How can one of the biggest companies on the planet make such consistently awful design decisions?

Muh nigga

Why does the UI bar thing cover up the bottom of the video? How hard is it to put it below the video? It's not that big of a deal but it just drives me nuts that this hasn't been fixed in 15 years.

>blaming youtube for your shit taste in videos

>Why does the UI bar thing cover up the bottom of the video?
Like literally every video-related site in existence? Two competing goals: maximize screen area, also have controls present. The solution that youtube, and ALMOST EVERY OTHER WEBSITE, uses wins by default because it's the only one that works at 100% fullscreen.
So far your design critique is pretty lacking.

Why the fuck is it impossible to read comments while watching the video?

Uhh because you can't actually physically read something and watch a video at the same time, unless the text is literally right on top of the image (subtitles), and even that is questionable and annoying for a lot of people. Your eyes do not work that way.
Man I'm all for shitting on youtube but so far you have no fucking clue what you are talking about.
What else ya got user?

>Doseofbuckley
>AtheismIsUnstoppable

Seen enough here to conclude that you're probably completely insufferable IRL

Because they want any screenspace visible while watching the video (where you'll spend most of your time) to be displaying more videos, so you'll keep wathcing
>hasn't been fixed in 15 years
It wasn't that way for most of that time
"Maximizing screen area" doesn't make any sense you autistic faggot. I assume you meant "Maximizing video area", in which case you're failing at that as you're cutting off some of the video's area in favor of the controls.
>hurr durr most sites do it
Yes, major companies endlessly follow non-functional designs that look good. This is nothing new.

Just hide the bar until they hover near it. It's not hard.

>projecting this hard
rofl you are the one making the clueless autisic complaints.
>Yes, major companies
Ah so your complaint isn't with YouTube specifically, but ALL WEBSITES THAT EXIST?

Wrong, the controls should be on the video. If you're trying to watch the video uninterrupted, then you're not trying to control it. Putting it on the video means the rest of the UI outside of the video is irrelevant and you can make whatever changes you want, it won't interrupt control of the video itself, and users will know this.

Anyways, since you're too retarded to make valid complaints, I'll tell you some of the actual ones:
>retarded recommendation algorithms
>biased and unfair promotion of some content and suppression of others
>moronic draconian automated DMCA enforcement
>incredibly inconsistent censorship and inforcement of other EULA and TOS issues, often clearly politically-motivated from an extreme left-wing viewpoint, or anything that might risk a tiny bit of bad publicity via mainstream media

>LGBSCP
Oh god not that!

Welcome to clueless retards complain about youtubes layout episode 853

'Why do the suggestions suck?'

They are so big they don't need to care

2 column table
When the video is paused it gets in the way. I can't see what's below the controls!

I have another one. When you 'select' the control buttons your keys perform different functions.
>select the volume control
Left and right arrows no longer seek the video, they adjust volume. Very annoying when you adjust the volume with the mouse and inadvertently select the volume control. "Why can i no longer seek??"
>select seek bar
The up and down arrow keys no longer adjust volume, they seek the video.
>select play/pause button
Can no longer play/pause with space, because it appears to trigger play/pause twice.
>select gear iron
The spacebar no longer play/pauses, it opens the gear menu. If you press the space again, it will toggle an option.

Worst of all, the selected controls, initially, display no indication they have been selected!
Try this:
>click gear menu, opening it
>click gear menu, closing it
>watch video, thinking all is well - no indication of any controls selected

>press space to pause video
>video pauses, gear menu opens, gear menu selection is now indicated by a blue border
>press space to play video
>video does not play, instead autoplay is toggled
>press escape
>gear menu closes, still bordered in blue
>press space
>video plays, and gear menu opens
>press escape, repeat
...
>cycle through selected controls with Tab or shift+Tab until you find something more sane, or click somewhere where there are no controls to remove any control selection (potentially pausing/unpausing the video if you click in a confused panic)

My Nigger

You know everything you said has nothing to do with design right? Also from the standpoint of earning money, I don't think most of the decisions they made have been bad. They are earning more and more money and people are watching more and more youtube. Just because you cry how sometimes video gets recommended that you dislike does not make the algorithm bad.

Why is it sooo easy to spot a braindead Jow Forumstard?

kekking into another dimension
you know 99.99% of people don't have these autistic keybinding problems. They're just on their laptop or phone or tablet or pc or whatever clicking on some videos, which they then watch.

also basically everything you just said sounds like accessability features for the disabled
you can't navigate a UI specifically designed for the disabled

>You know everything you said has nothing to do with design right?
Uhh no. All of those things are intricately tied to the design decisions of the site.

Yeah that drives me nuts.

Why did you buy premium?

Nice arguments, faggot.
Other companies doing or not doing things is irrelevant. It's retarded regardless.

Is there a way to keep listening to YouTube while you disabled the screen of your phone? I just want to be able to listen while my phone is in my pocket.

Because I use Google Play Music and it's ultra cheap if you use an Indian VPN when signing up (like $2-3/month)

Imagine something like niconicodouga where comments literally scroll through the screen
Many comments on yt aren't worth reading anyways.

Yes, I do so all the time.

What the hell are you talking about? The controls used to be below the video until some years ago when they changed it.

i think it's a premium feature

those companies dont follow their own design decisions, they are based on popular decisions so they always get it right.... now.... this is not always accurate

Skytube on F-droid

That's why I went over to using K for play/pause.

Mr epic designer, please enlighten us on why it's awful.

thats perfect but NewPipe is good also

I see nothing wrong with that design. It's pretty minimalist and concise.
That content though... the horror...

>>It's old so it must be good.
YouTube helped set the precedent for what most sites use. That doesn't mean hiding the progress bar is good design, it means that most sites don't want to deviate from what users expect a video player to do. The only purpose of hiding the bar means using that 25 pixels or whatever to cram in more ad space, but given how much of a clusterfuck Youtube is, there's not really a point.

FFS, I've seen porn sites using players with less obtrusive progress bars than YouTube's.

>you can't navigate a UI specifically designed for the disabled
Just because it's for the disabled, that doesn't mean it should be a clusterfuck. In fact, probably less so.

YouTube is not minimalist. It's congested.

>newpipe
>good
it's a buggy piece of shit

I also liked adoseofbuckley in 2012 ^^

NewPipe is annoying

Newpipe is garbage, set my phones brightness so low any time I would open a video the screen would go almost black for some reason

Nonwhites.

Damn good suggestion. Thanks.
