redpill me, how did amd manage such a massive jump in cpu speed? Will we keep seeing massive gains like this every new cpu release from now on? Are we back at 90s-2000s levels of progression?

intel just got lazy. 10nm being a failure certainly didn't help though.

Ah yes, synthetic CPU benchmarks! Every AMDrone's favourite and most-used software.

>incels have no synthetic benches to fall back to
Reminder Cinebench, Adobe, PassMark all used to HEAVILY favor intel and now AMD completely crushes Intel.

They just got their shit together

They didn't?
You just haven't been paying attention. They took their threadripper 2nd generation technology and made these Ryzen's from it.
You want to see some real shit?
Threadripper generation 3 is going to spawn a desktop processor that you won't believe.

Wait for cherry picked gaming benchmarks.

I expect 7nm+ to be a smaller jump, probably 5% better IPC and 5% higher clocks, but 5nm in 2021 will be interesting.

>seeing massive gains like this every new cpu release
We can only dream. I read somewhere that, because AMD promised that the ryzen 3000 will be available on AM4, they had to make some compromises.
Which makes me hope for an even greater Zen 3 generation on a new socket better suited for the improved architecture.

>Open a centre in Shanghai
>Get progress

That is it. Just this.
H1B pajeets were a mistake.
muh diversity was a mistake.
muh "I need 500 000 $ a year to not be poor in california" was a mistake.

Zen was a brand new core design and there was plenty of low hanging fruit around to increase perf. Zen had a narrow FPU, so for Zen2 AMD doubled the datapaths and designed it to execute 256bit instructions natively. On the INT side of the core they added another AGU too. The front end had tons of tweaks made to it. Process node allowed for a small uplift in clocks at lower power

Theres clearly still room for improvement on Zen2 as well. The only question is how much of it will materialize in Zen3 given how little 7nm+ offers over current non EUV 7nm. For the foreseeable future at least AMD will be delivering solid performance uplifts with each new generation.
5nm Zen4 should be a fucking huge departure from current Zen2. TSMC's 5nm allows for massively higher xtor density, higher clocks, and substantial reductions in power.

red company bad

7nm+ is still AM4, 5nm will be AM5

>Are we back at 90s-2000s levels of progression because AMD caught up with Intel after 3 years?

I can't tell if you're a shill or just a zoomer, but in no ways is this comparable to the era where computers would be borderline unusable after a few years because of technology advancing.

These.
Zen has plenty of room for improvement and they have a fantastic platform for experimentation in the Threadripper, then they take what they've learned and apply it to the smaller architecture.

Chinese collusion.
*inhales deeply*

THE SHIT FOUND ON AMD'S ZEN CHIPS WILL MAKE SPECTRE, MELTDOWN, AND ZOMBIELOAD LOOK LIKE BABY SHIT. THE RED TEAM IS RED THROUGH AND THROUGH AFTER "MOMMY SU" TOOK THE LEAD.

When she took the helm, AMD was almost bankrupt and within months had hundreds of millions in cash from the chicoms through a rather dubious complicated deal. Lisa Su is not an innocent player in this mess and not to be trusted just because she is from Taiwan.
>inb4 intel shill
Fuck them both.

"AMD will use AM4 until 2020" could also mean they will use a different socket next year

incel shill

Bruh. Taiwan folks hate mainlanders.

for

For hating mainlanders they sure do a hell of a lot of business with them.

fuck (((them)))

Faaake

528 st is like 5.1 ghz 9900k

3900x is more like a 4.9 ghz 9900k

Seems unlikely. It's just going to be a + revision of the current chips next year, so there's zero reason for a new socket. I'd expect AM5 without a doubt in 2021 though

Milan is already confirmed to use DDR4 meaning there's a better chance Ryzen 4000 will still be on AM4.

It's because of IPC.

That french guy is still funny.
He believes that he knows better than AMD how to use Zen 2 architecture "right".

didn't knew that, makes sense then

Just like anyone else in the world you mongoloid.

This. Comparing AMD to itself when they went BACKWARDS with Faildozer will give you a false perspective.
Progress has been slowing down. With Faildozer AMD regressed to being worse than Core2 performance and they've had Intel to crib off of to get back on track so here we are.
If you're expecting AMD's progressing from no longer making chips with 2006 level IPC to mean we're back to the good old days of +20% performance a year... I think you're probably going to be disappointed.

You fucking piece shit, faildozer as you refer to it has matched sandy bridge before mitigations. And improves old guard while Intel old guard rots away.

So which 8/16 would be best for VM pc build? Performance vs cost?

Redpills cause catastrophic brain damage.

I'm just waiting for that sweet, sweet Zen 2+ (or Zen 3, whatever it's called). For now, I'm upgrading to the 5700 XT from a RX 580.

You're absolutely fucking delusional if you think that Bulldozer even came close to Sandy Bridge in terms of IPC. They were outright worse than the Phenom II chips clock for clock, and those were about on par with Core 2.

Funny how Intel fanboys heavily shilled synthetic benchmarks until AMD started pulling ahead.

>I must defend a multi-billion dollar corporation!
I would understand if they were actually paying you, but doing it for free is just pathetic.

Because Bulldozer and Piledriver were turds and it's not hard to beat a turd
>t. former FX-4100 owner

>I would understand if they were actually paying you, but doing it for free is just pathetic.
Intel fanboys are the most pathetic people on the internet.

>Are we back at 90s-2000s

No, Moore's Law is dead.

Whatever you can afford. All the Zen 2 CPUs are pretty good, but the higher end chips are just enthusiast tier (like always).

>Are we back at 90s-2000s levels of progression?
Sorry but no - only real progress will be in number of cores. As for Zen 1, the bar was set very low with Bulldozer, so it wasn't difficult for AMD to make a better architecture with enough time.
And yet, Zen/Zen+ were still behind intel in terms of IPC and AMD has only caught up now with Zen 2 (winning in some cases, losing in some cases so on average it's roughly the same). Can they keep going with improvements at this rate? I'm afraid it's unlikely, given how miniscule intel's improvements were every generation.

>All the Zen 2 CPUs are pretty good
Based quads of truth saving the day again.

Thanks! Fuck red or blue I'm loyal to my green. On the high end they both seem pretty close in price and performance especially once motherboards and discrete cards are factored in.

based comrade

in csgo AMD has 5 fps less at 1024*768

wtf are you talking about?

Best CPU on passmark has 50% better singlethreaded performance than a i5 2500k from a decade ago.

That's absolutely abysmal.

At one point, CPU singlethreaded performance would double every 18 months, e.g. in 9 months would acheive what the last decade has.

Pic related is pretty good desu and with the price cuts, you could probably squeeze the 8 core for the same price soon.

I'll get zen2 in a couple years. I never adopt tech early. OMG ZEN2 release was such a let down!! Every fucking release is bad. Other option is to get a 200ge and use it as a boot kit for a 3xxx series.

Ipc is a different thing from single threaded performance. Try running an i9 9900 at 4.3ghz and compare it to zen 2. Intel cpu are slowly starting to become like bulldozer, where they need crazy high frequencies and power consumption to match AMD

newegg has 2700 for $150 right now with their flash sale.

Also 3600 > 2700. There's like ~10-15% increase in gaming performance with just 3600.

Mercury is retrograde. It is not a good time to purchase anything electronic unless absolutely necessary.

both intel and amd can still improve single thread performance a lot. the zen 2 improvements in ipc are(probably) mostly due to their new branch predictor and it's not even based on cutting edge tech.

It's actually funny. Intel has discounted the higher end processors for the first time since forever, meaning Coffee Lake i3 and i5 buyers can now upgrade to eg. 9700k for a reasonable price, all thanks to AMD's comeback. I don't think Intel fanboys should have any reason to be mad about anything.

>reasonable price
>$350-$400 for 8 core with hyperthread disabled
KEK

oh no no no!

Speak more about these magical stars, you cosmic sorceror.

This is what bothers me the most.
If I upgrade from 2500K to 3700X, single core performance improvement will be less than 50%.
Since 2500K is at 4,5Ghz, way lass than 50%.

Up until this year I didn't even realize how bad progress was. Anyone who upgraded from Sandy/Ivy bridge during the past 8 years is an idiot.

>all these benchmarks
>no my fps graph

Is Zen just better IPC-wise because Intel have to apply security mitigations that AMD don't?

Going from a 4690K to 3900X within the week, it's going to feel like a whole new world

Attached: 1523163189121.gif (400x225, 2.64M)

Yeah it's fucking hilarious there's people on here who have bought every latest Ryzen release or switched from i5-6xxx to 8xxx and such. We make fun of idiots who sell their iPhones to get the newer S version but apparently those nerds are allowed to post here.

When will PCI Express 4 become relevant for video cards? Debating whether or not I should buy an x570 motherboard or an x470 one that draws less power and doesn't have a little fan and I probably won't upgrade my motherboard/cpu again for 5+ years.

Opening zip files will probably be faster but you'll hardly notice it I'm afraid.

>I must defend a multi-billion dollar corporation!
I would understand if they were actually paying you, but doing it for free is just pathetic.

Silly jewtel shill, we all know AMD is just some little garage operation from the little man

>how did amd manage such a massive jump in cpu speed?
12mn to 7mn
improved branch predictor
better instruction pre-fetching
giant fucking caches
from DDR4/2667 to DDR4/3600
PCI4 but that doesn't matter (yet) but AMD got there first.

3900X is eating Intel's lunch. Hell the whole 3000 line is. And soon AMD will release the 3950X to bomb Intel from low-earth orbit

16 core 32 thread
4.7GHz boost clock ON AIR COOLING.
8MB L2 and 64 MB L3 cache
All that @ 105watts.

Even if you love Intel you should be stoked because Intel needs to get off their ass and put out this fire. They've been on cruise control for too many years. And with this, more companies have more incentive to create software that effectively utilizes more cores.

>Bruh. Taiwan folks hate mainlanders.
Yeah Taiwan and China are enemies that both claim to be the "real" government for both. Although I don't get what that has to so with this thread.

Why would I bother to make an entire argument to refuse your unsupported assertions?

Why should I put in 100x the effort into my response compared to your nonsense?

Nope. Put in some effort and make an argument yourself, and I'll argue back. Til then accurately referring to you as a retard is more than sufficient.

the real reason is ton's of cache, AMD took the blunt hammer approach.
while i have no horse in this race. Intel managed to get the same performance give or take, on double the node size, with much less cache 5 years ago. let's not forget that.
AMD design suffers from high latencies, on different ccx's due the modular design.
honestly, it is not that impressive, those are relatively, simple design tweaks
