I'm building a web application at work which is supposed to give a dynamic graphical overview of all the processes within our local government institutions and how they're connected. Turns out it's is growing to be quite a lot of data as there's a constant demand for more details.
At first everything ran fine on the standard machines there, but right now I've had to force them to use chrome to have at least some form of decent performance (their standard is still IE11, sigh). I don't want to have to optimize the front end, as that's all wasted time, but I fear I'll soon have to.
There's no problem on my reasonably powerful home machine. I don't often need the power, but it's there for the few times I do, and that's pretty nice.

Music production needs heavy usage of cpu, anf some gpu for encoding (i guess).
image manipulation and painting is heavy, there are many heavy calculations behind the process. Effects and such can be pretty heavy too

Depends on what you mean by "powerful PC." Going above $1200 or so is generally completely pointless for anything other than gaming and certain highly specialized CAD, video editing work. But a $1000 is extremely useful for a huge array of hobbies and professions.
