What's the point of tablets?
Are they just normalfag laptop alternatives?
I don't think I could ever justify getting one, especially since all of them, with the exception of the screen, are inferior to my pocophone F1 when it comes to specs.

I mostly read on it. Both mango, novels and papers (the app I use has sepia mode so its easy on the eyes). Sometimes I watch netflix on it instead of TV, if I am alone.
All in all, I didn't even buy it (my boomer mom gave it to me after buying a new one) and it's a good device for what I use it.

Porn

This, is another way for the mindless drones to consume media.

they are good for doing light tasks on the go such as email, facetime, medpipia consumption, browsing.

Ipad apps are getting better for actually getting shit done. The affinity pro photo editor is full function and pretty badass. The apple pencil is sort of a meme, but it makes working on the ipad much easier and faster. Using the pen to navigate. It also allows you to draw and paint at a very high level. Ipad os will hopefully make this thing more usable to getting actual work down. Cursor support is coming.

The hardware and battery life are very impressive for ipads. They also have fantastic screens. The only limiting factor was the software.

>said the Jow Forums poster after a productive afternoon of shitposting

I use them to watch anime and lectures and take notes in class. They're super comfy you can lie in bed and watch stuff on them. Laptops suck. I haven't used my laptop for more than half an hour a week for the past month.

I have one. I only use it to listen to my podcasts when I go to bed at night.

>take notes in class
you hear a lot of people say that, are you typing on it somehow or are you literally writing on it like you would with paper?
I can't imagine either one being more comfortable than just writing on paper, and if it's something that needs just pure writing, I can't imagine it being more comfy than something with a keyboard.

>bring tablet to class
>"AAAAAAHHHH... time to get my typing device out!"
>people already giving uncomfortable looks between themselves, the weirdo is at it again
>get my Das-Keyboard 4 with blue cherry mx
>it takes up the place besides you, not that anyone would sit next to you anyways
>TAKTAKTAKTAKTAKTAK
>TAKTAKTAK

I barely take notes, and it's smaller than my boomer of a laptop. Might as well tap on it.

I forgot my typing device at home in another country. Oh well. I could have carried out this pasta.

with the pencil you can use it as you would like normal writting. I couldn't really get used to it DESU, but i haven't used it a ton.

My preferred method of note taking was writing on paper, then scanning the documents into IOS. MUCH better IMO.

However, the pencil is great for making annotations or filling out worksheets/texts. The liquid text app is amazing-for loading full textbooks, searching between muliple books, and linking them all together.

If I was a college student, I would be using an Ipad heavily for the classroom, and study. The ipad is the best device for doing heavy research-Again because of liquid text functionality. IOS also is full of apps that are great for organizing, and provide a seamless experience to MACOS. The combination of IOS devices and Macos for keeping an organized workflow is completely unparreled.

I am not a huge Apple fag, but I run a small business, and being on IOS and Mac for simple organizing is great for us. Sending shit directly to someones device via a desktop is awesome.

Honesly, Used apple devices are at a very compelling pricepoint. mid 2012 macpros can have SSD/RAM upgrade, and run current macos. I bought a 2012 i7 mac pro for like $350. It runs on an ultrawide display, doing heavy browser based workflow, with zero issue.

Tell me which apps are great for this. And should I buy a pencil? Aren't those expensive?

>medpipia
Phoneposters need to get shot

Liquid text, copied, notability, apple notes.

I am on the fence if the pencil is worth it. If you have school work, yes. Or you like to draw. Maybe get the cheap logitech one. If you can get it for $70 its worth it for sure

Fantastic media machine for when you're sitting in the couch or laying in bed. Awesome for porn.

They are media consumption and shitposting devices
Wouldn't get anything besides a windows tablet tho, the android ones dont get support after 1-2 years

i use one instead of my phone. its the best choice imo.

I love using my tablet because it's exactly just my phone but bigger.

>with the exception of the screen
That's the exact reason of using a tablet, dummy. Oh and also superior portability over a laptop.

my 7 inch phone is labeled as a tablet tho

It's like a laptop, just portable.

I've got a Google Pixel C
>Take notes in class
>Shitpost here in spare time
>Watch vids
>Read
>Mess about with some code
Pretty much all I need

They are phones for people with fat fingers.

tablets are for kids to watch finger family videos on
they're toys.

This

My i7 Surface Pro 6 is great in tablet mode for media consumption and in docked mode for programming. I've replaced my previous setup (iPad + MacBook) with a single device.

Non-Jow Forumsentoomen are going to use tablets because muh apps and muh notetaking on a larger device with a larger screen.

I used a tablet once, camping, to watch movies with. Otherwise I have never been in a situation where I absolutely needed a tablet.

A phone is a small tablet. You can do just about anything on a phone that you could with a tablet, they're more portable, etc.

A laptop is superior in all regards for note-taking and productivity, and in many cases and workflows eliminates the need for a desktop.

The only exception I could see is if you're some artsy-type and use a premium laptop with a removable keyboard and stylus. Even then, this is a niche use and I imagine better work can be accomplished with a PC and Wacom/etc pad. Maybe I'm out of touch, and maybe I'm not seeing something, but especially in the sub-$1000 range, I see nothing but toys and a waste of cash.

premium tablet* with removable keyboard/stylus.

Well, if someone only "needed" a laptop for watching films while lying down, document processing, emails or other messaging services, dicking around on the internet and other stuff like that you might as well get a tablet, heck, there's even stuff like microsoft office and various adobe programs on android now.
You can even slap some decent emulators on the stronger android devices if you want games and are not really in a position where a desktop PC is impractical for you (and I don't think anyone is truly in that position).
I'd go as far as say the only reasons to choose a laptop over a tablet is if you do programming (and I can only imagine there are SOME programming capabilities even on android), absolutely need a screen bigger than 10-ish inches (and MUST have that size on a portable machine), you use various capabilities which can only be done on computers due to software limitations (which comes back to programming) or you're just plainly a hobbyist for whom a tablet is awfully limited, even now.

I have a laptop, but it's kind of heavy and honestly, I don't really do more than what I've mentioned above on it, I think I might replace it for a tablet when the time comes.

> email and messaging on a tablet
Painful. You should use a laptop for these purposes, and frankly a phone is just as suited for messaging and email, unless you're attaching an external keyboard, in which case... Laptop.
> Slap an emulator if you want games
Hence "toy"
> I have a heavy laptop
That is one limitation depending on what you currently have, however you can get a C720 or small sub-12-inch laptop that can be very easily held or placed on a lap, for

Emails and anything text related is entirely doable if you get one of those tablet keyboards, yes, it's an entirely legit option now.
Also, I think with phones the biggest reason typing sucks is the size of the keyboard, I think it's even more of a problem than there not being physical keys.
video games are toys, sure, but some people play with those toys, also a legit consideration.
And pretty much all tablets are lighter than pretty much all laptops, they're also easier to carry in most bags.

I stand by what I said that tablets are just as capable, if not better, for "casual" use, especially if you get one of those keyboards.

A tablet with pen and windows is perfect for light duty tasks.

I'm thinking about getting a tablet as an alternative to smartphones if I can get apps on it to check when the bus is arriving or call a ride service.

I love my dumbphone, I don't want my phone to be able to do so many things when it's at expense of power and durability, the more I take my phone out to play with it, the more I risk not having it when I actually need it to do its most important job - call and answer, especially in an emergency.

Being a Leaf, I also love how my dumbphone is exempted from emergency broadcast, if a nuclear strike is about to hit my city, I don't want to know, and sorry, I don't want to be woke up at 3am by an amber alert, it's too much like the Seashell Radio in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit novel, I rather have greater control.

So I want to keep my dumbphone with my IRL contacts, and a tablet I keep around to browse photos, read, and have aps, but nothing personal on it so I can pass it around to show photos.

>I'm thinking about getting a tablet as an alternative to smartphones if I can get apps on it to check when the bus is arriving or call a ride service.
can be done from web, dont need apps
>I love my dumbphone, I don't want my phone to be able to do so many things when it's at expense of power and durability, the more I take my phone out to play with it, the more I risk not having it when I actually need it to do its most important job - call and answer, especially in an emergency.
doesnt seem like a cause for concern. the rest of the word runs fine
>Being a Leaf, I also love how my dumbphone is exempted from emergency broadcast, if a nuclear strike is about to hit my city, I don't want to know, and sorry, I don't want to be woke up at 3am by an amber alert, it's too much like the Seashell Radio in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit novel, I rather have greater control.
b l o c k. also theyre nothing alike. airpods are more akin to seashell radios, amber alerts literally mean a kid could be saved.
>So I want to keep my dumbphone with my IRL contacts, and a tablet I keep around to browse photos, read, and have aps, but nothing personal on it so I can pass it around to show photos.

I use mine just for ebooks

You can use a tablet as a laptop if you don't wanna carry much weight.

I want a tablet for reading manga and watching movies, seems comfy than using my smartphone. But from what I saw, the sub $100 tablets are garbage and the only option are either Samsung tablets or Ipad.
Any good cheap tablets? Don't really care about update.

second hand ab s2. its 4:3 which is good for manga

it's cheaper to get a tablet than a portable monitor, and a tablet can be used as a portable monitor

70 BUCKS? CRAP

It's like a phone but you get a bigger screen.
It's like a laptop but you get ones that aren't pure ass at lower price points.

Mine is amazing for manga due to the nice, 3:2 screen. In addition to that it's useful for portability. I do need something portable, but only rarely, so a tablet with a keyboard is a much better idea than an actual laptop which would see literally 0 use at home (I'd rather use my desktop). With a tablet I can do some reading/browsing, so it gets fairly regular use at home too while still having the power to act as a laptop in the rare occasions when I need one.

Literally phones with big screen, good for media and entertaining toodlers.

There are whole classes of activities that can be done better with tablets. Up to now people have been making a virtue of performing these tasks on unsuitable hardware - IE laptops etc.
You can knock screws in with a hammer; people do it. But it's much better to use rhe tool intended for the job, a screwdriver.
Also, new classes of activities are being found that are impossible except with a tablet. If not for tablets this wouldn't have happened.
