that they're trannies.

Because they are not retards like you, OP.

As others say, it's popular, easy to use, and full featured etc...despite being centralized proprietary zero privacy exploited junk.

So here's the thing. We need to move away from Discord now, in order to eventually build enough momentum to make it a significant alternative. So depending on you and your friends needs use open source encrypted stuff instead.

Matrix.org network and Riot.im client are probably the best places to start as an analog to discord or slack

Because IRC legitimately feels like a relic compared to Discord, and the open source options just haven't matured enough yet.

IRC? It's open, standards based, decentralised, proven technology.

Ditto for Usenet instead of Leddit/4chinz for discussion.

Attached: weechat-irc.png (1351x663, 344K)

i think the problem is, it's indefinately more easy for a pleb to setup a discord, IRC and as far as i know even matrix/riot require setting up your own server, infrastrucutre and bandwith.

Those are both fine in the same way that Mumble is good gaming VoIP and best of it's breed, but IRC is limited to chat only and hard to use for normies. Usenet is even harder and us more of it's own thing even via forums or imageboards.

Discord let's them have lots of features all together for free, easily. That's why in general Matrix is the only thing as a real alternative for the whole package. This is not to say it can't be added to but it's the best starting point for people who expect Discord general features and a unified setup

>classifying vermin as people

Yikes.

Not at all. Someone needs to set up an instance, but since it's federated all you need is an account somewhere to talk to people everywhere . Normies can sign up on the Riot server for instance easily, no need to host their own. However if someone wants to set up their own and be anonmcprivacy@privacyfagmatrix, they can still talk to [email protected]

IRC is honestly better.

>numerous servers, can talk on another if one goes down
>Can host a Tor IRC server

I was disappointed when everyone switched away from mumble.

I don't want 5000 features when I am literally just trying to talk to someone.

>but IRC is limited to chat only

So you're complaining that IRC does exactly what it's supposed to?

No. It does fine for what it is intended. However it does not get to why people use Discord instead; failing to understand that will just have more interest, users, assets etc...devoted to Discord.

If you're relying on a server you connect to on the internet to provide you privacy then you're doing it wrong

It's like IRC, but better in most every way.
Still wish IRC was more popular, I miss all the fun roleplay and mafia channels.

My only huge gripe with discord is that they can ban you for modifying the css of the page which is fucking stupid, and they're also banning third party clients which is stupid because it allows people to come up with multi-solutions. But I guess that would go against nitro huh...

It really doesn't make sense when I think of it, as nitro benefits are mostly server or account side, so I can't see why they block attempts to mod or use unofficial clients. Hell, even bigger and shittier companies than Discord',s have figured out it's better to have some people using your service with mods or extensions, than these same tech adept people to push for changing entirely.

Of course this is a crappy typical proprietary thing to do as Matrix / Riot is open and federated while also supporting bridges to proprietary apps making it a multi client

cranky because you dont have friends to use discord with arent you

I don't need privacy to send memes to my internet friends.

How could they tell if you modify the CSS?

I don't see what's so hard to understand. I Haye discord to but if you talk to people online you pretty much have to use it. Everyone online community uses it, most people who use VoIP regularly use it. IRC shit is irrelevant to 95% of discord users, it replaced TeamSpeak and more importantly Skype which is what msot normal people use it for. I'd rather not use it but it's impossible to get away from.

The paranoid side of me wants to say that it's because their client is doing something specific and that they wouldn't want third party softwares to bypass that functionality, and my mind goes to data mining. It wouldn't surprise me that it's the reason why they will not allow people to hack away discord clients.

Because we are to busy living our lives and enjoying it to worry about stupid Jow Forums muh privacy bullshit. Jesus fucking christ why do I even visit this place anymore.

Quite telling that you can't provide a fucking current image of IRC because you probably don't use it yourself. Even as someone who uses it from time to time for tech shit I find it clunky compared to Discord and I've been using IRC since the 90s.

Attached: 2019-07-05-193311.png (1913x1049, 1.98M)

here's why discord is attractive to users:
>server side history = you don't need a fucking bouncer anymore
>text chat, media and file sharing, voice chat, video chat with screen sharing all provided in a single simple to use package
>no hassle sign up - just pick a user name, a password and provide your e-mail address and you're good to go
>works quickly and reliably most of the time
the only real alternative available at this moment is the matrix protocol, but it still has a long way to go before it becomes normie friendly

>here's why discord is attractive to users:
Nope. There was a lot programs that do that but they did their marketing with focus in gamers and "gamers girls".

My problem with IRC was the IP leaking and resultant port scanning.

Because it's extremely convenient.
I'm all for a free alternative that has IRC-like chat rooms, preview for media(images, video, articles, music, etc.), voice even though discord's is shit, a mobile version for on the go, etc. (Avatars are just an extra but I don't mind them.) Make all of that open sourced and let me host the chatroom i.e. the server and I'll shill it every single day.

The kiddies were never taught to use IRC, and because Discord was shilled so hard by the mainstream schizoids.

It's a blessing, really.

what is matrix

This

but thats against unix philosophy

damn dude ewhered u get that irc theme

>discord incels

>owned by facebook
i think ill take gaymur trash over that thanks

>because everyone uses it
feels bad man, at least there is a web version and only what you say is logged.
Discord is so accessible now too that everyone has it and has taken over for what used to be in-game chats on servers. Some game servers are 100% quiet now and it's disturbing. But I also understand that everyone is a YouTuber / Twitch streamer now so anything / everything will be recorded and you can't just have fun without somebody uploading you to YouTube and have potentially thousands of people laughing at / with you, while the fuck who like instigated / baited you into doing said thing.
FUck nIgGers

If they don't see it, they don't believe it.

Until some mainstream media outlet exposes them as data leeches, normies won't do shit. Heck, even then, they will continue to use it, just as they do with Facebook and instagram.

The difference, tho, is that your data on Discord is not tied to any real identity, no address, nothing but IP and fuzzy shit you're typing in there. So, it's comparable to the data that websites collect when you're visiting and searching something on them.

unless you're using it on your phone

>The difference, tho, is that your data on Discord is not tied to any real identity, no address, nothing but IP and fuzzy shit you're typing in there.
I'd have some doubts on that especially when you can mobilepost discord. I don't have a dedicated throwaway e-mail service, so the alternative is generate a 16 random character address on cock.li. If they saw that they don't know it's me, but what if they can associate that throwaway e-mail with me? It'd be fucking over.

yeah i felt like this when i learned how to write a perl script too you moron

Ease of use/popular. have those two things and retards lap it up.
In an argument, you need to compare like to like. Jow Forums and discord are different. I understand the scrutiny. It is out of place.
IRC seems to be the most likely alt. Now, there needs to be a suitable replacement for shitty services that are easy to use and is easily accessible.

I'm into esports and most teams I've been on use discord just for text chat and mumble for actual match/scrim comms due to low latency. I feel like they could be a legit group to market to, considering they're the only people who still use standalone voip. Unfortunately, pick up games are still organized via discord and most leagues have invaluable discord channels for free agents, booking scrims, contacting admins, etc.
Unless you're a tech autist (like me), no one of themwould seriously see any benefit of switching away from all that usefulness to riot.im and starting from scratch, trying to convince the entire competitive community of a game off a platform.

I don't make an exception because I don't care about my Discord privacy in the first place. Like a Steam account or anything else related I simply give no shits about what they do with that data. Oh you know what games I play and how much? That's not information that I would consider private in the first place. It's something insanely casual that you can mention to anyone. Security will always be more important than privacy but since everyone here is either young or permanently unemployed there's very few people who will agree with this on Jow Forums

>There was a lot programs that do that
Please mention them. Discord does them all in one clusterfuck. Remember the convenience and features in mind because as far as I know, there are no true alternatives yet aside from riot+matrix

skype

Skype has absolutely no equivalent to guilds, Discord's central concept

Well, now we're back to the privacy problem.

>Why do people make an exception to using this glorified internet chatroom with absolutely no privacy included?
because it has been marketed to death via shit-tier streamers and youtube 'content creators'. lots of advertising money poured into it.

Yeah, which is why I only use the website version.
I avoid using either the phone or desktop "app".

>not using facebook messenger
>not using google hangouts
what, are you scared.
damn little nazi devils, scared of the big boys

this

Still nothing like guilds in either one. Are you even trying? You sound like you're one of the people who disregarded Instagram because to them it was just a Hipstamatic clone. You overlook the basics.

Zoomer trash.

but its ugly and you can't share pics/vids

My messages is encrypted language inside a secret room in club pengiun, so that the mods can't find us.

LOL fag.

heh, nsa yet to find us.
our backup is POH in RuneScape 3 (not OSRS)

BECAUSE IT'S ZOOMER GAMER TRASH THAT EVERYONE USES AND REFUSES TO USE ANYTHING ELSE. THEY'LL BULLY YOU INTO SUBMISSION IF YOU USE ANYTHING ELSE. THIS IS FUCKING SHIT BECAUSE EVERY FUCKING GAME OR SERVER USES DISCORD AND IN ORDER TO PROGRESS, MAKE FRIENDS OR DO ANYTHING IT HAS TO BE ON THIS SHITTY PROGRAM.

>slick
>free
>everyone else is using it
>it literally just works

enjoy being picked up by literally everyone, including people paid to arrest you for doing this

it's literally the ultimate anti-privacy tool, it tells a whole region who and where you are

>skype
>works quickly and reliable
You may choose One

most users do not care about software philosophy, in fact, the vast majority of people do not know what "software philosophy" is.

you are retarded

much easier to set up and understand than matrix. I'd prefer to set that up but it seems like it'd take a lot of time and I'd have to pay for a url.

FCC? never heard of them
imagine being such an edgelord you actually have worse opsec than everyone else, let alone anyone using tor
both of them are literally just social media. just because people on Jow Forums use no-no words doesn't mean it confers some sort of special status onto it's users

"Social media" might as well be a platform where individuals speak with other individuals. And, Jow Forums is the same as Facebook. You are wrong. Yes, people here use "no-no words" but, that doesn't mean Jow Forums and Facebook are the same. If you genuinely believe that, you are retarded.

i mean they're relatively unhierarchical, group-oriented, and for the purpose of socialization over pure knowledge sharing or business dealings. while there are quite a few websites like this, and quite a few differences between them, they also are quite different from other websites.
i think comparisons between them are sensical as long as those comparisons do not rely on ignorance of the differences that do exist between the two

>i mean they're relatively unhierarchical, group-oriented, and for the purpose of socialization over pure knowledge sharing or business dealings.
A website that doesn't keep track of "x" number friends you have "X," number of posts...Let's hope you aren't a traditional celebrity of any kind...
You are missing the basics: Jow Forums response/replies=nobody to nobody.
Facebook response/replies=out in the open person vs. out in the open person. Or, worse yet, someone who is well known (like a celebrity) where people will support them without even given a second thought.
You are wrong. This is a fruitless argument. Don't travel down this road.

i choose skype then

i'm not missing the basics, i just doesn't consider them as basics, however important they may be. socialization doesn't have to be such an identity-oriented thing. i would actually argue that facebook's model is an outlier as well. your identity on youtube or twitter isn't necessarily wholly linked to your irl identity and real name like it is on fb, and on Jow Forums names and personalities do emerge from the anonymous fog

We needed somewhere to go after they shut down OSCAR
I miss pidgin

>"Social media" might as well be a platform where individuals speak with other individuals.
it is
>And, Jow Forums is the same as Facebook.
in 2019 it basically is, and if you don't recognize that you are the reason why.

Anyone know a FOSS alternative to Discord/Mumble where one can easily share any type of file? All you can do on Mumble is share pics, and nothing else I think.

In 2030 Discord could be bought out by Facebook or Amazon

Will the furry staff be gone by then?

Um mumble is FLOSS?
We can just change it to allow uploads of all file types and sizes

It's not a question of whether someone from the fandom runs it
We should be advocating privacy and look to work on actually making a Discord replacement, not resorting to pointless fascist attacks which is time better spent elsewhere
If you don't like people on the basis that they are furry then just ignore them

>and on Jow Forums names and personalities do emerge from the anonymous fog
Within much ambiguity, yes. This is where ideas clash.
>i would actually argue that facebook's model is an outlier as well. your identity on youtube or twitter isn't necessarily wholly linked to your irl identity and real name like it is on fb.
It's all connected. The links are there and you don't see the point in eliminating them.
>it is
missed the point.
>in 2019 it basically is, and if you don't recognize that you are the reason why.
If you don't recognize that it isn't, you're the reason why some people "give up." By this, I mean, in even attempting to hide their identity.

use retroshare to share your naughty, disgusting video and audio files or whatever it is you need to expose your friends to

why hasn't anyone done it yet then?

Because no one asks for help?
I'm trying to look through the source to find a line that says about uploading files, it's confuzzling

Sorry, springle. Didn't know Facebook differentiated between cubs and outright child porn. I guess only Hitler would see the similarities.

because its easy to use
and no one cares about privacy since we dont fucking share anything of value via discord

I miss MSN.

Attached: 17672457.gif (320x240, 603K)

Even North Korean people have better privacy than this.
No NSA spies can even get into their Intranet to begin with.

It's fine you've always got your populist president to solve this crisis

Who? We don't have one of those

Literally just because everyone else uses it, I don't think anyone actually likes it
