Survivor bias. You need an ego to get past the difficult puzzles you have to solve when learning to program. Something like 90+% of people who try to learn programming basically fail.

That makes you merely an efficient code monkey. I spend most of my time thinking about code. The time I spend writing code is like 1/4.

My grandpa is a programmer that had six kids that all have their own families and have financial stability. My uncle is a programmer that had 3 kids, two have families so far, and he bought houses for all three of them.
I'd say both those people have a reason to think highly of themselves.
The people I know that have succeeded with programming have seen it as a way to break out of poverty: you need no tools, resources, or skills beyond being able to read and type, retain information and solve problems. If you come from a foreign country with no money and make it as a programmer in the US you have a damn good reason to think highly of yourself.

my family is from ex-yugoslavian countries, not rich at all. I don't have the world figured out, but my relatives and their friends that came here had basically nothing. You use what you have.

usually when an argument turns philosophical is when it devolves. the question was why programmers think highly of themselves. many people are proud to have their own house, healthy children, and money, many programmers achieve these things and therefore think highly of themselves, especially if they came from a worse-off family. Especially up until recently, being a programmer was a very good shot at being financially stable.

As a group yes, but the fresh out of college (or worse: bootcamp) have no right to be arrogant. They certainly were not the ones who "built the modern world". In fact it is a symptom of their arrogance that they would take credit for something they themselves would not achieve under the flimsy excuse of group membership.

This is true. The reason is that they think their computational knowledge eliminates the need for domain specific knowledge, particularly in fields like medicine. Truth is a lot of doctors and experts aren't friendly towards programmers because of some fear that AI will replace them. It's because the arrogrant douches refuse to listen and actively degrade others' work and knowledge since they care only that their precious #kode looks impressive to other equally arrogant programmers, never mind if it does not translate into reality.

The way to fix this is to somehow get people to see programming as a tool, a means to an end, not something to be pursued for its own sake. But a cull of the industry wouldn't hurt either: what I wouldn't give to see some of those brogrammer faggots being forced to literally take their own medicine.

I've worked with programmers who came from intensive bootcamps. They're not bad at all. If anything some of the biggest brainlets I know have bachelors/masters in CS. Outliers perhaps but still, you can't rule out bootcamps completely.

I hate them all, particularly the "lol so #nerdy" ones whose entire identity revolves around programming. They don't all act like typical soifaggots but the mentality is there whether or not their soilent mouth is open.

I work from home 3-4 days a week every week, I could have gone for working every single day at home but I don't like being completely disconnected from my team members. Soon enough I want to transition into contracting, so I can work half a year and travel the other half.

It gives me so much flexibility with my life that I'm not sure I could find anywhere else.

At the risk of sounding like a total fucking fag, I don't "dream" in code, but I sometimes code in my dreams, or I'll see code in my dreams. This usually happens when I've been programming for 9-10 hours a day for more than a week. I take it as a sign, that I am being extremely productive. This doesn't happen often, like once in 2 months.
