Organization

How do you guys organize your stuff?
All the organization """systems""" I find online are made by and for boomers.
I'm sure some of you autists have pretty darn good ways to organize your stuff.

it's a non-trivial problem, in general. it's why things like library science (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_science) exist

come up with your own system that works for you. try thematic grouping at the top level and other kinds of grouping at lower levels (subfield, date, document type, etc.). or just give up and find/xargs grep your way to freedom

I entirely depends on your problem space.

I've organized everything with backup in mind, so at the highest level I have my
Repo: all coding work, version managed by git.
Media: games, music, movies, things that I didn't make and isn't personal to me. I store the file tree so that I can remember what I had and re-download it if I really need to
Archive: like Media, but more rare stuff worth keeping a backup of. I keep a local copy and a cloud copy on Glacier which I only sync ocasionally
Documents: everything that is personal, self-made (other than code), etc. I keep this stuff redundantly synced across many things.

I could tell you exactly how I organize Documents but it's so specific to who I am, what I have going on, etc, that it wouldn't really be relevant to you.

I organise everything that I store in such a way that I only need to go 2 folders down to get to actual files. If I store Videos -> Films -> Comedy
folders, this too many folders, so I would create a top level "Films" folder.
I store my music in folders, even if they are singles, because I browse music in the file explorer part of ncmpcpp.
This ends up with me having a lot of top level folder in ~ but I prefer that than having to go down 11 levels of lasagna.

One of the more crucial and widely applicable approaches is to first separate personal files from any other files you may have gotten elsewhere. This user has that part right How then you organize the two groups is up to you.

i have my games folder, and i have my porn folder, but where do i put my porn games?

In a sub folder in the porn or games folder. Your choice. Simply label it "Porn" or "Games"

the great conundrum of our time, along with trying to figure out whether to file Under Pressure under Queen or under David Bowie

>How do you guys organize your stuff?
I don't.

Technicaly porn is video and games is software. Porn games technically-foremost are games so they should go to games.
However if both features are important then a compound folder "porn-games" needs to be created. Otherwise tag based file system needs to be put in place which is not feasible in Windows.

You'll get there one day.

Have only one large directory but use a database to keep track of what is in it so you can have multiple tags.
Would something like this even work?

not good enough, games go into the game folder and porn goes into the porn folder. i need the "porn games" folder to exist in both places
mount --bind might do it, but all my shit is on windows rn
fortunately, i plan on moving everything to a storage vps soon, i could even figure out a tag system like

There is actually a way to have a folder exist in two places yet be one folder alone. Syncing of course works, but I know there's a way to do it properly. Just can't remember. I did it once before for something on Windows 10.

Windows has symlinks.

My Download Folder:
Anime,Study,Movies,Games,Music,Software,TV, Others

- Folders, i put numbers or * + - in front of the names.

- Courses: by language, Video only course, Text only course

-Books by type Ex: Network, Programming, Security.

I just dump everything into one folder and name everything according to a hash of the binary data

based and redpilled

>i put numbers or * + - in front of the names
why?

tree data structure is not suited for general cross-relating of things. You want a full graph.

Why would you find xargs grep. Can't you just grep

get on my level normies

~/stuff/stuffs name/stuff

Attached: Screenshot_20190802-202110__01.jpg (933x205, 48K)

i keep a somewhat organized music and movies collection, i use artist/album/files

for videos ill do
movies/files
anime/files
tv/files
cartoons/files

Not him, but I did this too.

In Windows, for example, these folders will appear first/at the top. So you can't lose them.

I have folders like "+Games" and "Games", were in "+Games" it's the shit that I download and haven't tested yet; it have corrupted files, or I have to re-download/replace something. And in "Games" it's the shit that's OK.

> Sorry for bad engrish

porn all of it softcore.

naming style is letters and numbers
by clothing/style/producer/newsgroup and then name - ie.
PH=pantyhose
47k=ATK
n47ur4l5/1n35_cudn4 = Ines Cudna sourced *mostly* from a.b.nospam.breast.natural

about 7tb.

Attached: 50124011.jpg (1328x2000, 333K)

you might want to restrict to a subset of files (e.g. files with a given extension, or files not in a given directory (such as .git or node_modules)); it's a very natural thing to want to do

have loving relations

is CCleaner the best way to organize and delete stuff?

I just hoard everything all over the place and then grab a few drinks and try to organize them all.

Married for 20 yrs, couple of kids.

what will your children think when they find out you're a degenerate?

This is a blue board.

In my view, it's not a hard problem to solve. I know where I want my stuff to live. It just takes a lot of work to go through it all and clean it up. I've been dumping stuff wherever for about 4 years now. I've started organizing it, off and on for two weeks now, and I'm about halfway done. 5TB of random internet files + personal files.

I don't understand your naming schemes

Filenames:
Main creator / Title.
Directories: category / subcategory.
What is difficult about this?

Why is half that wiki page dedicated to how woke librarians are?

Every system I've tried falls apart in time. Books are easy but documents, videos, and especially images aren't helped by folder hierarchies long term.
The most effective thing in my experience is good filenames and searching. I think a tagging system like boorus would be ideal but I haven't found a good way of doing it that stands up to actual practical use.

What do you mean good filenames?

Thanks for the link.

Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just descriptive and chosen with searching in mind.

So then instead of Stoya's Playground 7

It would be better for it to be Stoya Misionary Creampie 60min

you know the drill, user-kun

Attached: kondo-book_0.jpg (545x400, 173K)

I wish Windows had a tagging option in File Explorer.

Roughly sort things into folders, but for those times you have an image that is anime and a reaction image, you don't have to decide which folder it sits in.

Just search anime and it pops up, search reaction and it pops up, or search "anime, reaction" and there it is again.

Time to switch to Mac OS?

If the file has an actual title I'd just use that. I'm talking about stuff like random images, text documents, or videos I recorded with my phone.

>Time to switch to Mac OS?
If you're going to use local filesystems only and stick with apfs then tagging system macos provides is good enough. Tagging works on network shares but they're not searchable which renders them useless in this case.

This seems relevant, any good programs to search for duplicates or same name files?

>Tree hierarchies were a mistake

just get xyplorer

shell

I put it in my porn folder because that's the folder I go to when I wanna cum
when it comes to organization I usually have guidelines but not rules, whatever works for you is usually what's best

teach me your ways

Put shit into folders that match their importance in backups, don't sweat the subfolder organization.

Full text search with or without index for documents.
Hydrus for various meme+waifu image media.

Auslogics Duplicate File Finder

>teach me your ways
Not same user but jdupes for exact duplicates.

if it's code then I abuse linking to keep the folder tree of my projects simple. It is also a huge advantage for third party stuff that has it's own update mechanism outside of git. That's pretty common with c/c++ though.
I don't really care about organizing random shit like movies.

& those are sfw tits.

>he thinks muh kids let alone muh missus will give a shit if I have a wank...

m8, you're naivety is showing

>xyplorer
>$40

qdir, literally ALL THE FUCKING functionality you could possibly need in a file manager in a relatively small FREE application - you're welcome.

Attached: Q-Dir2.png (883x722, 44K)

I move everything to a folder called "orginze later" and then I worry about it later

Organize it in a way that makes sense to you man, categorize shit then divide it more from there as you see fit. Like sorting music in a top folder called "Music", with a folder for each artist in it, then in each artist folder, folders for each album. Then the songs in the folder for their album

Attached: itl.png (364x479, 13K)

finding an optimal balance between depth and width of the directories tree. Finding categories that best optimize this.

I organized based on what the application recommends.

For example for movies and shows I follow Kodi

Having everything sorted on the filesystem level allow my "library" to be portable.

>Photos/Pictures (i forget the name
couple sub folders for wp, weebstuff, ect
>Documents
random stuff I don't really use this too much
>School
school work classes are sub folders
>Downloads
a temporary folder for downloads (I wipe if every so often)
>Desktop
empty except for the occasional thing I put there for temporary easy access when I'm working on something
>Projects
personal project subfolders

that's about it. I don't have much of anything that this doesn't catch.

In home:
>.config
>org (system-wide org files, such as TODO and agenda)
>_courses (both software and non-software related
>_dev
>_dev/lab (low commitment projects)
>_dev/projectname (personal projects that I actually care about get their own folder)
>_dev/github
>_writing (mostly org files related to my blog, short SF/fantasy stories I like to write, and more "academic" stuff)
>bin/scripts (small CLI apps I coded, either in shell/powershell, rust or python)
>Documents (basically every third party document goes here)
>Documents/cv (I like to have my cv up to date, it's the only thing in this folder that is personal)
>Documents/books

Very, very, very poorly.

dupeguru

Simple:
Install on SSD software and games I'm currently using or that are disk speed demanding.
Dump everything else unorganized to the HDD.
Done.

my:

Movies/SD/genre/title
Movies/HD/genre/title
Movies/UHD/genre/title
TV/SD/genre/title
TV/HD/genre/title
Games/PC/gengre
E-Books/gengre/authors
Music/gengre/arists
Apps/linux/gengre
XXX/gengre/artists

but idk how organize picture files, some protips?

I have poor organizations and then use Everything search to find what I'm missing.

I wish I could use it when importing files though.

>E-Books/gengre/topic/authors
fixed

Is there a way to "expand" all the folders insisde a folders ?

For example, if I'm looking for Django.mp4, but I forgot if it is in Movies/Action or Movies/Western.

Is there a way to see all the files in Movies/ without hierarchies ?

Attached: 1546618299915.png (1125x661, 115K)

find .

It is really nice, just not completely happy with the dark theming capabilities.

Technology has come a long way. Thank you user.

You don't need fancy mount options, you only need a hard link. I think you can even do it on Windows.

Use tags: [porn], [games], [rpg], [faggotry]

But first you need a good portable, maintained system to manage that.

Wrote my own program with own config file
I still need to correct some memory problems :(

this is absolutely disgusting and degenerate go wank on your kids while they're sleeping fucking pedo

link github

the pepes go on the pepe folder
the wojaks go on the wojak folder
the anime girls go on the anime girls folder
organize your memes people

based

All in temp folder.

tells me I'm degen
>this is absolutely disgusting and degenerate
>go wank on your kids while they're sleeping fucking pedo
tells me to do something degen...

Top job cunt.

are you retarded or are you just pretending?

Oh fuck it,I know it sucks
(Even the readme it's fucked up because of random edits from telephone)
github.com/focsiseta/Organ

^This is an old version, sooner or later I will update the rep with the new version (a little bit more faster and the code is cleaner)

yeah but what if the meme has pepe and wojack in it??

Attached: 1532639636339.png (1548x1468, 186K)

Organizing images is the hardest. I never know where to put my jew redpills - in the jews folder, redpill folder or ww2 folder

Then make a hardlink.

i just consider who i care about more in the meme. For example I put pic related in apu folder because imo this meme is about apu

Attached: 1541857458772.png (4000x2000, 2.17M)

I think it'd be easier to understand if you included an example config file in the repo that I can read/copy and explain what that config file means rather than throwing everything in the README because it's unreadable. Also, where do the files go? Is each rule one folder?
