My first time attending - day 1 and I already fucking hate this place.
Any oldfags can you please confirm it wasn't always like this...I intended to go to a hacker conference, to surround myself with individuals far smarter/experienced than I am, so that I could
learn about new attack vectors/benefit from sharing experience with those who have more of it than I do. I am by no means a fucking l33t hazxor or whatever, in fact I would humbly refer to myself
as a 'noob', as I am fairly new to the field and do not have much 'real-world' experience at all; that said I have a solid knowledge of Kali/Linux in general, as well as the industry standard suite
of pentesting tools. I am very well versed in networking and routing protocols, and have overall the experience of an entry level pentester/midtier IT/network engineer, as well as some hardware/
embedded programming experience (strictly hobbyist-like) and that said programming in general at an intermediate level, and in all the 'basic' languages that everyone knows (C(++), Python, Java, webshit languages). My
intent here is not to brag, my intent is to point out that I am a fucking noob - I intend to learn something at Defcon, so I showed up having a passion for cybersecurity as well as a comprehensive
knowledge base so that I at least know what people are talking about.

But jesus fucking christ, I could see from the start that my hopes were far off from reality - while I know the types of people
I intend on meeting and enjoying talking too are certainly there, I found myself surrounded by fucking roasties, retards, boomers, and other miscilaneous degenerates. Most if not all the women there
had that fucking look on their faces - I could tell right away they gave zero fucking shits about the infosec community, let alone hacking of any kind - they just showed up to run their fucking mouthes like
women so love to do. I refuse to beleive that any one of the hundreds of roasties I saw had any fucking idea what the speakers were saying, or any interest for that matter. They are here for one
of two reasons; their (((boyfriends))) brought them for god knows fucking why, (not too likely for some of them though, christ) or more likely the fucking "w0men 1n t3ch" meme - apparently any roastie
can show up to defcon and suddenly she is a h4cker like everyone else there. The 101 presentation (despite being a fucking awful experience in general) was sure to emphasise that "everyone was new
once", and that the important part is that we all socialize and teach each other new things, however that only works with a common mindset, where the energy one expends on explaining something to
some noob is put to good use by said noob and goes back into the community - I refuse to beleive that more than half the people there give a shit about the community of "hacking" in general, whatever
they believe that beat-to-death word to mean anyways.

The people I give credit to the most are the speakers, for being informative and knowledgeable on the topics they discuss, those guys are awesome.
Another thing I noticed during the 101 presentation was the absolute lack of substance from the panel members - there were 3 women up there who I could tell from their voices, and from the things
they were saying with those voices, that they had near zero technical knowledge (but somehow a fuckton of useless shit to say...). There was the skinny faggot who had to remind every 2 minutes he
WAS in fact gay, the women who discussed their dildos and drinking adventures more than is necessasary, and the Canadian kid they kept bullying. I sat in that presentation for 2 hours, not ONE useful
thing was said, and nothing technical whatsoever. Yes, it's a 101, it's more about the community, but I am still left with no clue as to how and why those people are on the panel and what their qualifications
are, something surely worth at least mentioning. They were not shy to mention stories of sex and drinking, howerver. I will end my blog post by saying that no I don't fucking think women and fags and
the like should be banned from Defcon, but they certainly should not be encouraged to attend. I blame the fucking organizers and the media for this - I admit I missed the hype about the "women in infosec" and
"everyone is a hacker" bullshit they push nowadays, but I have been rudely awakened.

more dedicated and knowledgable individuals than it does now - and it pisses me off that the last place I would have thought was safe no longer fucking is - (((they))) are fucking everywhere now. As of today I am
convinced there is no place free of their influence, they have successfully made their way into every niche of society, every profession, everything. God help us now.
I will be spending the next 3 days avoiding these fucks (which will be a challenge) and talking to vendors/doing CTF's, attempting to find the areas of concentration for those who have at least some fucking shred of intellect.

Skip talks, go to villages. That's where you will actually meet people and learn. I watch main talks online after and focus on interesting things that catch my eye. Don't let the flash and sizzle of shit throw you off with people only here for bling and drinking (but drinking is good).

DefCon is always essentially good and positive. All the exploits uncover vulnerabilities either by legal demo, or theoretical on slide presentation. It's an excellent learning experience. Anybody coming off with this "all blackhat" hasn't been there. greyhat yeah, I would say maybe yeah, butr I would say it's prolly greyhat/whitehat/cyber security employees.

Here's the breakdown of attendees:
30% normies
30% freakshow retards
30% IT pros
5% employees and goons
5% skilled hackers and security experts

The goons are a mix of cool people and highly unstable people without social skills who, when given an ounce of control cannot handle it and embarrass themselves, bark orders and prove their inteptitude with every other sentence.

The crowds are ridiculous, so some advance planning helps a ton.

KEY: take the initiative to go talk to 5-10 people who look like they've been around. At least a few will give you soem great insight and help you get the most out of the conference.

It's actually more organized than it used to be. 2 years ago I just left after day 1 it was such a cluster.

Hit the villages, vendor area and chill out room
Know that some things are in different casinos - sit down and do a little planning
Carry cash because some of the crap for sale is cash only
time your meals at off peak times to avoid lines
Give up on "swag" the lines are just ridiculous, unless you're ok with 2 hours wait for a tshirt
Much of the crap for sale can be found online easily

Overlook the hassles, focus on the good stuff and you will get a lot out of it.
Look at the mentally defectives as entertainment, or as people with struggles you should be glad you don't have. Many are nicer and have more to offer than you think.
