Does anybody use ebay sniping services? which one should I use for my first thinkpad?

ya the old thread that still has more than 100 replies available to it, you literally cannot justify making a new one and it's just shitting up Jow Forums

So how the fuck do I actually install HEADS on my T430? The docs are non existent.
What are the differences to the regular Linuxboot payload? Can I even use plain Linuxboot if I don't need the TPM features?

Any good deals on the P series workstations? Wanting to get one for ~$450 but under $700 USD

Attached: 491sgx4t4pc31.jpg (3024x4032, 1.29M)

the best deals are always in weird spots, like local sales, businesses that closed etc
my best tech haul ever was when a local consulting firm shut down over some bullshit and they just threw everything away. I got a heads up and ended up picking up tens of thousands of dollars worth of computer shit.

There are just too many options I can't figure this out /tpg/.
I have what amounts to an unlimited budget as I'm allowed to pick any laptop I want and work will purchase - I love the thinkpad aesthetic, but I'm confused, can anyone point me in the right direction?

X1 Extreme? unlimtied budget can u send a few bux over dis way for my dream tp so i dont have to beg mom

sent my x230 to repair because i got water on it and i couldnt turn it on
it got returned with a weird screen thing where it flickered and distorted the colors, and the keyboard seemed off, like they didnt reassemble it well
then the keyboard just kinda got off and when i put it back on the screen thing didnt happen, but now the keyboard wont work

could anyone tell me what to try to fix this shit? im not very good with computerd because im generally retarded btw

what's the most modern thinkpad I can get without a trackpad

X200 I'd assume, or maybe X201

but why no trackpad?

because fuck those useless things

Unfortunately I only get one and have to produce a receipt - I was looking at the X1 carbon (7th) gen but the 4k screen seems to take 4-5 weeks to ship - does anyone know if that 4k screen is worth it?

Reposting since I posted in the old thread accidentally:

I currently only have a desktop. Want to get a small, cheap laptop purely for coding projects. I can get an X220 for ~$90. The battery doesn't work though (only on charge.) Is this a good idea? Are replacement batteries cheap and easy to find?

Attached: Screenshot_20190731-060831_Gumtree ZA.jpg (1439x1308, 354K)

I'm about to buy an x60s for a project, is there any higher screen resolution that is easily available, it doesn't need to be compatible with the original motherboard I'm not using it, I'm going to stick an arm board inside, don't worry the original Mobo is dead.

Attached: 1564548387382.jpg (750x1000, 345K)

Bros I fucking love my X220, but the IPS screen I got has a yellow tint. What are my software options to correct this, even just a little?

Also what's the difference between the X220 and X220 tablet? Is the tablet recommended?

Prebuilt x210 do not have trackpads. They're built on the x201s.

Alternatively I can get this one for ~$120. Should I pull the trigger?

Forgot pic

How do you order an X210 as a westerner? I dont speak a word of Mandarin and those guys apparently not really English.

Attached: chinglish.png (1080x1920, 227K)

I still dont know if they customize existing ones or make their own boards since I gave up desu

Aye Sir!

why is the x1 extreme so fucking expensive. You can a similarly specced machine for half the price from other major oems. Don't the chinks wanna sell their stuff?

desu a 4k display on a laptop screen isn't even noticeable unless you want to be 2 inches away from the screen, outside of that it's just e-peen bragging rights. Someone who actually has it may have a better opinion though.

why is there two threads?

HELP!
My x230's right trackpoint button stopped working for some reason. WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?

get a new keyboard

I bought a thinkpad a few months ago. How do I know if it's chinkshit?

T series, X series, P series, it's not.
Anything else, it is.

Ask them one question at a time and keep it simple. Like you're talking to a 9 year old.

here is my purchase history:
i wanted a laptop to try out this "linux"-thing so i got T410 i5-520 4gb ram 320gb HDD
upgraded to SSD.
this was my daily driver laptop through most of highschool. heavy as a brick but reliable and great as a space heater. tried out ubuntu for a year and than switched to mint and stuck with it. (tested manjaro, debian, antergos, fedora, arch and a few others, but nothing came close to mint)

x220 i5 4gb ssd
this was to replace my aged t410 with something lightweight and portable.
it failed because i was experiencing some weird shutdowns under load, thtat i wasnt able to fix (swaped rams, thermal stuff, ramped up fans)

got an x230 for really cheap
i5 4gb ssd
upgraded to 8gb ram, bigger ssd, 9 cell battery and i am thinking about getting a ips-screen for it.
it has become my go to portable maschine for almost anything. it only has a few shortcommings: the new keyboardstyle isnt nearly as good i am missing a few hotkeys like the "disable touchpad one", the touchpad is abysmal which lead to me master the nipple.

yesterday i got myself a T420 in order to replace my T410 as my mobile workstation.
i5 cpu, 8gb ram, 900p display and ssd
i mainly picked it because of the old-style keyboard.

after this story time, here are some questions and problems i wasnt able to solve so far.

the surprise shutdowns of my x220, i want to fix this, because i want to sell it as a working maschine. but i have no idea on how to do that.

i have some thermal problem with my t420 ramping up the fans all the way in idle under linux mint for a few seconds.

is the ips display for the x230 really worth it ?

i wasnt able to get qubesOS to run on my T410, had some really weird display glitches during setup.

sent from my x230.

it'll go on sale for real august 4th when the fake sale ends

I need your help /tpg. Ordering off taobao can't decide between x230 or x240. I am a student and the i7 U might give me more battery life 15W TDP vs 35W TDP. Maybe I could leave the adaptor at home if i went for x240?

>X230 $259
i7 3520M 8GB RAM 256GB SSD IPS 1366x768

>x240 $359
I7 4600U 8GB RAM 240GB SSD IPS 1920x1080

Attached: IMG_4917[1].jpg (500x301, 83K)

Get a T450s/X250 if battery life is priority.

i just ordered a core 2 duo X9100 for my T400.

a 17 inch 4k hdr with ryzen + navi, t430 keyboard and 97 kwh battery for

+170$ to go from i7 x240 to i7 x250, seems steep.

i dont get why u need an i7 but im using the i3 and the battery is really nice with the 6 cell, (im missing the internal 3 cell)

Can t440 be modified to accept 2280 full length SSDs?
Sawing away and shit like that?

Got my keyboard from AliExpress. Did I just put a a nasty resprayed keyboard in my X200? Brand new keyboards are probably impossible to come by, right? (or at least way overpriced: looking at one at around $80 including shipping)
interesting article: thinkwiki.de/Tastaturrenovierung

yea

Most powerful libreboot thinkpad? Looking for best CPU power overall.

Attached: 1537237559753.jpg (255x98, 6K)

Is there even any reason to install libreboot?

Judging from specs, imo the latter looks a lot better. Plus you can easily get a USB SD Reader for less than $20.

hell no

user, if you still about, I am working on the port, wait until heads is ported to either coreboot 4.9 or 4.10, the T430 TPM is only in those releases.

Id recommend Coreboot with SeaBIOS payload in the meantime

T400 with Quad Core. T500 only if want bigger screen

Just get T430 and put a ivy bridge quad core in it, use me_cleaner and use coreboot on it.

Just use coreboot with microcode on any libreboot machine otherwise expect bugs and shit.

are there TWO different chassis for the T420?

unless i'm mistaken, i've just seen one version where the always-on USB and an IEEE 1394 port are on the right side of the computer (pic related) and another where they are on the back and the firewire port is an option.

did Lenovo do a facelift on this thing at some point without incrementing the model number?

Attached: t420-chassis-a.jpg (1600x1200, 259K)

I knew you were a channer
Why are they so slow with PRs? I have merged your flash cleanup branch with the initial T430 support one and compiled the ROM successfully. Thinkpad is disassembled and I would gladly assist you in testing.
Are you hanging out on IRC somewhere?

didnt realize there was a new thread so I'm reposting this

I figure this is the best place to ask, for $2000 dollars Canadian is the thinkpad x1 carbon gen 7 the best I can get? The spill proof and drop proof is also what I like about it as I broke 4 of my previous laptop through drops and spills

Attached: x1 carbon gen 7.png (191x429, 24K)

if you are prone to breaking laptops maybe something thicker may be in order like the P52. Or if you really need a smaller screen maybe a T480 from my experience of owning one they are pretty rugged. like I dropped mine on to a concrete floor from 3 feet and it survived without a scratch. Still if you are that clumsy I would definitely suggest a cheaper used Thinkpad like a T440p or a X220. They are built like Tanks and so cheap even if you manage to break it, you wont be that upset.

No to my knowledge. Get an EGPU if you need a 12" laptop but you want a GPU

Yes (Mostly)
Standard Wifi Cards (Intel) Won't work
DGPUs won't work

Love my x260 desu. It was pretty straight forward to set up and the only thing that didn't work was the wifi and shutting down would be a pain sometimes.

To reset bios***

Hey guys, I think my mic on my X220 is broken. I checked the BIOS it's enabled, is there any trouble shooting I can in OS (Void Linux DE:XFCE) to make sure I don't have to get a new one.

If you can get into bios fine then it’s OS or disk related

And why would i need 2 thinkpad

Can anyone recommend a few dell models to buy to run linux on it?
I like thinkpads have a T420 but I use Dell everywhere and the Thinkpad keyboard layout is different , not comfy for me:-/
used dells interests me the most. Thanks

Just bought a T460s i7 20gb for $60. Guy was asking $100 but the keyboard doesn't fire a handful of keys. Otherwise it seems clean. Did I do good /tpg/?

I have been thinking about getting a thinkpad, specifically a t440p, but it seems like on ebay a lot of the really affordable ones have computrace enabled.
From what I read this basically means I can't boot windows on it to any extent.
Is there a way to bypass this without being thoroughly versed in coding? Or would I be better off paying more for a non computrace activated model, or just getting a different laptop?

No just use coreboot.

I've always had a weird time getting the mic to work in Linux on my t420. I forget what exactly I did to get it working but it was something in the audio settings so keep playing with them.

My T400 is running the latest bios, 3.24. But when I swap the P8400 for a X9100, it doesn't post.
I've seen many people online using this processor on the T400. What gives?

my laptop often gets hot. are these temps damaging my x220?

Attached: filenshieeett.png (495x216, 18K)

Kraut here too.
If you want to have a new QWERTZ keyboard in a reasonable quality, prepare to pay premium for it.
Its not like in America where parts such as this can be obtained by the barrel full sadly

t460s is shit but for 60$ i wouldn't complain

How’d I do Jow Forums?

Attached: 143B7476-CC21-4240-BED6-338EC7CFA5F9.jpg (1242x1377, 946K)

Yeah for the price I'm happy.

Been a while since I had anything new, should I perma-disable AMT in the BIOS? That's part of the whole oh-exploitable backdoor shit right?

Pretty good, although it's probably not 1080p. Get a quad core to put in there (4702MQ, 4x00MQ) and replace the screen if you care.

Wish I could get myself this kinda deal, T440p in europoor starts at like 180 USD and if I get a US deal the price climbs up back to this price thanks to the shipping.

>disable AMT
>run Lenovo updater
>updates Intel ME
>frozen on boot splash screen for an hour
....oops?

Just received my £88 X230. Excellent condition for a used laptop. Only one noticeable scratch at the bottom. Bought the 4 GB configuration, but received 8 GB instead. Thanks /tpg/.

why are used Thinkpads so extremely cheap? Like really good ones like the T440 too.

My T500's broke AGAIN.

Do I fix my T500's hinge for the 4th time and the fan for $60?
Or do I buy a T420 for $70-$100 and a screen for $50?
OR do I buy a X1 touchbar with a broken motherboard and try to fix it for $105?

do i do it lads?
i don't see any downsides especially if i'm just using it for university

Attached: file.png (1016x440, 360K)

they are bought and sold en masse as a result of job lots from schools and businesses. as a result, they're quite easy to obtain.
