The only change is that Xorg manages hardware as well, but less so now that there's the modern Linux kernel DRI related infrastructure available. My understanding is wayland is a simpler system to just handle input and compose windows together via an API and that doesn't include a network protocol that bearly sees any use. The performance of the X protocol has always been bad and is now more a collection of hacks than any cohesive system.
