Most modern engines are great. Mess around with some that look appealing to you and choose the one you feel most driven to work in.

Amethyst actually seems promising. I like that one of its primary design goals is to make multithreading easier and that Vulkan is its primary target, which should mean simpler cross-platform development

The renderer is being completely rewritten for the 4.0 milestone to address the performance issues, and while they're at it they're adding vulkan support.

Game engines were the spiritual death of vidya because this is what allowed vidya industry to become "Hollywoodized" and you know what that means, cheesy, shallow, soulless jewish shit full of ideological indoctrination.

If you plan to ever finish your game, stop caring what is Jow Forums approved.

If you don't know what to pick, use Unity.
If you want something more challenging and professional, use Unreal.
If you want to practice programming, use SDL or Love2D.
If you don't want to program much, pick GameMaker or RPGMaker.

Don't get fooled into custom engine. Decide if you want to develop a game or an engine, because you will not finish both without much experience. It's fun but it's much much work than you imagine. Especially if you don't know what you are doing.
