That's something I don't understand with Americans. My American ex would put money from her bank account to her debit card and do so religiously. She always had to make sure she had money on her debit card. Apparently it's common with Americans

There's nothing particularly wrong with either approach.
Different people are different. If I have cash in my wallet I'll probably spend it, but if I leave it in the bank I'm less likely to go through the trouble of withdrawing it.
It's a way of managing their finances which works for them (or doesn't work if they don't control themselves).
