any anons here use macbooks/mojave? can you please share some of your experiences, pros & cons of using it vs linux. I'm close to giving up on finding a good thin and light windows-based laptop.
>xps 13 has coil whine, overheating issues with basic tasks
>surface laptop 2 has FUCKING FABRIC and abysmal IO even by the standards of this form factor
>huawei matebook / pro have overheating issues and I'll neck myself before I use optimus on linux again
>thinkpad x1 carbon gen 7 is the last decent option but the good displays aren't available here yet
my use case is personal + work, frequent travel with just a suitcase or small bag. just need it for writing, conferencing, meetings, films, ssh'ing to my home stuff and learning programming (hobby). thanks anons

I use a 2018 mbp with mojave. Perfect laptop except some retard thought it would be a good idea to replace the escape, function, and delete keys with with that shitty gimmicky touchbar. Also been using it over a year with no keyboard failures, but maybe I'm lucky.

Thinkpad shit hinge shit display. Get a 2015 macbook or deal with the shitty surface laptop 2 io and hinge.

yeah I do not like the touchbar but my options are really running thin. have you ever dual booted linux? apparently it works well with the previous models but I assume the touchbar would be useless so volume etc would be manual change

Macs are completely unusable shitheaps.
Every single model has some major defect.

literally any laptop on the market will have as many if not more issues found online. the soldered storage and thunderbolt ports are legitimate design flaws, the keyboard is now covered for the lifetime of the product which may be shit but at least its a free fix.

Your bias shows. Buy macbook and get assraped then if you really want it that much

Pretty sure the newer Macbooks are incompatible with any OS that isn't macOS and Windows due to the T2 chip.

>Pretty sure the newer Macbooks are incompatible with any OS that isn't macOS and Windows due to the T2 chip.
Tell GNU users to write a driver already, then.

I have a retina Macbook Air. On basic tasks it is room temperature to handwarm. With thunderbolt 3/USB-C you can use an eGPU for more demanding tasks. I like how on normal use I only have to charge it once every couple days, maybe twice a day if I have to sit down and work on it all day, the battery life is just magnificent. The display is superb, contrasty and somehow they came up with a coating that reduces reflections in daytime. It literally hurts my eyes to look at an FHD display now, not to mention my old laptops 1366x768 shittery. The sound is great as well. The touchpad is clickable and large, the gestures and tracking is seamless, actually nicer to use it than a mouse. The keyboard is nothing fancy, but still nicer to use than my old laptops mushy buttons. Button travel is almost none but gives a nice tactile feedback, something basic latop keyboards never do.
All in all it is a very nice laptop to work on.

So many other products have random issues. Macbooks feel like the first computers I've used just without random issues coming up. It's fine to pay extra for quality.

>just write a driver for a proprietary encryption device
>literally all other laptops have such shitty design the CEO had to issue a public apology

It is funny how chinks get so violent when someone mentions Apple or Macs

Since it sounds like you have a job, a life, and use a computer as a means rather than an end in itself, by all means buy a new MacBook. I have a MacBook Pro 2017 (no touchbar) with Mojave, treated it like shit with constant traveling and I’ve suffered no failures in the 2 years I’ve had it. You can more or less do anything you can do on linux except rice your desktop. Homebrew is a decent package manager though don’t expect the freedom of pacman’s AUR of course, still you can always compile from source as you do on linux. Plus you have the benefit of a machine with a warranty and servicing options that can run industry-standard software.

I would agree that if the latter isn’t worth much to you and you prefer to fix thing’s yourself then it’s not worth it - and even then it’s probably not worth full price. I got mine on a student discount.

buy used t480s or go ahead and waste money on trashbook

>>just write a driver for a proprietary encryption device
Do you really think the encryption method is the obstacle? You sound as stupid as a Windows user.

see

Shill harder, winjeet.

Can someone advise me on package managers on OSX? Everyone seems to use brew but I'm interested in macports

Attached: 1538317889845.png (400x1650, 367K)

Some of these are not as common as you think
>t. 2009 MBP and 2012 retina owner, both still running

macports is old and forgotten, homebrew is where the attention is. Unless there's a strong reason to use macports, I wouldn't default to it.

Why isn't Windows there for /v/?

>muh shills
take your meds. why don't you explain away the glaring issues of other available laptops in the OP

...

my macbook air 2013 still works like a dream for light tasks. looking to upgrade it when they release a new laptop without the butterfly switches.

Get a Xiaomi laptop

...

From what I've read macports is supposed to be safer because brew, by design, needs you to change permissions to /usr/local so you don't have to use root
Brew is more popular these days though because of its ease of use and less risk of fucking things up. Since it only installs to /usr/local/ (a directory left empty in macOS) it won't overwrite system binaries, whereas macports might if you don't know what you're doing.
I've never used macports though so have no idea how good it still is.

whiter than you, mohammed

applehelpwriter.com/2018/03/21/how-homebrew-invites-users-to-get-pwned/

I quite like tinkering and have used BSD ports before so the old-school pitch from macports is quite appealing

Attached: 1561534858250.jpg (960x1280, 177K)

Yeah I'd say try it out. I suspect it might be the better software. Now I've also read online that newer packages are less likely to be in macports than homebrew but I'm not sure how true that is.

Clean your shit, you disgusting rat.

Clean your shit, you disgusting, naked brown rat.
Better?

in no way apple is related to india, on the other hand android

Wrong board, try posting here:

Xiaomi notebook pro user. Comes with chink windows which needs to be replaced anyways, standard hardware, cheap price, heavily apple inspired hardware that's actually built nicely, good IO, USB C charging, god-tier battery life, discreet GPU and has an open M2 port to expand storage.
You can't go wrong.
Macbooks are nice, except they run macos which is disastrously shit. Windows is better.
Also their hardware suffers massively due to design. Latest models thermal throttle like crazy, my work 2015 macbook hits 90c consistently while I'm doing front end shit.
Get the xiaomi notebook pro or air, both are god tier laptops and massively underappreciated.

Hi, winjeet.

Windows isn't better than macOS. Fuck off.

dilate

It actually is. macos is one of the worst OSes on the market right now.

>LOOK MUM I REPLIED TO EVERYONE AGAIN AREN'T I SO FUNNY?!!!1!!1!!! XDDddDDdDD
Get your faggot ass over to those boards and get to dilating you seething poorfag. You can't even buy a fucking used thinkpad and you come over here to shit on TECHNOLOGY DISCUSSION with your meta joke shit.

Nope. It's much, much better than Windows.

Attached: healthy cereal.jpg (200x294, 21K)

Enjoy your non-Unix crap, pajeet.

Explain how it's better then.
It's unironically worse. Slower, spotlight gets worse with each update, window management is garbage, file system is still a joke, features are stagnant, becomes more and more like ios with each update, every fucking app to make it better costs more
What's actually better about it? terminal? That's gonna be another thing off the list it doesn't have after Windows Terminal actually releases.

I used a 2017 MacBook Pro for almost 2 years, recently got it switched for the X1 carbon. Most of my complaints were with OSX over linux, but a couple apply to the hardware.
>The throttling is insane, even for a basic workload, and anything like Google Hangouts starts to make the whole system choke
>The glossy screen was nice to begin with, but I work in an office on the 10th floor and I'm sick of closing the blinds
>2 USB C inputs made it pretty shit for portabilitity, I sometimes want to work abroad and I like to use my own mouse/kb (because that mbp keyboard is dreadful), but I then need to slug this (£70) dock around with me everywhere
>god that fucking keyboard
>the noise during high load is disgusting
>the heat during high load is disgusting
>actually weighs more than the X1

Mainly OSX is dogshit though
I don't like having 3 versions of find installed.

OK you do realize that quit being funny like 9 years ago?

It's Unix, doesn't have constant lib issues like wangblows, doesn't use NTFS which is the worst FS in the world, faster than Windows, better window management, looks better, better customisation, better graphics apis, more features.

>better window management

Attached: thefuck.png (500x378, 169K)

Yep, Amethyst.

Yikes - the post.

1 rupee has been deposited, sir.

okay, this is epic

>It's Unix
Sure but it's also fucking BSD
>Doesn't have constant lib issues
Like what? Sounds like you don't know how to use the simplest OS around
>faster than WIndows
At what? If you're using a mbp it's throttling anything it does anyway.
>Better window management
Oh it's a bait post
>Looks better, better customisation
Opinions and falsehood
>More features
Yeah real good feature you can cast your screen to a bulky overpriced tv box
Not sure what else it has

t. never written a program in his life

your comment about glossy screen tells that you got x1c with matte screen, meaning fhd. So, how is it switching from a great screen to lenovo's fhd worst panel in the industry?

I'm a software engineer at Apple

t. actually never written a program in his life.

xD

Good one.

So a third party WM. That's no different than any other OS.

I like it. I don't need anything more than FHD at 13". It'd be nice but it's been a better experience than the MBP for a display. If this is the worst panel they have then they must have pretty good panels.

Every release past Lion have been dumpster fires.

Snowlep forever.

>third party
Welcome to the world of free software, winnigger.

Genuinely not even joking.

x1c is 14'. And you saying that you like acer tier chink fhd panels with no brightness more than apple's retina displays makes me think that you a larper. Lenovo's fhd panels are objectively some of the worst panels in the market.

Why on earth would a programmer prefer MacOS when Linux exists, and doesn't require you to buy an overpriced ThrottleBook.

...

Because it has professional support and you don't have to pay for it. Fucking child.

why would a professional prefer an os full of headaches with complete lack of the most basic software over a user friendly os that allows him to focus on his actual job and do things efficiently, as well as provides easy access to all the software he might need. As for money - professionals rarely buy their laptops and if they do, there is nothing wrong with paying more for your main work tool

>professional support that tells you to buy a new device

seething

xD

>free software
>mac
ah ok troll. Thanks for the laughs then

Real free software, not restrictive GPL crap like GNU.

At $2k for a standard MBP, the privilege to have the "genius" at the Apple store tell you to buy a new machine is pathetic.

Well no shit, if my company gives me a laptop I'm going to use that. OP is buying something with his own money.
Modern Linux distros come polished out of the box, loaded with development tools, and if you're a developer I sure hope you can type "apt install". The only software not available on Linux is Adobe shit or MS office.

>he's still going on
there's no free software on mac.

Attached: Jim laugh.jpg (419x393, 42K)

while talentless cheap faggots argue daily about mac os, talented people get shit done with macbooks. Like the team that got pictures of the black hole.

GPLv3 isn't free software, retard.
>At $2k for a standard MBP, the privilege to have the "genius" at the Apple store tell you to buy a new machine is pathetic.
t. non-enterprise "user"

My Dell Inspiron is robust and has been running like a champ for 2 years now and I put it through its paces with muh games. I'm putting some nice upgrades in it next month. Macs are shit tier computers.

Okay, now this is epic

Wow, a gamer who knows nothing of computers bitching about Macs. BASED!

>Like the team that got pictures of the black hole.
Making a porn doesn't require talent.

>Mac
>Quality

these

I LOVE anime xD apple btfo

>why would a professional prefer an os full of headaches with complete lack of the most basic software over a user friendly os that allows him to focus on his actual job and do things efficiently, as well as provides easy access to all the software he might need.
But that's what I'm saying, I prefer using Linux.

>Seething Mac Fag
My gaming laptop was a better deal and better value than anything Apple has to offer. I game and watch shit online. Apple only offers one of those things for way more money. You have to be retarded to buy a brand new Mac. Have fun sending in your fancy Mac for repairs every other month.

No one cares, wintoddler. Go play with a toy.

Oh, so you have to buy the enterprise support package to get halfway decent support.
Lenovo, for example, will express ship you replacement parts (or ship your laptop if required) and get you in touch with actual trained support techs, just on a standard thinkpad purchase.

>I overpaid for a Mac because I'm a REAL PROFESSIONAL who does REAL WORK you just wouldn't understand OK??

>my use case is personal + work, frequent travel with just a suitcase or small bag.
if you do a lot of document manipulation, macos is golden because it has very good pdf tools out of the box, traveling be sure you protect it though. The case is tough but your screen will easily get scratches from bending down to the keyboard when you pack your bag too tight
>just need it for writing, conferencing, meetings, films, ssh'ing to my home stuff and learning programming (hobby).
ive been using it for writing a lot, i like it. good console for basic things, i manage my website and email server with it.
