Used Mining GPUs

What is Jow Forums's opinion on used mining GPUs? Is the risk worth the low price?

I'd wait for new navi shit but don't they downclock them anyways?

I think a lot of miners do undervolt their cards, yeah. Seems like the fans would be the first things to wear out.

>Is the risk worth the low price?
Don't know what risk, as it's not like you can really confirm if the card has been used for mining or not. The seller can just reflash the BIOS and you and everyone else would be none the wiser.

As long as they're cheap enough.

I actually bought a Nitro + RX 570 recently for dirt cheap and had to reflash the BIOS. It's not that simple, but it wasn't the hardest thing in the world or anything either. I'm hoping the card will last for a long time in my video editing rig.

There's nothing wrong with mining cards. If anything they'll be in better condition than a used consumer card, as they will have less thermal load/unload cycles and probably haven't been operating in a dusty, humid shithole environment

what risk? less thermal cycles and less fan ramp cycles
is there even data that points to there being any increased risk?

Don't buy its not worth it.

I got a 580 ex miner card, repasted with nh1 noctua past. Been good as for a year now.

Used mining GPUs are safer to buy than gaming GPUs because they usually don't ever run at 100% power and don't oscillate in power drawn.

They usually flash them to use lower voltages, lower boost clocks, and fans at 50%. Worst case scenario, the fans may be a bit fucked, but even then mining isn't any more stressing for the GPU than gaymen for 3 hours a day and alt tabbing every once in a while and so on

based on what logic?

$90 isn't a risk, it's lunch.

I'm currently using a rx580 i got about a month ago for $100. The seller had already sold like 50 of the same so i figure it was pounded pretty hard over it's life.
It's not perfect and has some glitches under extreme load if i don't keep it cool with higher fan settings (hopefully this is only a summer problem), but if i do it preforms flawlessly.

Only time will tell if it was worth it or not. For the price i'd be happy with 1-2 years of very moderate gaming.

What risk?

Stop kvetching and buy rtx.

This can also be a driver problem and applying new thermal paste can't hurt either especially during summer.

I don't see why they wouldn't work. Miners are trying to make a buck, and doing retarded shit with the cards that puts them out hundreds of dollars isn't economcially viable.

Having said that, I personally wouldn't bother. For instance, 116 dollars for an RX570? Those cost 150 new. When the difference is only a little like that, I wouldn't bother personally.

Not sure if load/unload cycles or constant load is worse for longevity, but one thing that helps tremendously is disassembling the cooler and lubing the fan bearings with a drop of oil. The fans tend to be the first thing to wear out on ex-miners

I still daily use GPU I mined BTC with in 2011 (non-stop for months)

Would you date an escort who had to quit because all her holes are loose?

It just werks.

My wife got a rx 590 for $100 a few months ago for a budget build. I just changed thermal paste and pads on it and it's had no issues at all.

t. bitcoin miner

Only if they're cheap as fuck and get ready to switch the fans.
Those suffer and fail the most in these mining cards.
If it isn't easy to replace the fans then don't even consider getting one of those cards.

Got 2x gigabyte 1080ti gaming from a miner. The fans were a little noisy, but I fixed them in 30 minutes with a little lubricant. Otherwise, the cards were fine and dirt cheap.

Buying used mining cards is cucked as fuck. That's like getting to lick your wife's pussy after Chad came in it.

Comparing women to consumer goods, in a pathetic attempt at promoting consumerism.
Gee... I wonder who could be behind this post.

>Comparing women to consumer goods
There's unironically no difference nowadays.
You seemed to have misinterpret my statement, not accepting someone else's used goods is not the same as promoting consumerism.

Why do you need a gpu for cryptocurrency mining? What does the graphics card have to do with it?

>people = goods
Yeah, great analogy and related to graphic cards...

I bought a watercooled 1080 that was "lightly used" for mining. Been using it since Dec 2017. It's basically just a reference board msi slapped a cooler on, so it performs like a reference card would. So not particularly amazing about it, but nothing bad either.

They don't sell them because they are "getting slower" rather that mining is not worth the cost anymore.

I wouldn't buy any used cards without warranty. Especially if they were heavily used in mining (24/7 usage). Graphic cards can break at any moment same with HDDs. I had seven of them break over the last few years. I had a 390X that MSI send me as a replacement that had artifacts within 30 minutes and then gave me a black screen.

I purchased a few for SFF builds. They holdup extremely well. Considering that they aren't going in my main rig, but in a small mobile setup, and that they cost so little, it's honestly a great deal.

Get your fucking goddamn shitty cryptoshit out of here, child.

LMAO. GPUs are basically just millions of transistors stacked, they never break.
What can break are the resistors and they can be either soldered back on manually and only break when the card is cooled/heated too quickly too many times.
