Hear me out, this sounds stupid I know, that's why I am here.
I moved to a new place and won't get my internet unlocked until october, so I'm using the shitty wifi hotspot that is located in a store 50 meters away. Reception is BAD but its good enough for youtube and shitposting.

The USB wlan stick is attached to a 2 meter usb cable plugged into a USB 3.0 port. The stick itself dangles in the air in the middle of the room, cuz for some reason that is the best reception I get. Window is even worse.

Anyway. I usually get 1-2 mbit/s if nothing is happening to the cable.
Now if I get the near the cable, with body or hands, the rate goes up to 5mbit/s for some fucking reason.
I don't know why, I tried to hold my hands near the USB stick which made the bit rate even worse. But holding my hands near the cable (just holding, not even touching) boosts the bit rate like I'm a human wifi conduit.

What the fuck is happening here?

Got a trial of ExpressVPN while living abroad. Trying to access TV stream providers like YouTube TV but YouTube TV detects the VPN.

I don't know. I remember an episode of Top Gear where they found the range of their car key fobs increased when they held the fob next to their heads when pressing the unlock button.
But if you want better reception and don't want to stand right under that point, you can point a satellite dish at the store and attach the wlan stick to the focal point where the arm thingy ends.

I keep getting lag spikes constantly when connected through wifi and even when through the ethernet cable.

You can remove the stock heat sink and fan and buy a raijintech morpheus 2 (or something) and slap on a few case fans. I don't know, you might be able to find a fan replacement too.

What's the consensus on refurbished laptops? I mean my last laptop was a refurbished one that had 0 issues and it lasted me 4 years. I need to get another one now, and refurbished laptops seem to be a great value. Anyone have any more insight?

More specifically, chrome settings are set to allow cookies and they are saved from all sites except Jow Forums apparently. But there are no exceptions or block or anything for Jow Forums. This happened after clearing my cache and cookies on chrome

Looks more like your password and email were leaked from some website and they're BSing you. There's nothing on your computer and if there is it's unrelated to that email.

Welcome to modern scamming, scammers now use passwords from pwned websites to scare people, its normal.
There are other methods like spoofing the sender and using the receiver email as the sender which scares a huge amount of people.

Look on haveibeenpwned to see if your passwords are on there. Most likely this is just a mass spam with data taken from a data dump.

Recently built a pc after getting some things with Prime Day. I have just about everything setup correctly, but there's one main issue I can't figure out - text color is weird for some letters. It's not all text, but it is a lot, including what I am typing right now (white background). Any idea what I can do to fix it? pic related. Does this look normal to everyone else? Using the tv that I did with my old pc that had no problems. If I screenshot it, it looks fine. My new monitor also looks fine. I posted this in /pcbg/ first but then remembered this thread. No programs lately, latest thing I installed was I updated to 1903 which is when it shows this new version of cvtres.exe was created. It's usage has dropped down to 67mb now, After I closed some file folders and images. A better question now is why does it say I'm using 54% of my ram when that obviously does not add up from the running processes i can see? I have 32gb, is it a page file or something?

It's not the native resolution, I'm downscaling from 4k to 1080p (which is what I did with the old pc). I disabled ClearType and it improved, but still not perfect. In fact, some text looks "skinny".

That seemed to fix it for now, gonna have to watch it and see what is causing the pool buildup.

Do RTS games use a ton of RAM? I ran some app on my 16gb desktop that showed Company of Heroes taking ~4gb at peak load, it lagged when there was lots of units and stuff going on my screen. But then I tested it with 8gb, same peak load but it was lagging a lot more. wtf is this

I'm trying to extract all frames from a video and ffmpeg doesn't do it. Its dropping ~1800 frames out of 40K or so frames (25 minute video)

Its fucking annoying when I'm trying to upscale a video using waifu2x and the audio is out of sync due to missing frames. The frame drop isn't due to "duplicate" either. I've tried it multiple times and duplicates are usually 1-2 frames while the majority are simply dropped for no reason.

How do I fix this?

Game genre doesn't affect RAM usage, it all depends in who makes the games and how much they care about efficiency.
Some simple games might use a huge amount of ram (Anything made in unity or FO4 for example) because the code sucks and its bloated or made by indians.

FPS depend in your CPU and GPU, not exactly RAM.
Download speccy and post a screenshot of it.

Found out it might be the video issue, or rather variable frame rate issue with ffmpeg. Trying to get ffmpeg to dump all the frames with vsync 0 fails to convert.

Well atleast I know I need to find a different video source.
