my last pair of NVX XPT100 broke in a really stupid way and i had them for only a year. I use my headphones daily (gaming and such) so I guess it was bound too happen but i didn't expect it to happen so soon. I bought a pair of ATH-AD900X after asking a few people i know but honestly they just feel fucking weird on me head. I'm honestly looking for something comfortable that just wont bust after a year due to shitty plastic

What headphones are good quality, but just a durable as MDR-V6? Most other headphones I end up breaking within 3 months, and my MDRs are the first that have lasted years. Are sennheisers good enough?

I have some audio technica M50xs. Will I really be getting that much of an improvement in quality if I move up to another pair of say, $300 headphones?

How do the AD900X feel weird?
Maybe you just need better pads, there are a number of them on ebay, i just got the ones suggested by Zeos (yeah yeah, i know, i just wanted comfortable pads with similar sound). If it's the "headband" some Anons use an elastic wrapper on it, google about it.
With that said, some of the most comfortable headphones i've tested and owned are Beyerdynamic ones, check the Custom One Pro if you really want closed-back, if open os ok check the DT880 250ohms.
Another open alternative is the AKG K612.

Well outside of that there's not really many recommendation I could give for headphones that fit a portable outside use, maybe the HaaFee HD1 / MOOH-BE00BT but that's a bit pricier, maybe out of your price range, definitely better sounding and more isolating though.

Can someone explain why I would use the gain switch on a O2 combo unit instead of leaving it at 1x and adjusting the volume knob? Wouldn't going to 3x gain distort the audio?

to put the knob in a range where it's most comfortable to use and works best
analog attenuators tend to "jump" and have the most channel balance problems on the leftmost end so you can use a lower gain to bring your sensitive headphone in the comfy middle range and a higher gain to bring your weak ass phone down from maxing out the knob
