Thorium molten salt reactor being built in Indonesia

reuters.com/article/us-indonesia-nuclearpower/pal-indonesia-thorcon-sign-deal-to-build-12-billion-nuclear-reactor-idUSKCN1UD0D0

It's an American design from Oak Ridge National Laboratory that's now being marketed by a spin-off startup called Thorcon. It's being built by a partnership between Thorcon and PAL, an Indonesian defense contractor. The first reactor is being built in Indonesia despite the fact that the design was developed using American federal government grants as none of the American utility companies were interested.

so?

everyone can copy designs and ideas, that's why the patent system exist you fucking moron.

Building a reactor in a country made entirely of volcanoes and earthquakes. What could go wrong?
We live next door and this is a real worry.

They're building it on a huge floating platform built in South Korea that will be hauled to Indonesia.

Attached: Thorcon1.png (863x486, 675K)

fyi

So what you're saying is that we're giving Indonesia a nuclear powered "huge floating platform" that definitely cannot be converted to an aircraft carrier, we promise

Also means playing a GTA Heist of a nuclear powered "huge floating platform" is a viable mission.

Just imagine the headlines if that happened.

I doubt molten salt reactors have the vibration resilience required for use on moving ships.

How have they solved the pipe degradation problem? Containing molten salts at a bajillion degrees is doable but when you start adding in radiation making all sorts of crazy compounds and nasty isotopes it just fucks the pipes which was the main problem with Thorium reactors.

>500 megawatt
>floating
>$1.2 billion
>molten salt reactor
>no specified date whatsoever
Doubt, but good luck.

The Indons don't need a carrier. They effectively live on one.
All their potential enemies are within the range of their fighters.
We had a standoff with them during their Konfrontasi period.
They could have given us a day's notice and we still couldn't have stopped them.

Thorium reactors are 10x less volatile than traditional reactors. If something goes wrong the fissile elements become inert and doesn't go on a dangerous runaway chain reaction like chernobyl or fukushima.

>first model
>expensive
Yeah who knew building the first one is gonna cost quite a bit. If they can get it working there is potential for reducing the cost and end up with a cheap, clean, movable energy provider.
The savings from being able to build them in one spot and move them would be massive compared to traditional nuclear plants.

Who the fuck cares, jungle nigger. Thorium reactors suck and that's why it never got popular.
The future is VHTR.

Conventional 1,5000 megawatt reactors cost $8B+ to build in first world countries with actual regulations and inspectors and shit (i.e. not China or Russia). Just $1.2 billion for the first reactor of its kind generating 500 megawatt seems way too optimistic.

>expensive
You got it wrong! $1.2 billion won't be nearly enough. It's a super ambitious project.

thought this was a picture of a motherboard I/O lol

>molten salt

How corrosive is that? Unrelated field I suppose but they had to make special accommodations for the liquid oxygen carrying plumbing for the SSME and special "frictionless" components due to how corrosiveiquid oxygen is.

Have thorium shills even considered this? Hell I lived near a prototype liquid salt reactor and it had to control meltdown and spray irradiated waste all over the valley so clearly there was something wrong with it.

The actual salt is able to be contained, even in it's molten state, more or less indefinitely using the right piping. The problem is when you introduce the fuel, it produces all sorts of crazy shit that fucks the pipes up. If this is solved then LFTR is 100% go, until then the only use for molten salts is in fusion reactors such as SPARC which are the real deal for positive Q reactors. Pic related is starting construction soon. It's pretty exciting.

But why Indonesia?

Nobody else was interested in being the beta tester.

Wtf are you talking about. Malaisia was backed by the UK and USA. Konfrontasi didnt work out well for indo esia

or the nuclear reactor in the UK that the Chinese are building ;)

Corrupt officials that were bribed to buy the design

Hinkley Point C is being built by the French. It's partially financed by the Chinese in exchange for the U.K. regulator prioritizing safety review of a Chinese-designed reactor.

With the state of this board, I'd go to any thread that isn't semiconductor shitposting. Solar for households as independent power source with storage and nuclear for the grid should keep us up for the next 100 years easily until we figure out fusion.

> as none of the American utility companies were interested
More like the Dept. of Energy doesn't approve of LFTR because it doesn't produce weaponizeable byproducts. Also, it threatens Westinghouse and General Electric's uranium pellet business model.

Why did they give out millions after millions in research grants to Oak Ridge to develop this thing then?

The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. The US government is huge, user.

Nah I'm Indonesian and I'm doubtful this will really works.

>Millions

Literally pocket change, call me back when they invest at least a few billion, after all they seem to manage to give 38 billion dollars to Israel no problem.

>floating platform reactor
So what do these thorium salts taste again? Just for the time it sinks and all the fish will get salted.

I'd be more concerned about the possibility of someone just stealing the reactor. Chinese navy?

>Chinese navy
The Chinese could just build them if they wanted to. No need to spark an international incident just to get one.

This.

fukishima didn't go "runaway" you dumb nigger, the problem there was residual heat that was not being taken away, the reactions stopped immediately.

>Fukushima
It's more to Nips incompetent by putting backup generator in the underground because they're very confident that their sea walls is unbreachable and 8.0+ magnitude earthquake will never happens.

>Building a reactor in a country made entirely of volcanoes and earthquakes. What could go wrong?

Indonesia doesn't seem to care much about loss. They are already one of the biggest dumpers of trash into the ocean. Much of that plastic trash in the Pacific Ocean is from there. Indonesian rivers are packed with floating trash as it washes down to the sea. Currents then drag all that trash out into the open Pacific swirl.

China is much the same way. China even plans to build floating nuclear reactors to power each of their fortress islands they created. Those reactors were going to be floating a distance away from their fortress islands so if they get bombed, all the pollution will wash away from the fortress. And of course, the pollution will be blamed upon the world's policeman.

Why put reactors on land where it pollutes your country? Find places where ocean currents carry the pollution away from your shores. Put it on an offshore rig like Deepwater Horizon. If the reactor gets a meltdown, no problem. The radiation will drift clockwise due to coriolis and poison alaska and usa coast fishing. Let those countries eat the cancer causing fish.

China Building Floating Nuclear Power Plants
rt.com/business/377324-china-floating-nuclear-reactor/

Building nuclear reactors on your soil is old school. The new school of practical asian thinking is "Let the ocean wash your sins away".

Attached: Chinese_fish_farms_use_polluted_river_water.jpg (1675x859, 185K)

You have no idea what youre talking about

The bigger point is that some third fucking world country is paying the first mover costs for a proper thorium reactor because America is too fucking invested in maintaining the status quo to move to a better, safer, design, even though they fucking designed it.

>How have they solved the pipe degradation problem?
The ship then sails to the Marianas Trench and drops its load. Or it can sail over to a spot where ocean currents flow to Hawaii. The americans can feel the warmth for 1000 years as the alpha particles glide across their tanned hawaian bodies in the surf. Their spam musubi will be more entertaining to eat if they glow during night time luaus.

Molten salt reactors SHOULD be cheaper than boiling water reactors.
They're simpler, with less issues they need to mitigate against. The biggest problem in the US is that you CAN'T get a license for a production molten salt reactor. They just don't provide them. So there is no "cost" for a molten salt reactor of any scale because you can't build one.

Molten salt reactors were considered for use in powering planes, though they used uranium rather than thorium, I don't know why you think they couldn't handle vibrations.

aviation-history.com/articles/nuke-american.htm
large.stanford.edu/courses/2012/ph241/omar2/

A US million is what 10 manpower years?
For a government split over 48 states and 3 layers of government?
Is 10 million really even money? So "Left hand doesn't know what Right hand is doing".

>But why Indonesia?
It's great for China if the reactor fails. The radiation will crush the fishing zones of its economic opponents malaysia, singapore, thailand, indonesia, and the philippines. China can then take over the weakened countries just like in the fan fictions they write on their websites.

>or the nuclear reactor in the UK that the Chinese are building
Like the chinese bridge in the USA that collapsed. The chinese train their people by having other countries pay for projects. Look at how China milks the USA research grant system. They have their pet professors at usa universities team up with chinese project people and the USA government then funds the research project. That's how they financed biological studies in china and offshore and in their rivers.

> that definitely cannot be converted to an aircraft carrier, we promise

Yes, because it definitely cannot be converted to an aircraft carrier. Not to mention that building the actual carrier is like 5% of the work involved in having a carrier. The other 95% is in building the necessary logistics, communication, training, commanding, navigation, integration, repair, etc. etc. etc. networks and facilities of infrastructure and **knowhow**. It takes literal generations (as in a military generation - someone going from private to general) to develop. Even China's only just starting it.

Heck, you could give Indonesia an actual carrier today and it'd make no difference. It'd just sit in port and rust. Like giving someone a space shuttle without an instruction manual or training. They're not gonna go to space, they'll just blow themselves up.

more like they were warned that their sea walls were too low and their generators were at risk but someone took some cash under the table not to ask any more questions

>It'd just sit in port and rust
like the russian carrier lmao

christ stop this nonsense

Nuclear isn't technology.

based
more suffering amelirads

Nice LCL sea.

>no one in the picture
guess china achieved instrumentality without us

Indonesian here. I never knew we have 12 billion dollars to spend on toys.

fuck off faggot, no one asked you. Are you really proud of being a citizen of the biggest time bomb ever?

>the biggest time bomb ever
Yellowstone? I'm not american.

>The bomb itself replies to my post

Toba lake
Krakatoa
and other zillion volcanoes

Thorium reactors are the reddit of nuclear power. Build fast breeder reactors or fuck off.

>tfw bomb
Same can be said to japan. And fuji is much closer to densely populated area than indonesian volcanoes.
You fags are surprisingly care about us. If shit hits the fan in next several thousand of years, we will just migrate to australia.

I doubt that thorbomb will ever be built though. Peace out retards.

Ok, Abdul. Don't forget to clean up your master's room and make a coffee for her tomorrow.

>giving shipborne nuclear reactor on a muslim nation
great now we have a floating nuclear suicide vbied
why is americans keep making the same mistakes over and over again?

Oh ffs bug people. This is exactly what is going to happen in ten-twenty years, right? The reactor company will of course deny the dropoff and some leaker will leak the docs after ten years when everybody on the raft has been killed. The future is bretty depressing.

The zeros don't lie but then again it's a simple concept that should be easy for everyone to understand.

thorium reactor finally being built? I'd firmly maintained in other threads on the subject matter that thorium was nuclear vaporware due to the commercial risk of developing new technology compounded with the global shift from nuclear power but I stand corrected apparently
inb4 indonesian chernobyl because indonesia cannot into first world

> hur dur amerikka dumb cuz they dont want to use something that has literally never worked (like me)!!!

>Trying to manufacture an American car
>Not actually possible, it's a European invention, and therefor always European
Being this retarded as the faggot OP

>converting a nuclear barge into an aircraft carrier
paranoid retard

Plus the cars the USA makes are actually so bad they should keep their fat american piggy face shut

You are such a retard who can't shut up when he doesn't know shit about a topic.

Are you serious? Wtf is wrong with you guys?

>third world country building technology they probably don't understand
what could possibly go wrong?

>like the russian carrier lmao
Or every airforce in europe

The future is space colonization and nuclear bombardment of Earth.

Russkies don't need that aircraft carrier for aircraft, they land power. That ship does carry a shit load of big missiles underneath the aircraft runway.

Yea America is dumb, and Americans are fucking stupid luddites. Just think of all the subhuman hillbillies who insist on living in the middle of bumfuck nowhere where we have to use our taxes to roll out infrastructure to them because they're not sustainable on their own unless they revert to 19th century lifestyles. They're not even good for agriculture, we have super farms run by big corporations for that shit. They're just resource sucking parasites and they're all over america.

Who is the current leader in nuclear reactor technology?

Actual rollout or hypothetical?

Actual rollout

>meanwhile in Finland

Attached: worlds_2nd_most_expensive_building.jpg (960x540, 95K)

Look at all those cucksheds

Isn't Indonesia ruled by chinks anyway much in the same way that America is run by Jews?

The Chinese can't even build smartphones that don't explode

Dumb fuck where do you think smartphones are built?

>reddit salt reactor
It will go nowhere. I hope they enjoy replacing the heat exchange pipes constantly, because nothing can effectively run for any long periods of time under the extreme heat.

assembled by chinks, designed by Americans.

chinese designed shit falls apart almost instantly. even chinks know this.

Literally the only smartphone designed by Americans is the iPhone, and it's a glued together piece of shit

They don't need to design shit when you retards export everything to them or other surrounding shitholes because you want to save some money on production, and Americans don't even design that much anymore either, most of your patents and scientific journals submitted now is useless trinket shit or social sciences mental illness.

Chinks are playing the long term game by understanding they're a country and investing into their national future. America as a country doesn't exist anymore, you're a glorified multinational corporation.

you're both retarded, America doesn't pursue thorium because it's safer, and because it can't be weaponized as easily (hint: what two countries have the largest nuclear arsenals? would either want to have any reason at at all to stop producing enough enriched waste to give those arsenals up?), and also because muh luddites don't want another dumbass to accidentally the entire gulf coast/atlantic coast/west coast/whatever river

>what two countries have the largest nuclear arsenals
Ok makes sense for US but France is a different story

Vast majority of smartphones are primarily designed by Chinese + the ARM Europoors.

Although when you look at all actual components, they come from quite a lot of places, some might even be from the USA.

And no, they don't explode.

>two largest arsenals
>US and France
huh?
icanw.org/the-facts/nuclear-arsenals/

>russia
ayy lmao all their shit is probably rusted junk, I'm talking about non meme superweapons and countries that can afford nukes.

*was rusted junk, they've been modernizing their arsenal well before the US began again

With what money? Their economy is smaller than Italy's kek. This is a country that can't even beat fucking ukraine...

with all the money they should probably have spent on making the crumbling commie blocks less deathtrap-y

Is this a LFTR?

Attached: 1311010641509.png (938x4167, 2.46M)

Dunno, flouride is one salt that could be used but not the only salt. This is a molten salt reactor though

>you're both retarded, America doesn't pursue thorium because it's safer, and because it can't be weaponized as easily
The US has been winding down nuclear for decades. They stopped planned constructions in like the 70s and they haven't been keeping existing ones fully up to date so they'll probably shut down in due time.
