Also, as far as urban planning, historically there was a good backbone for actually obtaining proper public transport, it's just that the retarded ass voters declined it twice. So the locals get to pay 10x the price. And, the Bogue Plan was a comprehensive plan for the entire metro area, but it was roundly rejected due to cost a century ago.
Also, the bridges across the Sound were supposed to be built 50 years ago, but again, rejected by voters, so they are stuck with stupid floating highway decks/ferries.
Sure, rents are worse in the Bay Area, but you get better weather, greater variety, and much better international connections unless if you only go to Bongistan.
