I am moving to UK (Sheffield) for a master's degree and I am coming from Greece a country which i think is very internet friendly law (well mostly because they're almost non existent). So could you anons inform me about what not to do there while surfing?

Mostly I am worrying about data caps and content that I should not access (torrents etc etc).

Invest into a VPN

Didn't UK ban internet porn withodut a speciql license/permit?
Eitherway get a good vpn.

no, some tried but they realised that shit is unenforceable.

I don't care so much about torrenting, I am more worried about data caps though. Is this a thing in the UK?

Femanon here I don't watch porn often

this. been there for 9 months, was doing illegal internet stuff and no officer knocked on my door

lies, my sister is watching porn/masturbating on a daily basis

My sis studied at Glasgow 2010-2011. She got an ISP notice when she downloaded a movie from piratebay

then either it was a shitty VPN or she forgot to turn it on

She didn't use one. VPNs were not so big back then. Are some sites blocked by ISPs? Can someone explain the story about firefox portraited as the internet villain a few weeks back?

i thought so
>Are some sites blocked by ISPs?

Have you seen her doing it? Can you put a secret camera and record her?

i haven't seen her because she's locking her door. however i sometimes hear her doing it when i go to get a snack/drink in the middle of the night. also i can spy on her computer since we're in the same network and see what sites she visits

It's actually not that bad. People really overstate how draconian British law is, which isn't helped by all the sensationalised stuff in the media. In fact Britain is about as good as anywhere for freedom on the internet, just remember that as a visitor you should remember to pick your porn license up at the airport on arrival, then you're golden.

3rd year student here. I assume you'll be living at halls for your first year, so It depends on the ISP who serves your halls. I'm currently studying in Leicester and my ISP is Glide Student - they don't have any data caps or web filtering in place, and I've been able to do sketchy stuff (torrent, access tor etc.) without getting harassed by them.

As for you, you need to check who the ISP of your halls are. If it's a private provider (like Glide) then you'll be fine in most cases to do whatever you want. However, if it's the university itself that is providing the internet access, then they will most likely cap your internet access and filter websites - if that's the case, just get a VPN or learn to roll your own to get around the filtering.

Wow archive.org is banned in the UK? That's sick!

Popular torrent sites are widely blocked, easily bypassed with a VPN (which you should always use anyway when torrenting).
Porn is not blocked by normal residential ISPs. Plans to do so have been scrapped for now. Mobile and uni hall ISPs might have more severe blocks.
It is now very unusual for fixed line ISPs to have any kind of data cap. It's still common for mobile.
It is not blocked. It was briefly and accidentally blocked a while ago.

Most of those sites that are 'blocked' can be easily accessed by changing your DNS or by using a VPN.
