I don't have a doctorate actually. I did a BS+MS combined degree in Math and CS and went to work for a tech company. Got headhunted for my current position.

Is the masters a must? You had work experience in tech, but I don't know if that's because you were working with ML models, rather than being a code construction worker.

We're mostly interested in very smart people with good experience in specific areas (mostly speech recognition, NLP, signal processing computer vision etc). MS/PhD is not a requirement but you have to be a top notch programmer at the very least. Most of my coworkers have one though... Read some of the glassdoor reviews of these companies and you'll have a general idea of the process.
