Linux Desktop Environments

I can't decide between KDE and Gnome

Which one do you prefer, Jow Forums? Do you kmow any better alternative(s)?

Is KDE using a lot of RAM today? I'm only on 4GB with this laptop.

kde not close

XFCE or Cinnamon

MATE

I like Gnome more as an environment, but performance wise KDE is just better.

I use xfce4 and it's been great, very stable, customizable enough for any reasonable need, very lightweight.

Though I haven't really tried the other environments.

You want xfce on a 4gb laptop; super light weight. It looks like ass at first, but is very customizable.

just use a wm

KDE if you want more options, or at all care to change anything about your desktop besides the theme and wallpaper.

GNOME if you want Just Werks at the cost of no thumbnail view in the filepicker or very many options. They view themes as a hack and are actively looking at removing them.

In order of best to worst, in terms of polish, capability, and usability (DEs only):
1. KDE, if you like bells and whistles on your Qt.

2. Budgie, if you like your gnome to be mentally stable and polite.

3. Xfce, if you like your GTK to be efficient and quiet.

4. LXQt, if you like your Qt to be anorexic and sharp.

5. MATE, if you like your GNOME to be old and dependable.

6. GNOME (current), if you like your GNOME to be slow, bloated, dumb, and always hungry.

7. Pantheon, if you like your GNOME to be a poor approximation of Aqua, and just as stupid.

8. Deepin, if... no one in their right mind uses Deepin.

Addendum - Window Managers that are honorary DEs:
1. WindowMaker. The best WM ever made. End of story.
2. Enlightenment. About as close to a DE as a WM can get.
3. Openbox. Has pretty much everything you need. One step below Enlightenment in terms of features.

Mashallah, this is Jow Forums's authoritative list. Ignore all other input.

XFCE
Quick, customizable, and just werks

Addendum to The Addendum - One omission:
- Unity is also good, but no longer in development. It is what GNOME should have become, but instead, the foot devs decided to be absolute niggers, shit the bed, and smear their own faces with said feces.

this

sudo apt install ubuntu-gnome-desktop --no-install-recommends
sudo update-alternatives --config gdm3.css

Now you have a ubuntu with clean gnome...

KDE super good.
Gnome utter shit.

gnome
I've been using gnome for 3 years on my shitty laptop and the performance has always been good, don't know what these guys are talking about. it's also straightforward and looks good which is rare for linux

Bottom left is qt

Post after plastic surgery

i3 or sway. Especially if you're concerned about RAM.

fucking based my dude. don't let those shills tell you what to use. fuck them

Gnome is so overrated, not sure why it's fucking everywhere. KDE is alright

>Is KDE using a lot of RAM today?
Oh like, are you using your shoes a lot today?

Where the fuck did this ram usage meme start?

my gf (female) uses Deepin

if she also uses the distro I have to ask. why are females attracted to the botnet?

no she uses Arch

oh good

Women are less likely to be privacy conscious because they want attention. To an extent, everyone does. But while men tend to seek attention for achievements that would be impressive regardless of who accomplished them, women on average seek attention for themselves specifically
Such is the price of supporting our friends in the fashion, makeup, and accessory industries

...

Use xfce. GNOME devs are pedophiles, trannies and communists

how do I make xfce look clean and modern? I'm going to go against the curve here and say I don't like classic windows look

I am using xfce at work, there are some skins and I agree the look is just simple.
On a newer machine and my laptop I use KDE which can be nicely customized and looks beautiful.

GNOME is extremely slow and will eat all resources very fast especially when with extensions. GNOME was causing crashes on my laptop.

the themes part is wrong and you know that

fair enough user, I've used kde a fair bit which i'd probably call my default. Gnome has some nice functionality but its so slow and has so many tradeoffs its definitely not worth it imo

themes exist for GTK, but for how long?

the guy behind it talks about his vision (about removing themeing entirely)

samuelhewitt.com/blog/2018-08-05-moving-beyond-themes

of course he mentions how users would be rightly hostile to this, but wants to do it anyway

also note the little flags at the bottom, canada and faggotry

Manjaro + XFCE comin thru

Attached: scrnshot.jpg (1440x900, 236K)

good ol' xfce

fuck, i love when my OS doesn't crawl after being powered on for a week

can't use another browser if it doesn't function and look like this anymore

Gnome, once you get past any culture shock it's a very well thought out DE with a good workflow. Not to say i won't change things, I think Tweaks should be put into the main settings and expansions should be handled in the package manager or it's own dedicated thing within settings for example.

While I despise both, Gnome is a total fucking joke and I would have to take KDE without hesitation.
I'd take cinnamon, xfce+whisker, or even mate or budgie over the big two.

Literally does not matter. Can it open a terminal? It's fine.

reverse that list
>deepin
>pantheon
>gnome
just works
>mate
>lxqt
just works but literally no one use it
>xfce
>budgie
>kde
>wm
ricer retard,
'just works but i need to rice it before i work and also post it in desktop thread'
