I know 2 successful musicians that make about 10k a show each (do about a 100 a year).

They both use all kinds of daws, mostly ableton and Cubase though but lately they've been raving about bitwig. This is house/techno artists though.

It doesn't really matter what you're doing as long as it works for you.

recently started using reaper and I'm blown away by how good it is considering that it's literally free for as long as you to want to use it and if you decide to pay it's $60 for a license. I used to use Ableton but IMO Reaper's way of handling things is very powerful and straight-forward. Plus the conceptual simplicity of "everything is a track!" is really appealing to me, would definitely recommend to any Jow Forumsentoomen looking to goof off with music.

Mixing/Mastering: adobe audition, any other daw where the plugin chain works the best for you really
Each daw can do everything the others can do, but depending on your needs and preferred workflow each has its uses. Your technique knowledge is constant through any software, it's just a matter of working in the software's constraints.

every successful musician I know uses one DAW exclusively. they work in the studio that the record label provides them and the studio offers every DAW on mac and windows platforms to keep productivity up. after you get up to the big boy DAWs like Cubase, logic, studio one, audition, and pro tools DAWs don't matter and it's more about the skills of the engineer
