oh it's just how nix works, i have literally the same packages as my previous arch install that had 600.
Arch and other mainstream distros packages stuff diferently, latex there will cause 100 packages while here it's almost 4000 just bu itself just because every font is a package and other small stuff lke that. As a matter of fact this is quite the minimaist setup with about 250MB/8GB in RAM on idle

very much, it's even killed my constant urge to distro hop because it had everything i wanted, here are a few points
*Extremely stable as in you physically cannot break it no matter
*Can be rolling edge or slow release because in reality it's a source based distro
*It's a source based distro but there is a binary for every package so you only compile from source when you write your own package
*It uses a domain specific langauge to write stuff so it's intuitive and easy to write my own packages, I'm no dev (in medical school) but i contribute to the nixpkgs repository
*You have one config file that makes your entire system so if i ever want to share my setup or replicate it on a different machine all i have to do is copy a text file and type nixos-install
*I can EASILY try out other people's rices since all i have to do is copy paste
*the entire project is PhD study so it's a serious distro that has scientific reasons for existing, as an academix i appreciate its not a hobbyist distro

How is it on the security side? I'm actually thinking of switching to either this or Alpine. I don't need something as tight as Cube but still something close to this.

i would shill for it but i can't lie i am not the right person to ask. If i had to ask you should ask maybe the #nixos irc channel. I am not a developer by any means so i wouldn't know the smallest details and i have not read the source code.
I don't know what you mean by security really too.
Security is a topic where you probably need an expert's opinion. But when it comes to packages they are all audited and if you don't trust binaries you can choose to ompile from source and if you still don't trust expressions for installing from source provided by the distro you can write your own

quick question about xmobar (i assume that's what that bar is) does it allow you to write your own status bar from shell scripts sorta like i3blocks? that's the one thing i can't find docs about and is making me hesitate using xmonad as a whole

I think so, haven't tried it myself tho.
will execute given command when clicked with specified buttons. If not specified, button is equal to 1 (left mouse button). Using old syntax (without backticks surrounding command) will result in button attribute being ignored.
