How to assemble a PC
youtube.com/watch?v=69WFt6_dF8g

Want help?
State budget & CURRENCY
Post at least some attempt at a parts list
List your uses, e.g. Gaming, Video Editing, VM Work
For monitors, include purpose (e.g., photoediting, gaming) and graphics card pairing (if applicable)

CPUs based on current pricing:
Athlon 200GE - HTPC, web browsing, bare minimum gaming
R3 2200G - Light 30-60fps gaming (dGPU optional).
R5 2600 - Good 60fps+ gaming CPU; great value
R5 3600 - midrange; good for all but the absolute highest end GPUs
R7 3700X - High end, higher FPS.
R9 3900X - Gaming+Streaming/Extreme Productivity. Gaming w/ SMT on flunky due to software scheduling issues. See "more"

RAM:
Do not use a single DIMM. 2 sticks ONLY for a typical dual channel CPU
CPUs benefit from fast RAM; 3200CL16 minimum
AMD B & X chipsets and Intel Z chipsets support XMP

GPUs based on current pricing:
1080p
RX 570/580 8GB - Can be found on sale for cheap. Look for 570s which are >1240MHz boost
GTX 1660 - higher fps / more demanding games
RX 5700 - even higher FPS
1440p
RX 5700 - 75-100fps+ in most games
RTX 2080ti - Highest possible FPS, but poor value
2160p (4K)
RTX 2070S OC - budget option. Turing performance scales better into 4K than Navi does.
2080Ti - best for 4K but expensive

Navi launch drivers have issues, esp. w/ OC. Wait for AIB if considering the XT. 5700 blower is alright, due to low power. AIB models come mid-August.

Want to upgrade my 1700 to a 3700x.
Mobo is Asus x370, GPU is 1080ti.

Is it time to nab a cheaper b450? I assume the 1080ti is gonna keep me good until 3000 series cards come out.

So basically with the new AMD tech there is next to no reason to play at actual 4k right? 1800p scaled and sharpened 99 percent as good?

For the most part, it seems that way. It's most certainly a superior upscaler than what we've had in the past, and could help the PS5 achieve 60 FPS in a psuedo-4k resolution.

reshade used was ironically "unsharp", but it still makes the game look sharper than the default TAA x6

BlurRadius=4
BlurOffset=1.000000
BrightClamp=0.500000
DarkClamp=0.495000

Really the fucking irony if using TAA to reduce jaggies and aliasing, then having to use sharpening (and even blur filters) giving you a more clean image.

Why an WD RE drive? I'd reconsider a QLC SSD as your primary (though they work perfectly fine as a bulk storage drive). Consider Corsair MP510 or HP EX920/ADATA SX8200 (not Pro)
650W PSU is a bit overkill. You can run a good 450W or if you don't want to run the fan most of the time, a 550W.

Adrian Hall
Adrian Hall

Cases are subjective but you don't really need to spend $200+ on a case when that money can be better spent on the graphics card to go up to a 2070 Super or 5700XT

Alexander Lee
Alexander Lee

Are you overclocking? If not, remove the CPU cooler.
Get a cheaper X470 board.
If you need 32GB, get a cheaper and faster pair that doesn't have RGB. If not, get an even cheaper and faster set at 3600MHz.
Are you using this build for gaming? If so, ditch the 660p and get a consistent WD Blue 3D M.2 SSD.
Either get a Super card or wait for the RX 5700. OG RTXs are now obsolete.
Get a good Fractal Design case like the Define R6, don't get gaudy Corsair cases.

Liam Hall

I'm overclocking my 3200g integrated gpu and my motherboard doesnt have an option that makes the soc voltage only raise when the igpu is stressed.

Always get EVGA if you can get a card from them that matches MSRP, their coolers are top tier and their warranties are long.

placed old 200mm fan on top blowing down on the motherboard
2 140mm noctua fans blowing at GPU grille on the side
1 old case fan sucking out on the PSU

its so fucking quiet now holy shit

Stop recommedning the 970 to people, buyer's remorse retard.
But yes get a better SSD. You can get a 1TB SX8200 or Inland Premium for only 50% more money.

Isn't the reshade just a copy of AMD's open source algo?
Yeah I don't really see the difference between the last two, except that the texture in the cloth comes out more in the second, but I'd presume that RAS is more performant.

(N)IPPON THUNDER

Seems solid assuming you can update BIOS on the board somehow.
Hard to say the GPUs are good choices without prices. I'd assume the 5700 is a better deal. Plus AMD CPU+GPU seems to perform better.

Is this nigger better than a stock cooler that comes with the 2600? I just tried to OC it. A little to 4GHz but it overheats with this hot summer, so I left it on auto. I got this cooler from an old AM2+/3build, so I don't even think it will be compatible at all, maybe some zip ties can help.

Halfway into the next console generation i'd say.
That 580 is hilariously overpriced though. Get an RX 5700 or a 2060 and you're good for much longer.
Alternatively, get a cheap 580 or even 570 and get a powerful CPU instead. That way you can simply plug a better processor into that thing in a few years and be good again for a long time.

They're worth it if you want cleaner cable management, in that you use no cables, and assuming that you're not spending exorbitantly more money for it.
If they're within literally a couple of dollars of eachother, like an M.2 MX500 for $50 VS 2.5" MX500 for $49, I'd personally say that the M.2 variant would be good if you want less cables running.

Ryan Butler
Ryan Butler

Not sure about that.
This drive is so loud and so slow it’s not worth the effort. It is currently sitting next to 4x 4TB HGST Deskstar NAS drives handling the same exact workload and all remaining silent compared to this one drive.

You can’t even use the seek slider on a movie or song without this thing making more noise than it’s worth. Constant delays when trying to skip in media files or even opening folders via the file explorer.

Only reason I gave this a try was because I assumed the Western Digital would use some Hitachi tech for their Pro line. What a mistake.
The drive currently makes random click / chunk / grind noises throughout the day, usually every 2-3 seconds. They say they can't do another warranty replacement since it currently shows PASS, and point out that the acoustic profile of these models is known to be different than the other hundreds (literally) of WD hard drives that I've worked with. It will sometimes go silent, but the noise kicks back in randomly regardless of idle status.
This hdd makes a lot of noise while it's writing or reading for something. Therefore i dont believe it can survive for long time.
Worst, huge noise after 2 months usage

You'll probably find similar complaints on the Tosh reviews tbf.
I have two of the Toshiba ones and hardly hear them.

I say the power supply since its a literal who manufacturer and you don't want such a power supply. Always get brand ones (Seasonic, bequiet, corsair, ...)
I would change the case also, but only because I think it looks shit and would get me a nice new one.

If you are fine with CPU and GPU i would at least wait another generation. Maybe even 2-3. And upgrade what you think isn't sufficient anymore first (probably your GPU).

Do you really need 2 TB of Hard disk space or are you just adding an HDD because everyone else does? Personally I'd just go for a 1TB or SSD. If you already have an external harddrive then you can just keep your animu and dick pics on that.

Why bother with the be quiet CPU cooler if you're just going to install a noisy blower card. Just use the stock AMD cooler.

Pretty much every recommendation I've seen in this thread has a B450 board instead of a X470/X570. Is there any reason go for a X470/X570?

From my limited research, the main difference between the chipsets are that the X470 supports SLI and the X570 supports PCIe 4.0. Are neither of these things considered significant upgrades? Is it likely that the AM4 socket will become deprecated by the time either of these things will become truly beneficial?

Aaron Morris

Ryzen 3000 shitstomps Skylake-X in most productivity applications, let alone the core i9.
And that's without the 3950X even being out yet.
And in the few cases where it's not the absolute best, it's still by far the best for the money.

3700X would be a big upgrade. Zbrush, Blender, and many others all utilize a lot of cores. I'd really try to get the 3900X if you can.

Uhh isn't it just less pictures in the BIOS? Or a split BIOS?

if your application solely focuses on core frequency e.g. photoshop, the best choice is still the 9900K
if your application isn't, then you would probably favor the Ryzen 3000s because of their multi-core
as the other user said it does in most mainstream applications but I don't know about that user's use case outside of my assumption on adobe premiere, in which case ryzen does indeed outperform intel for the most part

Also regarding 1660ti band:
Vega 56/64 are pretty much exact same price as 1660ti but with better performance and more memory (6GB vs. 8GB)
Similarly RX 590, slighlty lower performance (emphasis on slightly) but more memory (again 6GB vs 8GB) but can be a solid £100 cheaper than the 1660ti

What size (24" is the max people say before the screen is too big), and what's your system specs? And your budget?

Most panels in all brands are the same in the same price/size/resolution/refresh rate combinations, it's not any different in 1080/144/IPS
The trick with IPS panels is you have to play the "IPS panel lottery" because the quality control standards are so shit.
The other thing is what kind of async you want. But at that scale you're better off going freesync over gsync because the premium on gsync is better spent on a higher end GPU that can play 144/1080 very easily.

I can't say there's a point to waiting for 1080. At this stage it seems to be closer and closer to getting grandfathered, and the trend is to make better image panels on larger resolutions, while leaving 1080 144hz to more TN panels than not for maximum reaction times.
1440p is getting new 144hz IPS from LG in August, but I don't know if they'll make a 1080 one with the new IPS technology they're hyping up ("nano IPS").

I want to upgrade to a 3700X in a few weeks, but I have a couple of questions regarding it:

What motherboard and RAM speed/timings (16GB)? I use it primarily for gaming.
Should I buy a better CPU cooler, like the Noctua NH-D15 or be quiet! Dark Rock PRO 4? My logic here is that I could reuse it for future CPU upgrades as well, but maybe I'm falling for the memes.

75hz yes.
LG 24MP59G for instance
haven't seen any 144hz ones

most people wanting 144hz on 1080p prioritise picture speed over quality and go for TN panels
most people wanting IPS picture quality at least somewhat prioritise pciture quality over speed, and part of picture quality is screen size and resolution, so there's more 1440p 27"
the unreliability of the technology also makes it kind of counterintuitive for cost-saving models as would be found on 1080 24" models

It all depends on your budget and patience really, unless you feel you're getting bottlenecked on the 1080 ti by the 6700k (likely not by more than a few frames if at all) I'd say hold off until you can get the 2180 ti and choose your CPU for it at the same time as you get it.
But if you want to upgrade to the 2080ti right now, the 3700x and above are fine upgrades for your CPU to go with it.

There is no point in getting more than an R5 3600 when you're playing in 4k. You'll be heavily GPU bottlenecked.

If you have a 400 series Mobo, ask AMD, they might lend you an Athlon 200GE to flash the BIOS, should you send them proof. Other than that, you'll have to take it to a computer shop for them to flash for (perhaps) a pittance. There might be other techniques, but I don't remember atm.

Jacob Fisher

The 1660 ti is an OKAY card, but it's always best to wait for it to go on sale. Newer cut down Navi cards are going to likely beat in terms of performance to price, but the 1660ti is only recommended if going for say, 144 FPS on 1080p or 60 on 1440p on budget, because both of those needs are better fulfilled by the 5700 at the moment.

GPU usage with all 3 options on the same image would be great. How does unsharp compare to no AA?
With no AA, I imagine there is aliassing and textures already look sharp, so it might be overkill.

Fuck if I know, I just started to test things because AMD is marketing a sharpening filter, so I wanted to see what the free options that existed for years look like.

Isn't the reshade just a copy of AMD's open source algo?
No? I mean reshade, ENB, and other such things have existed for years, with lots of different versions of post processing, including lots of different version of sharpening.
To claim that AMD invented sharpening at that everybody even 5 years ago is using their solution, is silly and ignorant. Which is why people laughed at AMD marketing a sharpening filter, as free versions existed for years and work on all gpus.

Yeah I don't really see the difference between the last two, except that the texture in the cloth comes out more in the second, but I'd presume that RAS is more performant.
Oh there is a difference, one brings out edge detail a bit better, the other one actually increases the contrast between areas which makes things stand out a bit easier and clearer. Both sharpen, but one just sharpens, the other sharpens and adds contrast to everything.
Just open 002 and 003 and click back and forth on them, look at the static background, the cobble stones, the light and so on.

Listen mate, I just told you, reshare, ENB, and the like existed for years, you could do this shit 5 years ago, if not more, I remember back in Resident evil 4 time, using this shit to make the game look a bit better.

Someone ported CAS to reshade.
Okay, and? Does that mean now that reshade, and the tons of post processing options, read OPTIONS, are all suddenly AMDs solution?
Though it's missing the fp16 instrinsics and such. So you can get the exact same thing Navi has, just at not quite the performance.
Yes, you can use AMDs sharpening with reshade if you use that specific sharpening technique.
But the way you put it makes it sound like AMD came up with sharpening, that no such options existed before and that suddenly after stealing AMD solution, everybody now finally for the first time has access to sharpening filters.
Again, sharpening filters and stuff like reshade, ENB existed for years and years.
AMD solution is just another version on top of the pile.
Heck as mentioned before the whole reason I started checking and comparing the sharpening options, is to see if what AMD is offering right now excluisively with their Navi GPUs, is any better than the shit we had for free, for years, on all GPUS.

Even if DLSS pans out to be great, that doesn't mean it's a feature worth sinking moola into now.
I never said it does. I said, only, that the textures on the DLLS version of the tank in that comparrison looks like some kind of bug and textures being low instead of high. As I know how DLLS looks like and how it softens the image, but it doesn't obliterate detail like that, thus I find it weird. Personally DLLS is a meme in my opinion.
RTX is likely the way of the future but I find it boring right now, then again control and cyberpunk might look better with it. And physix being a non meme tier tech, as it does make things look better and is visually very easy to spot and doesn't destroy your performance. Sadly we are moving away from it rather than adopting that kind of tech into every game. Real shame physix didnt become completely mainsteam as I think it gives bigger visual impact than ray tracing for majority of games.

I said both are sharpening filters, both work the same way, only difference is that the algorithm is slightly different.
They are same in the sense that "bloom" in games is the same, but one game might have a different bloom algorithm than the other.
Yet people act like AMD came out with revolutionary idea of "boom" and that it never existed beforehand, when in fact we have tons of different sharpening filters for a very long time.
